BIOGRAPHY

Dr Tristan Casey is a skilled mixed methods researcher, with extensive expertise in both
quantitative statistical analysis (e.g., confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation
modelling, regression techniques) and a range of qualitative methods (e.g., convergent
interviewing, focussed ethnography, grounded theory, thematic analysis). Dr Casey has led
numerous health and safety-oriented projects while employed as a consultant, government
Principal Advisor for Workplace Health & Safety Queensland, and academic at Griffith
University. In late 2019, Dr Casey founded a boutique consultancy called The Culture Effect
with a co-investigator, Dr Xiaowen Hu (from Queensland University of Technology). Within 12
months of operating, The Culture Effect, a cross-institutional research translation and bespoke
consultancy entity, generated over $1,000,000 of industry and grant funding.

Dr Casey is a skilled research translator, having presented at national conferences on the
topic of tripartite collaboration and co-design to create meaningful organisational and
workforce change (e.g., Casey & Jorritsma, 2019). He has worked extensively with
government and delivered several projects that have had state- and Australia-wide impact,
including the LEAD safety leadership initiative. This initiative won several national awards
(including the coveted National Safety Council of Australia ‘pinnacle’ award in 2019) and
adopted by over 100 national and international organisations since 2018. Further, in 2020 Dr
Casey was within the top four candidates for the coveted Australian Institute of Health and
Safety ‘Young Safety Leader’ of the year award. In 2019, Dr Casey was recognised as runner-
up in the Queensland Community Achiever Awards within the Health and Safety category.

Dr Casey is an expert safety capability trainer and presenter, having done numerous keynote
presentations and industry workshops and training programs. He has a dedicated YouTube
channel and several free Udemy courses that provide free safety education to health and
safety professionals. Dr Casey has taught into the Graduate Safety Leadership program and
educates mature aged safety professionals from industry in contemporary safety topics in his
role at Griffith University.

As an expert in organisational culture, leadership, and teamwork, Dr Casey is well-positioned
as an ambitious and passionate early career researcher and professional consultant with
strong leadership and applied research capabilities. He is committed to building products,
tools, and educational experiences that give workers the capabilities to work ‘at the edge’ of
safety and beyond, and help organisations to make informed decisions that improve the
conditions in which safety-critical work takes place.

Senior Research Scientist – Sentis Pty Ltd. May 2011 – Feb 2016
Specialising in safety and general occupational health, in this role I support the research
needs of internal and external clients. Responsibilities include: development and
administration of quantitative surveys (e.g., safety climate survey), design and management
of empirical research studies, intervention design and evaluation, statistical analysis, client
reporting, and representation of Sentis at professional and academic events (e.g.,
conferences). I routinely travel nationally and internationally to conduct onsite research
projects, present findings to client management teams, and present the findings of studies
at conference (e.g., SIOP, WS&H). Key achievements include: receiving the Sentis
Innovation and Professionalism awards, and developing the commercially-viable Safety
Climate Survey (SCS), Safety Leadership Assessment (SLA), and the Onsite Safety
 Evaluation (OSE) products.
Statistician – Office for Economic & Statistical Research, Qld Treasury Nov 2010 - May 2011
In this position at the Queensland State Treasury Department, I designed and implemented
large-scale population surveys. I was responsible for survey design, project management,

achievements include: successful development and implementation of two Queensland-wide
telephone surveys for state government departments, and project management of a

Research Officer – Relationships Australia Queensland August 2009 – Nov 2010
As the sole research officer for RAQ, I was responsible for designing, managing, and
analysing client satisfaction surveys, conducting program evaluation, assisting with staff
training, and representing the organisation at academic and practitioner-focused
conferences. Key achievements included: successful trial and evaluation of Australia’s first
national online mediation service for the Federal Attorney-General’s Department, and
successful implementation of two state-wide client satisfaction surveys.

Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner – Relationships Australia QLD May 2008 – Mar 2010
In my role as a registered FDRP, I developed clinical interviewing and mediation skills
through conducting phone-based intake interviews and dispute resolution sessions with
separated parents. For three months of this role I acted as a co-ordinator of Australia’s only
national telephone dispute resolution service, which involved investigating client complaints,
scheduling sessions, staff management, and delivering training. Key achievements include:
completion of RAQ’s clinical review process, achieving FDRP qualifications and recognition,
and identification of a resource shortfall that resulted in additional resources being allocated
 to the service.
RESEARCH GRANTS & INDUSTRY FUNDING

My approach to research funding is to balance competitive tenders and grants with smaller
but more frequent consulting income. For each project, I create maximum value by assembling
a fit-for-purpose team that will ensure project deliverables are met. This has resulted in an
extensive academic, industry, and government network that routinely approaches me
proactively for consulting projects. I have also built a strong relationship with emerging funding
bodies such as the Centre for WHS. I have over $1,000,000 in proposals outstanding (as at
August, 2020).
