WELCOME ONCE MORE TO GALA WEEK
STARTING SUNDAY 1ST JULY 2018
Gala Week, that magical time on Broughty’s calendar of 2018 events, has arrived once more, Harry
& Meghan have taken their Wedding vows , the Queen has celebrated her 92nd birthday, however,
most importantly, Gerry Fae The Ferry has her Gala Week!! As usual a tremendous amount of
work has gone into the organising of this years events, this promises to be one of the most exciting and
adventurous weeks on the Broughty Ferry calendar.
Hopefully the elements will be kind to us, with plenty days of sunshine and warmth. Fortunately, Gala
2017 was a fantastic success, plenty sunshine, warm temperatures and most importantly plenty of
visitors, this combination made 2017 one of the most successful ever. This year, we want to see even
more people coming down to the Ferry on the 1st July.
The more funds we collect, the more we can donate to various local charities. Any surplus money will
go towards the purchase of additional Christmas street light displays.The street lights are totally funded
by Broughty Ferry traders and gifted to the people of Broughty Ferry and Dundee. However, without
the support of the DCC who fund the costs of the light installation, there would be no display.
The 2017 light switch on, was a fantastic success, with more than 3000 revellers in attendance. We had
the Eastern School choir, the Hornes fun rides, delicious burgers from Scott bros. complimentary mince
pies, sweeties and hot mulled wine.The Lord Provost as usual, came down to switch on the lights, which
created a terrific carnival atmosphere.
This years Christmas festivities promise to be even bigger and better than that of 2017, in fact we reckon
that 2018’s party will be the best ever !!
Can I take this opportunity to thank all my helpers, organisers, and most importantly, all my family and
many friends, who have given up all their time throughout the last twelve months, to make sure that this
years Gala will be a great success.
Can I give a very sincere thank you to all our 2018 sponsors, a very special thank you goes to our main
sponsors, Belhaven Brewery, who once again have supported Gala week. Is it any wonder that they
are the most respected brewer in Scotland.Their main product is Belhaven Best, there have been
many futile attempts by rival Breweries to copy the magic of Belhaven Best, however
all beer drinkers know that Belhaven Best is the Best of The Best.
If you have the time, and think you can contribute towards our wonderful events in the Ferry, please do

Ye Amphibious Ancient bathing Association affectionately known as “The
Phibbies” are a voluntary organisation founded in 1884 with almost 100
members and holds Scottish charity status.
The Phibbies will celebrate their 135th anniversary on the 1st January 2019, and are unique
in being the only club of its kind left in the country. The Phibbies retain a passion for open
water swimming which has remained the main part of their identity since the early days before
indoor swimming pools.
During the summer months we are based at our purpose built clubhouse in Beach Crescent,
Broughty-Ferry which is part of the 14th Century Broughty Castle Harbour Complex. The
swimmers train here for various open water championships, these championships are held
throughout the summer and a full list of swim dates can be found on the notice board at at our
clubhouse or on our website: www.yeaaba.org.
Our Monifieth swim is on Saturday 1st July leaving Monifieth at 3.30pm with our first swimmers
arriving at the finish (Broughty-Ferry Harbour Wall) at approximately 4.15pm .This is a 3.25
mile This is a tidally assisted, point-to-point, straight-line up-river course using the flooding
flow of the river, with a slight bend around the Castle point, touching and turning at the RNLI
jetty before finishing at the harbour.
The Phibbies also offers Learn to Swim classes along with an indoor training programme every
Friday night (term time only) in a 25M pool at St Johns RC High School Community Village
Wing.The swim school which started last year has continued to develop staedily with spaces
being available after the summer holidays. The Phibbies are the only swim club in Dundee to
offer learn to swim classes. If you are interested or wouod like to help out at the pool please

Last July we sent a team of swimmers to Jersey to participate in the Jersey Round Island
Challenge. Unfortuneately due to adverse wether conditions the teams attempt was postponed
and they now endeavour to complete this challange in July this year.
Volunteering oppurtunities excist for those aged 16-116 to come and escort swimmers (in
a boat), learn boat handling skills and if you prefer dry land training to become an official,
eg. Open Water Judge Level 1. These are fantastic oppurtunities to learn and develop your
team working skills along with aquiring new skills. If you are interested im becoming a
volunteer with The Phibbies contact our volunteer co-ordinadtor Carol-Ann via her email:

This years New Years Dook which is our biggest
fundraiser was very successful with many swimmers
raising money for various charities. We had
Dookers from all over the world including Australia
and Canada. The added attractions-Pipes and
Drums of the 44th Boys Brigade, live music, Hornes
Carnival and the Fancy Dress Parade/Competiotion
all helped to make the day a fantastic sucess. The
2019 New Years Day Dook will take place at 3PM.

Dook Programme you can find forms there too.

THE RULES
Broughty Gala Week’s legendary Window Guessing Competition, first started way
back in 1932, and the rules are exactly the same today! All the participating shops and
businesses are members of The Broughty Ferry Traders’ Association, and have displayed in
their windows an article which they do not sell. The object of the competition is for young
people (under 14) to look at the windows and discover what the ‘odd’ article is. For instance
in the Baker’s shop you might find a teapot or in the newsagent, a paint brush. Remember,
sometimes it will be hard to spot, but children should not go into shops and
ask for clues! The participating shops have a Red Diamond with a number on it in their
window, which corresponds to the number on the entry form on the following page.
