Tasmania is My Garden 2019

Held annually, the Blooming Tasmania Flower & Garden State Event is
a Tasmania-wide celebration of the beauty of this state’s gardens and
wilderness areas. This year, from 21 September to 6 October there are events
for everyone from the keen garden enthusiast to the committed nature lover
with activities for every member of the family.

Around the state visit our many open gardens, follow the Blooming Tasmania
Bird Trail, Wildflower Trail, Sculpture Trail, or take part in workshops or view
exhibitions that showcase the beauty of Tasmania’s living environment.

The flagship event is the Blooming Tasmania Flower & Garden Festival 2019
that runs over the weekend of 21 and 22 September. It is held annually in
Launceston’s magnificent heritage Albert Hall and adjacent historic City Park.
Come and celebrate the spring equinox and focus on the new beginnings this
time of year brings to our gardens and parks. Discover why Tasmania is
YOUR garden.

Blooming Tasmania Flower & Garden Festival 2019

The Cocktail Party
Everyone is welcome to attend the launch of the Blooming Tasmania Flower
& Garden Festival for 2019 and state-wide event. Tasmania’s Governor, Her
Excellency, Professor the Honourable Kate Warner, will open the Festival and
an associated art exhibition, The flower show – birth, death and everything
in between, which is presented in partnership with Blooming Tasmania and
the University Cultural Collections.

Tasmania is My Garden
Included in your Festival entry is a free workshop plus activities and art
exhibitions upstairs in the John Duncan Room from 11am–3pm Saturday and
Sunday. There’s a lift for ease of access.

Exhibition of mandalas and international children’s peace drawings
Join Aboriginal community artists Aunty Dawn Blazely and Sonya Maher
to create a book. Draw, paint, write, compose and share stories about the
significance that flowers and gardens have had in your life.

Floral Displays in the Albert Hall Atrium
(near Victoria’s Café entrance)
Local floral enthusiasts demonstrate their skills and expertise in floral
arrangements to their peers and the community with a wonderful spectacle
of flowers, colours and designs. Come and view the displays and vote for
your personal favourite! “Floral Display People’s Choice Award” prize kindly
donated by Allans Garden Centre, Launceston.

Kids are welcome to enjoy the jumping castle and there are many other
activities throughout the weekend of the Festival 21–22 September.

Stage installation in Albert Hall: A Natural Landscaped Garden
Proudly presented by the Australian Plants Society Tasmania Inc.
(www.apstas.org.au) the stage installation for the 2019 Festival is a visual
depiction of the diverse Tasmanian environment through a natural garden
landscape. Starting on the left at sea level the planting takes you on a journey
from coastal flora through grasslands, dry forests and wet forests to the
beautiful and unique alpine plants that crown the Tasmania’s mountains.

Blooming Tasmania Gardening Q&A Stand
This popular stand is back again for 2019 in Albert Hall. Marcus Ragus
from Verdant Way Consultancy will lead our line-up of gardening experts
throughout the weekend, who are on hand to talk and answer your questions.
If you want advice on beginning the gardening journey, indoor plants, natural
management of pests and diseases from fungal gnats to garden ‘brats’, or
have specific questions on any topic, our garden experts can help!

The 2019 speaker program continues the Tourism Tasmania branding of
Discover Tasmania and to take you behind the scenery and celebrating the
immense knowledge that exists in the state and beyond. Free talks and
demonstrations are held upstairs in the Tamar Valley Room at Albert Hall on
both Saturday and Sunday. There is a lift for easy access.

10am–10.45am ‘Urban farming with permaculture in Melbourne’ with
Stuart Muir-Wilson, international lecturer, permaculture expert and

11am–11.45am ‘Creating a Honeybee Garden’ with Robert and Debora
Bryan from Be Pure Honey Tasmania. Beekeeper Robert Bryan and Bee

maximising nutrition from the harvest’ presented by Una Hobday, Food

10am–10.45am ‘Growing with Gardening’. Gardens and gardening help us to
grow and develop and also help to grow a better world. Jennifer Stackhouse,
gardening writer, editor and horticulturist.

11am–11.45am ‘Garden Tourism Potential – The Japanese Experience and
the Bridestowe Experience’ with Robert and Jennifer Ravens, owners of the
famous Bridestowe Lavender Estate.

12 noon–12.45pm ‘An Education in the Art of Pruning – Turning Ordinary
Plants into the Extraordinary with the Click of the Shears and the Snip of
the Secateurs. Much more than a trim I’m going for the full coiffeur’ with
Stan Smith, horticulturist, landscape designer and lecturer, Bendigo TAFE.

1pm–1.45pm ‘Invisible Plants’ Discover Tasmania’s native flora from alpine
to coastal. Roy Skabo spends a lot of time wandering the Tasmanian bush
looking at our beautiful flora and sending specimens to the Tasmanian
Herbarium. Roy rediscovered Hibbertia rufa, which had not been seen in
Tasmania for 120 years and was considered extinct in this state.

2pm–2.45pm ‘Success with Heirloom Seeds’ Join Jac Semmler from
The Diggers Club, who will discuss the wonder and diversity of heirloom
seeds and how to get success when sowing seeds. Heirloom varieties are a
gardener’s inheritance passed down from generation to generation. These
plants inspire with their flavour and novelty. Learn the fundamentals of
germination so your garden can produce bumper crops this season.

3pm–3.45pm ‘Tasmania is My Garden – Biophilic State’ Explore ways to
minimise the environmental impact of the built world and learn how to
reconnect people to one another and the natural environment. Tom and Jane

Frederick Mackie – Quaker Plantsman
Artist: Frederick Mackie. The exhibit is based around the plants recorded in
Mackie’s journal during his visit to Van Diemen’s Land when he stayed with
George Washington Walker and his family at Narryna, 1852-1854.

Landslide

Brigitte de Villiers, a South African-born surface designer living in Tasmania.

Into the Vaults of the Tasmanian Herbarium
Come to the Tasmanian Herbarium and see the world’s largest collection of
Tasmanian plant specimens. Join its curators, Lyn Cave, Miguel de Salas and
Matt Baker, to hear of famous sea voyages, a moss that grew from the bones
of a dead bushranger, and plants as rare as orange-bellied parrots.
