2Introduction
Graduate Outcomes Survey: Class of 2017
This report is a compilation of data gathered in summer 2018 for the annual Graduate Outcomes
Survey issued by the HEA and supplementary data gathered by the Careers Centre, mainly from
LinkedIn searches.
Since 2017 the HEA have required all IOT’s to participate in the annual country-wide Graduate
Outcomes Survey in accordance with the survey template that they have issued for this purpose.
The iadt response rate to the survey was 51%. This would be considerably lower than the average
response rate of 65-70% normally achieved previously when the survey was an in-house voluntary
exercise. A factor contributing to the lower response rate has been the requirements around data
protection under GDPR. Following a data collection initiative at the graduation ceremonies for the
Class of 2018 last November, it is hoped that a better response rate will be achieved in this
summer’s survey.
The requirement to carry out the standardised survey according to the HEA template has limited the
level of analysis/comparative data etc. that has been possible. For example, it is not feasible to
make a real comparison between underlying statistics and trends from earlier in-house surveys with
those gathered via the HEA survey.
I have tried to supplement the HEA survey by carrying out LinkedIn searches for graduates who have
not responded to the survey. While the quality of detail gleaned from these searches is not
comparable to data gathered through direct engagement with the Graduate Outcomes Surveys, I
regard LinkedIn as an excellent source of valid detail regarding career progressions of individual
graduates. So it’s important to note that while the summary data for iadt presented on pp.4-5 of
this report is provided directly by the HEA from data uploaded via Banner the subsequent listings
and pie charts by programme are gathered from a combination of the data submitted to the HEA
and the results of LinkedIn searches.
I feel that where possible it is important to try to maintain the level of detail that the Graduate
Survey has managed to achieve since it was first produced in 2008. In particular the listings of
employers and further study progressions by course are of real interest to current students and
staff. Fulfilling both the HEA requirements of the standardised Graduate Outcomes Survey and the
requirement of individual iadt Departments and programmes for detailed data is a real challenge
under the current format. It is to be hoped that the format and methodology of this important
annual survey can be refined to meet the needs of all concerned in the years ahead.
