Fourth Sunday of Lent - Cuarto Domingo de Cuaresma
LAETARE SUNDAY – Today we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Lent. It is traditionally called “Laetare Sunday”
and derives its Latin name from the first word of the Mass text, "Laetare Jerusalem" (Rejoice, O Jerusalem). It is
a day of joy within the mourning season. The altars may be decorated with flowers, organ playing is permitted
(not just to sustain singing), and the priests wear rose-colored vestments instead of purple. The reason for such
display of joy is explained in a sermon by Pope Innocent III (1216): "On this Sunday, which marks the middle
of Lent, a measure of consoling relaxation is provided, so that the faithful may not break down under the severe
strain of Lenten fast but may continue to bear the restrictions with a refreshed and easier heart." This “midway”
point in Lent is a good time for us to examine the Lenten resolutions we made back on Ash Wednesday and see
if we have been faithful to them. It’s a time to renew those resolutions.

Next Sunday you will notice a dramatic change in the church environment. All the statues as well as the
crucifixes will be covered with purple cloth. The Fifth Sunday of Lent begins the last part of Lent which is called
Passiontide. It includes the last full week of Lent (5th week) and Holy Week In ancient times many of the
crosses in churches were "gemmatae," that is, covered with jewels and without a corpus (body) or with a corpus
of the risen Savior, a sign of the resurrection. These crosses were covered during Passiontide to help people
meditate more on the sufferings of Jesus. If the crosses were covered, it was thought necessary to cover also all
the other pictures and statues. In the course of years, especially influenced by Franciscan spirituality in the 13th
century, the cross "evolved" and most crosses were crucifixes, vividly showing the death of Christ. However, the
"covering custom" continued. The veil on the crucifix is removed during the Solemn Liturgy of Good Friday
while the coverings of the statues are removed at the singing of the “Gloria” at the Easter Vigil.

LENTEN PARISH MISSION IN ENGLISH BEGINS TODAY! – This weekend we welcome Fr. Dominic
DeMario, OP, who will be with us for two weeks conducting the two parish missions. This week in English and
next week in Spanish. Father will preach at all English Masses today and all Spanish Masses next Sunday.

The English mission with then formally start on Monday morning and continue to Thursday, March 28 to 31.
There will be two English conferences each day (with the same content): one in the morning after the 8:15 a.m.
Mass and one in the evening at 7:15 p.m. Please see the flyer in today's bulletin.

A parish mission is a form of a "mini-retreat" of renewal for the entire parish. I still remember the first parish
mission I ever heard as an 8th grader in Catholic school. It made a huge impact in my life and I attribute the
beginning of my vocation to that mission. I urge you to make a bit of time for it to renew your spiritual life.

LENTEN REMINDERS – As part of Lent, please remember that we have the Stations of the Cross devotion each
week. We pray the Stations each Friday of Lent at 9:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. in English and at 7:00 pm in Spanish.
The English Stations in the evening are concluded with Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. We also
have Confessions 3 times per week: Tuesdays during the 7:00 p.m. Holy Hour and Saturdays at 4:00 p.m. and
7:00 p.m. Please take advantage of this opportunity to cleanse your soul and receive the grace of the Sacrament
of Penance.

THANK YOU! – I never cease to be amazed at the kindness and generosity of our parishioners. Two weeks ago,
the Archdiocese made an appeal to help with the humanitarian efforts as a result of the terrible war in Ukraine.
Our parishioners immediately responded, and the second collection was a total of $4,174.00 (with no advance
notice) which was immediately sent to the Propagation of the Faith to assist especially with the refugees. Thank
you and may God bless you for your generosity! Let us keep up our prayers for an end to the hostilities.

FROM PASTOR'S DESK - CON'T:

LET’S GO PAPERLESS! – One of the things that the shutdown of 2020 made very real is the need for us
to give our tithes to the parish via electronic giving. Electronic giving is a tremendous convenience for our
parishioners as well as for the parish. Many parishes throughout the country and in our own Archdiocese
have long ago switched to electronic giving in an effort to get rid of the old-fashioned checks and cash. The
pandemic shutdown actually made it absolutely imperative that as many people as possible switch to this form
of giving and many of our parishioners have done so. If you have not yet signed up, please do so at: www.
standrewpasadena.org and click on the "donate" button.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: TALLIS SCHOLARS COMING TO ST. ANDREW'S! – The world renowned
Tallis Scholars is a British professional early music vocal ensemble normally consisting of two singers per part,
with a core group of ten singers. They specialize in performing a cappella sacred vocal music. They tour widely
around the world performing over 70 concerts in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. This year we
are very honored to be hosting their final concert of their USA tour. It will take place on Saturday, May 7th.
Tickets are now on sale on our parish website at: www.standrewpasadena.org

This is a concert NOT to be missed!

LOST AND FOUND – Almost on a weekly basis we find items in church left behind by people: glasses, prayer
books, ear pods (to listen to the ball game while I preach), car keys (I don't know how they get home!), etc.
Please note that all these items are taken daily to the Pastoral Center where we have a Lost and Found drawer.
If you forgot a particular item, please go there to retrieve it. If it's not there, please leave name and telephone
number as sometimes things will turn up a few days later.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NONDISCRIMINATION POLICY 2021-2022 SCHOOL STUDENT
NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY
The school, mindful of its mission to be a witness to the love of Christ for all, admits students
regardless of race, color, national origin, and/or ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs, and
activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school.

The school does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, disability, medical condition, sex, or national
and/or ethnic origin in the administration of educational policies and practices, scholarship programs, and
athletic and other school-administered programs, although certain athletic leagues and other programs may
limit participation and some archdiocesan schools operate as single-sex schools. While the school does not
discriminate against students with special needs, a full range of services may not always be available to them.

Decisions concerning the admission and continued enrollment of a student in the school are based upon the
student's emotional, academic, and physical abilities and the resources available to the school in meeting the
student's needs.

Fourth Sunday of Lent - Cuarto Domingo de Cuaresma
