                                              COMPETITION!
                                          Become a Hedgehog hero!
Sleepy, cute, truly iconic. Hedgehogs are one of the UK’s best-loved
mammals and spend much of their lives asleep. These prickly critters
rely on hedgerows and woodland edges for food and shelter.
Unfortunately their numbers are falling and they are disappearing
rapidly in the countryside, as hedgerows and field margins are lost
to intensive farming. Hedgehogs usually hibernate from October or November through to March or April, so now
is the time to prepare them a cosy, safe home to spend the winter.

We are having a competition for you to design a cosy hedgehog house – made out of recycled materials, such as
old glue sticks or garden hanging basket. The more imaginative, the better! The winner gets to make their
hedgehog home and bring it into school where we will try to attract hedgehogs and am hoping to see them on a
motion activated infrared night vision wildlife camera. We are hoping to attract hedgehogs into the gardening
area where there are brambles and bushes!
More details about hedgehogs can be found at the following websites:
https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/trees-woods-and-wildlife/animals/mammals/hedgehog/
https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/what-do-if-you-find-wild-animal/help-hedgehog

Put your ideas with your design, name and class in the box by the Eco Board in Chiltley Wing by Friday 23rd October. We
will then pick the winner and you can build your own hedgehog home! We look forward to encouraging wildlife into the
school grounds and increasing the school’s biodiversity!

                                                            ‘Generation Sea: Plastic Protest!
Our fight against single-use plastic continues.
We are happy to say that the kitchens now provide lunches in
individual boxes which are plant-based compostable meaning they
are biodegradable. These lunchboxes are made from renewable,
Community Grant: Litter low carbon, recycled or reclaimed materials. We also are using NO
Picking and Crisp Recycling disposable single-use plastic cutlery.

           success!
The Eco Team was delighted to receive a 2020
community grant and have spent the money
on litter picking equipment (litter pickers,
gloves, high viz vests, clipboards, recyclable
bin bags, etc) and crisp recycling bins. Already
they are very popular and the Eco Warriors
have been out every day litter picking in their
designated areas. The school grounds are
looking clean and tidy and encouraging the
children to keep the village clean too. The
results of what they have collected and the
main culprits of the ‘snack trash’ will be Walk to School
displayed on the Eco Board shortly! Crisp 5th– 9thOctober is Walk to School Week. We are

 wing.

the short distance. Maybe scooter or bike instead.
This will reduce the number of cars on the road and
around the school gates, lower air pollution and will
encourage children to become fitter and healthier.
Year 6 took part in Bikeability over the past 2 weeks.
As part of our Transport topic for Eco Schools, we are
encouraging children to think of ways in which we
could improve the school facilities, such as a better
waterproof shelter for bikes and scooters.

        Supporting the Wildlife Ranger
             Challenge in Africa!

On Saturday 3rd October over 200 Rangers across Africa ran in solidarity to raise funds for conservation.
Ranger teams across Africa united in the Wildlife Ranger Challenge, a race to bring together over 10,000
men and women across Africa’s conservation areas back to the field, ensuring the wildlife is protected and
communities are supported.
Rangers across Africa are enduring drastic cuts in salaries and resources due to the devastating economic
impact of Covid-19, leaving their families destitute and wildlife unprotected. Ranger teams around the
continent are therefore uniting for the Wildlife Ranger Challenge to raise money to help thousands of their
colleagues, enabling them to support themselves and their communities, and to protect iconic African
wildlife such as elephants, pangolins, rhinos, and lions.
We were very proud to get our children involved and they ran in solidarity with the rangers, raising
awareness of their plight. Eco team will be delving further into the conservation of these beautiful animals
and the issues facing the people who live in the local communities surrounding the protected areas.

                                           Eco School Virtual Harvest Festival
A massive THANK YOU to the 40 entries from Liphook Junior School
to the Eco School Virtual Harvest Festival! The poems about nature
and harvest were AMAZING! It is GREAT to take part in a national
event and remember how important nature is and how it does
have a massive effect on the crops which are grown.

                                                 We need a mascot!
The eco team is hoping to adopt an animal through WWF as a mascot for Eco
Team to share with the school. We are hoping to raise £36 for the year to
adopt an iconic species and learn all about the issues facing their survival. Due
to Covid_19 we are unable to hold any money raising events such as cake
sales, so are looking out for any sponsorship! If you would to help us then
please contact the office! Any donations will be gratefully received!
Adopting an animal will give a huge boost to the amazing work undertaken by
WWF. It helps fund projects to work with local communities to monitor
animal movements, reduce poaching and help people to realise benefits from
living in close proximity to wild animals. Adoption also supports other vital
WWF work around the world. It will also help the children of Liphook Junior
School learn about beautiful animals and how we can help in their survival.
