Vietnam’s ruling Communist Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong was re-elected on Sunday, a victory that
makes him the most powerful leader in decades. But his win was overshadowed by a serious
coronavirus outbreak in the country. Another stint in the top job for Trong is seen as a boost for his
high-profile anti-corruption campaign that has swept through the party, police and armed forces.

UK opens visa scheme to allow Hong Kong residents to become citizens

A visa scheme to allow Hong Kong residents to come to the UK opened, with some 3 lakh people
expected to apply. The visa, which is open to holders of a British National (Overseas) passport and
their immediate dependents, will offer a fast track to UK citizenship. But the Chinese foreign ministry
said it would no longer recognise the BNO passport as a travel document. The UK launched the new
visa after China imposed a new security law.

Russia arrests 4,400 Navalny supporters

Police detained more than 4,000 people across Russia and blocked off the centre of Moscow on
Sunday in a massive clampdown on protests demanding the release of jailed Russian government
critic Alexei Navalny. Mr. Navalny was detained at a Moscow airport in mid-January after flying back
to Russia from Germany where he was recovering from an August poisoning he blames on the
Russian government.

Animals guitarist Hilton Valentine dies at the age of 77

The Animals guitarist Hilton Valentine, who created one of the most famous riffs in pop music in the
1960s, died at the age of 77. The British band's version of blues standard The House of The Rising
Sun topped the UK and US charts in 1964. Valentine co-founded the Animals in Newcastle in 1963
alongside singer Eric Burdon, bassist Chas Chandler, organist Alan Price and drummer John Steel.
The group also scored six other UK top 10 hits including Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood and We
Gotta Get Out of This Place.

U.P. leads in COVID-19 vaccination

Uttar Pradesh accounted for the most number of persons vaccinated, followed by Rajasthan and
Karnataka, the Union Health Ministry said. U.P. has so far inoculated 4.6 lakh healthcare workers, or
about 12% of its intended beneficiaries, whereas Rajasthan has covered 3.2 lakh (8.8%) and
Karnataka 3.1 lakh (8.4%). Eight States accounted for 63% of the vaccinations.
India has averaged between 2-3 lakh vaccinations a day. However, the second half of the week saw a
spike in the number of vaccinations, with over 5 lakh vaccinations reported on January 27 and 28.

Govt May Postpone Census, Population Register to 2022 Due to Covid-19

The Union government is likely to postpone the 2021 census till next year due to the ongoing covid-
19 situation in the country. The central government had issued a notification last year stating that
the first phase of the House Listing & Housing Census and the National Population Register (NPR)
updation exercise will be completed under April 1 to September 30, 2020. This was to be followed by
a second phase which comprises of Population Enumeration from February 9 to February 28, 2021.
However, the first phase itself was postponed due to the pandemic.

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) has manufactured the last two of the 272 Su-30MKIs aircraft
contracted from Russia and is all set to deliver them to the Indian Air Force (IAF). India had
contracted the Su-30s from Russia in batches, and of them, 222 were assembled by HAL at its Nashik
plant under transfer of technology (ToT) since 2004. Of the 272 fighters, 40 are being modified to
carry the air-launched version of the supersonic cruise missile BrahMos.

India delivers 2 cranes for Chabahar

In its latest push to develop Iran’s Chabahar port project, India handed over two 140-tonne cranes
for loading and unloading equipment to the Iranian government on Sunday. The cranes, part of a full
consignment of six Mobile Harbour Cranes (MHC) worth about $25 million were sourced from Italy
and formally released at a ceremony at Chabahar’s Shahid Beheshti port after official talks between
India and Iran.

                              High Of ₹ 1.2 Lakh Crore Ahead Of Budget

Goods and services tax or GST revenue collected in January stood at ₹ 1.19 lakh crore, the finance
ministry said, in a record figure a day before the government unveils the country's annual budget.
The GST revenues during January 2021 are the highest since introduction of GST and has almost
touched the ₹ 1.2 lakh crore mark, exceeding the last month's record collection of ₹ 1.15 lakh crore.
The revenues for January 2021 are 8 per cent higher than that in the same month last year, which
was more than ₹ 1.1 lakh crore.

The gross GST revenue collected in the month of January 2021 till 6 PM on 31.01.2021 is ₹ 1,19,847
crore of which CGST is ₹ 21,923 crore, SGST is ₹ 29,014 crore, IGST is ₹ 60,288 crore
(including ₹ 27,424 crore collected on import of goods) and cess is ₹ 8,622 crore (including ₹ 883
crore collected on import of goods).

India's crude steel output falls 10.6 per cent to 99.6 MT in 2019

India's crude steel production fell by 10.6 per cent to 99.6 million tonnes (MT) in 2020, according to
the World Steel Association (worldsteel) report. India had produced 111.4 MT of crude steel in 2019.
In 2020, the global crude steel production also decreased to 1,864.0 MT for the year 2020,
registering a fall of 0.9 per cent compared to 1,880.1 MT metal produced in 2019.
At 99.6 MT in 2020, India, however, remained the second largest producer in the world after global
leader China. China produced 1,053.0 MT of crude steel in 2020, registering a growth of 5.2 per cent
over 1,001.3 MT in 2019.

Enhanced disclosures on customer complaints and operationalisation of a cost-recovery framework
have been prescribed by the RBI to strengthen and improve the efficacy of the grievance redress
mechanism of banks. Further, the central bank will undertake intensive review of the grievance
redress mechanism of banks having persisting issues. Based on the review, a remedial action plan
will be formulated and formally communicated to the banks for implementation within a specific
time frame.

Syed Mushtaq Trophy Final: Tamil Nadu lifts second title with seven-wicket win over Baroda

Tamil Nadu defeated Baroda by seven wickets to clinch its second Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 at
the Motera stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. Tamil Nadu unbeaten throughout the league chased
down Baroda’s modest score of 120 with two overs to spare. The victory was set up by left-arm
spinner M. Siddharth, who wrecked Baroda’s top-order with a four-wicket haul (4/20).

Lionel Messi's Contract Reportedly Worth $673 Million, Most Expensive for Athlete in Any Sport

Lionel Messi’s most recent contract with Barcelona is worth up to €555 million over four seasons,
the El Mundo newspaper reported. The Spanish daily said it had access to the document Messi
signed with the Catalan club in 2017, which included fixed incomes and variables that could reach
nearly €138 million each season. The newspaper said it is the most expensive contract ever signed
by an athlete.
The report said that Messi has already secured more than €510 million of the total contract. The
newspaper also details how Messi rewarded the club over the years, having helped it win more than
30 titles.
