WELCOME TO NEW STUDENTS: Alazay Honey Reeve, Arcadian Drewet Walters & Anahera-Aroha Minhinnick PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE—Whaea Viv Welcome back to Term 3, we hope that you enjoyed spending time with your children and family during the holidays. The term is now 2 weeks in and it has been action packed. Our whole school trip to Motat was successful and enjoyed by all. Thank you to all the parents and whanau that came along to support us, we couldn't have done this trip without you. Our tamariki were engaged in the learning during their class visits and displayed exemplary school values throughout the day when they were exploring Motat. We have celebrated Kiribati and Cook Island week so far this term. Thank you to Miss K and the parent helpers that ran a school wide rotation to give the students a taste of the 2 cultures. We will be celebrating a few more language weeks this term, please check our calendar on the website to see when these are and if you would like to assist during that week we would love to hear from you. School lunches, breakfast club, fruit in schools and Kids Can snacks are all still part of our daily opera- tions. We encourage you to send your students to our wonderful breakfast club every morning at 8.00 in the hall and encourage them to be part of our school lunch program. These lunches are provided by the MOE and meet strict health guidelines. If you choose to send your child to school with their own lunch we would encourage and appreciate that these lunches are healthy and not just packet food that are high in sugar, sodium or additives. Last night we held our Learning conversations with our students and their whanau. Thank you to all of you who made the effort and showed an interest in your child/s learning and achievements. This year our Mid Year Reports have changed to a Discussion Report. These are available when you meet with your child/s teacher. If you could not make our Learning conversation night and would like to meet with your child/s teacher/s please contact the office or email the teacher directly to set up a time to meet, zoom or phone after school. I am also available to meet with you if you have any concerns about your child's learning or behaviour. We work as a team at Birdwood School and we want the very best for every student as every student matters to us. We have just received the go ahead from the MOE to proceed with our office administration block. We had planned to move out at the end of Term 2, and will now move out in the next few weeks. We will let you know when this will be, however if you see barriers around the office area you will find Debbie and Vicky working from Anawhata. Signs will be erected to direct you to the temporary office space. You are able to call the office on 09 833 8479 if you have any concerns.
Continued . . . Children have enjoyed the sessions so far and are working well with their peers. Most of them have made progress with both goals so far. However, they still need to continue working towards achieving their goals. The senior students are working collaboratively with the Juniors and Middle school students. They have formed good relationships among themselves. Our children support each other with their learning and are becoming confident in representing their cultures. It has been a pleasure to watch them enjoy working with each other and to grow in confidence when sharing their learning goals, as well as their cultural backgrounds. The students’ families are very supportive, always ready to lend a hand and asking for ways to get involved.
Birdwood School’s annual attendance target is for all pupils to have an annual
attendance rate of 90% or more. This is in line with the national target for

SPORTS UPDATE
Kia ora whanau.
We only have 2 weeks left of netball. Your last game will be Monday 16th August. Times to be confirmed still.
We then have a tournament for all teams. I will add the dates in case you want to come and support your childs team.
I am very proud of the fact that this term our teams have been playing short of numbers due to student's being sick.
The weather is much colder this term and I have had to cancel one Year 5 game due to this.
Your coach or myself will keep sending texts with information of your games. Please be at the netball courts on time
as warm-up is very important for our bodies and muscles to minimise injury.
Thank you to the many whanau that have supported our netball this season. We appreciate this immensly.
Tuesday 10th August - Year 7, Year 7/8 girls, Year 7/8 Boys team. We will travel from school to Te Pai Netball courts,
Lincoln Road (opposite Bar 135). Times of arrival will be sent home with your child this week. Please make sure you
have signed the consent form or confirm via Skool Loop. Return to Matua Kevin or Miss P by Monday 9th August. I will
be taking the Year 7/8 girls and boys teams. Whaea Angel will take the Year 7 team.
Please feel free to see/contact me if you would like any further information.
Tuesday 17th August - Year 5 and Year 6 teams will travel to Te Pai Netball courts for the tournament. Information will
be sent home next week. Please ensure you sign your child's consent form or use Skool Loop to confirm attendance. I
will be coaching the Year 5 team for the day and Whaea Kaela will coach her Year 6 team.
Once again, keep up the great effort, participation, and team work as our season is soon coming to an end.
Keep well, stay safe and blessings whanau!
Whaea Marcia. Our Kiwi Kapers Concert introduces Primary & Intermediate students to the full APO live in
concert! Each year we create an original production in collaboration with other arts
organizations.
Yesterday our intermediate students were very fortunate to attend one of the concerts held at
the Kiri Te Kanua Centre. Our students thoroughly enjoyed sharing this experience with many
other Auckland Schools. Thank you to Matua Kevin & Whaea Simone for organizing the trip
and to our wonderful parent helpers.

The Hell Pizza Reading Challenge has rolled around again!
If you haven't taken part in the challenge before, this is how it
works:
Each student gets a pizza wheel. Students receive a stamp/hole
punch/sticker on their pizza wheel for each book they read. Once
they have read seven books, they go to the office to get the
school stamp on their wheel, and then they can exchange their
completed pizza wheel for a FREE 333 kids’ pizza at HELL.
It's a great way to encourage students to read. For older stu-
dents, I counted 1 chapter of larger books as 1 stamp on their
pizza wheel.
If you would like any more information or resources go to NZ UNIFORMS
the Reading Challenge page. Let me know if you need any more
pizza wheels at any point, and I can order more. For all your Uniform Needs
call now (09) 972 0272.

GET READING!! in store.Uniforms are littering!
By Joanne Siale, Amy Ardern, and Malaga Tema
You may be a tidy kiwi, but did you know your clothes may be littering
without you knowing? A lot of New Zealand children don’t have a
choice whether they litter or not. Surprisingly, most school uniforms are
bad for the environment.
About 60% of material used in clothing is plastic. Lots of school uni-
forms are made out of polyester. New Zealand charity Sustainable
Coastlines say that every time you wash polyester, little microfibres
come out. It leaks from your clothes, pollutes the ocean, and kills sea
life. Microfibres have been found in the air, rivers, soil, rain, drinking
water, table salt and even in your relaxing holiday beer! Uniforms that
are made out of plastic are bad for the environment.
The older your clothes, the less microfibers shed. When surveyed, about half of the students at
Birdwood School in Auckland had brand new uniforms and only 29 students had reused uniforms.
Reused uniforms are also a good option because you are buying less polyester.
Some students don’t have a choice whether to wear plastic or not. Out of 10 primary schools on
the New Zealand Uniform website, four schools had polar fleece jumpers. Viv Carr, the deputy
principal at Birdwood School, said it would be a good idea for schools to have wool jumpers in-
stead of polyester.“It would be fantastic if we could start wearing wool jumpers, but that would be
up for a New Zealand company to start producing.” However, Ms Carr said that wool might be too
expensive and too hard to wash.
If natural materials are too expensive to buy, there are ways to wash your clothes without harming
the environment. Wash your clothes at a lower temperature, use a lower rotation, do a full load,
and wash your clothes less.
