2Clwydian Range and Dee Valley
Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
Areas of Flintshire form part of the Clwydian Range which is an
unmistakable chain of summits, many clad in purple heather
moorland, topped by Britain’s most dramatically situated
hillforts. The Range encompasses: limestone country with its
crags, pavements and specially conserved grasslands; rivers
and streams gurgling through magical wooded valleys; the
varying texture of the forested hillsides; and the fertile farmland 1
of the lower slopes. This is one of Britain’s finest landscapes
designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

3Walking Flintshire has a total of 1,082km of public
rights of way made up of; Footpath – 955.2km,
Bridleway – 114.6km and Byway Open to All
Traffic – 11.9km. Walking has many health
benefits and can be a highly social activity.
Many public rights of way have been joined
together to form continuous routes, making
it easy to enjoy the countryside or to see
the features of interest in an area. You can
download ‘Rural Walks in Flintshire’ from www.

joining a walking group in your area you can

Running
Wepre Parkrun takes place every Saturday morning. A friendly,
free 5km timed run, just you against the clock, you can go as
fast or as slow as you like. All you have to do is:
• Register at parkrun.org.uk
• Print off your barcode
• Turn up and run
You can run, jog or walk; you can bring a dog (on a short lead)
or your children (under 11’s must be within arm’s reach of a
parent). At the finish we scan your barcode and it is done. You
can go home or get refreshments in the café. You will get your
time and position by text or email within an hour or so. Wepre
Parkrun is entirely organised by volunteers; we are always
looking for marshals, timekeepers etc.
Follow the link on our webpage or email weprehelpers@

4Cycling
Use our purpose-built and often traffic-free routes to
cycle to work or get a bit of fresh air at the weekend.
Our neighbouring county Denbighshire also provides
a range of cycling opportunities from family rides, to
longer challenging rides in the hills. The North Wales
Cycling Centre of Excellence Project is working to
improve cycling opportunities in the area.
For further information on routes and events visit
www.ridenorthwales.co.uk. For free leaflets on the
National Cycle Network contact www.sustrans.org.uk
or use www.flintshire.gov.uk and search for ‘cycling’.
Coming for 2019 there will be a new Active Travel
Route through Greenfield Valley.
Fishing
Connah’s Quay Angling Club is a small not for profit organisation that runs the
fishing club at the Rosie Pool within Wepre Park . The club has been based at
the Rosie since 1967 and is run entirely by volunteers. The club runs children’s
fishing events throughout the summer months. These are mainly in the summer
holidays and more details can be found by contacting Wepre Visitors Centre. All
equipment is provided to give kids the essential skills to get them started on what
for many becomes a lifelong passion.

Then and Now
This exciting project, funded by the Heritage Lottery and Armed Forces Covenant
funds, will run throughout the spring and summer, uncovering the stories of Talacre
through time. Talacre is renowned for its lighthouse and its beach but there is so
much more.
During World War 2 many Merseyside families lived in makeshift huts in the dunes,
escaping the bombing in Liverpool. RAF pilots trained in the skies above and the
beach itself was guarded against the threat of German invasion. Post war it became
a much loved holiday destination for people from the industrial cities of north west
England and it is still a thriving seaside resort today.
For a week in April we will be running a Story Shop celebrating the village and its
people. We’re asking for anyone who has memories, photographs or memorabilia
of Talacre to come along and share those with us. There will be cups of tea, archive
photos, films and stories to enjoy. This is a chance for Talacre’s story to be told, by
the people who lived there and those who loved to visit.
On the 27th - 28th July we will be holding an action packed weekend celebrating
Talacre in World War 2, and launching our World War 2 trail.
If you’d like to share any stories in advance, or would like to volunteer to help with
the events please get in touch with us on 01745 881200.
Story Shop in Talacre Community Centre from Saturday 20th April - Sunday 28th
April, from 10am - 4pm each day.

Flintshire Green Flag Parks -
Wepre Park and Greenfield Valley
Colour
Greenfield Valley and Wepre Park are both rich in history and wildlife.
They are highly valued spaces within our local community and are both
Green Flag Parks.
Wepre Park is 160 acres of green space, nestled in the heart of
Connah’s Quay, Flintshire, it is a unique setting with its various habitats
and geology. Features of the park include; Old Hall Gardens, Fishing
Pond, Brook and Waterfall and Ewloe Castle for the public to discover.
Greenfield Valley Heritage Park is situated in Holywell, Flintshire and
encompasses 70 acres of industrial history. Historically Greenfield
Valley employed hundreds of people in both its copper factories and
cotton mills and is now fabulous open green space. The Valley is
home to a number of scheduled ancient monuments and is a haven
for wildlife. Both Wepre Park and Greenfield Valley are quality parks
that Flintshire is proud of, accessible for the community to explore and
enjoy.
Groundwork - Our Back Yard
Our Back Yard is an exciting Big Lottery funded programme aiming to
connect local people in Connah’s Quay, Flintshire to the green spaces
on their doorstep.
The programme includes activities for all ages and abilities with
opportunities for getting active and improving local green spaces,
making them better for wildlife and benefiting the community. We have
a range of events and activities planned, so always check the website /
facebook for the latest information.

The Year of Discovery.
Flintshire’s Coast stretches for 25 miles/40km from Chester to Gronant. The Dee
Estuary is a very special place where industry old and new sits alongside historic
gems such as Flint Castle, surrounded by internationally important wildlife. Enjoy
fresh, bracing air and views that change every day with the tides and seasons.
The Story of Flintshire’s Coast
The rich, sheltered waters of the Dee Estuary would have attracted fishermen
thousands of years ago but the first true industry was probably the Romans smelting
lead ore at Oakenholt in around 40AD.
As industry developed along the coast, the estuary became a busy shipping route,
exporting coal, lead and other goods. The first lighthouse was built at Talacre in
1777. Greenfield Dock brought pilgrims to St Winefride’s Well but also served the
industry in Greenfield Valley. Many fine ships were built at Connah’s Quay and by
1900 Flint Port was handling 8429 tons of cargo.
Today many of the old industries have gone and nature continues to soften the scars
on the landscape. Modern, cleaner industries flourish alongside the estuary where
over 130,000 waders and wildfowl spend the winter and everyone can enjoy the new,
improved access to this unique coastline.
