In addition to that exciting development news, our teams have been busy delivering some incredible events. On the 26th of October the Club celebrated its 109th annual City Tattersalls Cup Race. On Race Day we hosted over 700 guests in the Queen Elizabeth II Grandstand Ballroom and for the first time we also hosted 150 Young Professionals in the Kingston Town room. As you will see further in this magazine the day was a raging success. On the 16th of November, Corporate Concierge and the City Tatts Young Professionals Network hosted a marquee at the Polo in the City at Centennial Park. We had the pleasure of having Georgia Higgins, the Sydney Captain, and Nano Garcia, the Captain of the Hawaiian team, in the Club before the event to view the inaugural City Tattersalls Polo Cup. The Cup was won by the Sydney Team. In this issue you will also find an article on the Club’s involvement in the Sydney Open, held on the 3rd of Chairman's November, which saw 80 buildings across the city available for viewing, these included spaces that are not normally open to the public. The heritage highlights of the City Tattersalls building were the Safe Room, Lower Bar, Dining Bulletin Room and the Skylight Lantern located in our administration space. On the day we had 1,016 people come to the Club which represented 20% of all tickets sold. Of those, 115 people joined our Club as Members and took with them many insights as to the role our Club plays in the fabric of PAT R IC K CAM PION our city. We hope to have this resolved in the first quarter of 2020. 4. Recreation of the Club and Hotel brief. The briefs created back in 2015 were great documents, but with changes imposed on the project by Council and the Land and Environment Court arising from Heritage and Traffic considerations, making sure the new briefs maintain the original Club concepts but accommodate the necessary changes and also embrace new and emerging trends in the industry. This is an imperative exercise that will ensure the quality and ultimate look and feel of your new Club and Hotel is achieved. 5. Design competition brief. In his update, our Chairman noted some of the many events and community support work your Club does on behalf of its members. I would like to take a moment to thank all of our dedicated staff that not only make it possible to participate in community events, but also allow our Members to enjoy the Club amenities every day. It is evident that without committed and hardworking staff, we simply would not have one. Our staff and Members are opposite sides of the same coin, the whole of which make City Tatts possible. Before concluding, I would like to remind Members that 2020 is a very important year for the Club, for two great reasons. One is that in April 2020 our City Tatts Bowlers will Australian Turf Bowlers Trophy be hosting the 55th Annual Bowlers tournament, which this Donated to CTC by Ralph Johns year is being played out of Double Bay Bowling Club and will see bowlers from all over NSW, Queensland and Victoria land in Sydney to represent their respective Clubs. We have won this tournament 20 times over the past 55 years and we look forward to winning this again. The other very important event in 2020 of course is our 125th Year Anniversary, a year that will see the creation of a new Anniversary Logo and some very exciting pieces of merchandise being made available to Members as mementos of this significant milestone. Dear Members, on behalf of our Board of Directors, staff and the 25 bookmakers who established our Club back in 1895, may I take this opportunity to thank you for your support, your wonderful patronage of our Club and wish you and those close and dear to you a wonderful Christmas period and all the very best for 2020. What does 1DA approval mean? In essence the Council has provided approval for a building envelope or boundaries which the new development can be built within. The next submission will be a 2 DA approval, which will outline the look of the building and detail design plans specific to the exact building product mix. In preparation of the 2 DA submission, there will be an architectural competition which will commence in 2020 after which an architect will be chosen to design the multi-user development. OUR LIVING HISTORY Bookies war: Big Tatts versus little City Tatts Welcome to City Tattersalls Club, gracious home to Sydney’s second bookies’ club since 1924. City Tatts, then dismissively known as Little Tatts, or even the pretender, was almost 30 when it moved here, audaciously right next door to rival Tattersalls Club, then home to bookmaking aristocracy. Foundations City Tattersalls began with 25 St Leger bookmakers at a rowdy meeting in June 1895 at Her Majesty’s Hotel, where Centrepoint Tower now stands. Their first official meeting weeks later in rented rooms at the National Building at 248A-250 Pitt Street was a “smoke ceremony”, where 105 chaps smoked and discussed politics while listening to live music. With 367 members by 1897, the club looked for bigger rooms and in 1903 purchased 249 Pitt Street, next door to George Adams’ grand hotel, now the Sydney Hilton, and opposite elegant Tattersalls Club, built in 1891. 202 – 204 Pitt Street 198-200 Pitt Street The narrow building offered a billiards room and large lounge, or settling room, where bookies met to settle bets on Monday mornings. More importantly, it backed onto a lane shared with offices for the Evening News newspaper. City Tatts made a deal with the newspaper to call Melbourne Cup results to a lookout at the rear of the club, who then dashed through to the Pitt Street end where chairman James Clarke announced the winner to crowds visitors to see not just the can also see some of the blocking the busy street.
