Programme Type
The Guesthouse Manager programme is a Provider Programme.
INTEC offers three types of programmes, namely National
Qualifications, Provider Programmes, and Agent Programmes:
National Qualifications are credit bearing qualifications
registered on the NQF and accredited by a Quality
Assurance Body.
Provider Programmes are unique to INTEC and are designed
to increase and enhance your skills and knowledge within your
chosen field.
Agent Programmes are programmes and qualifications for
which INTEC offers tuition, but where INTEC does not issue
the final certificate (the agent body issues the final certificate).

Entrance Requirements
Grade 10 (Std. 8).

Course Duration
You should be able to complete this course within
12 months .

Course Content
Planning the Guesthouse
Many prospective guesthouse owners dream of running a
perfect establishment, but few consider the practical
implications of such a venture. In this module you will learn
more about the planning requirements before you open a
guesthouse, how to conduct market research, as well as how
to evaluate the opportunities in your area.

•   Personal considerations prior to establishing a guesthouse
•   The accommodation industry

•   Establishing primary requirements
•   Developing a SWOT analysis
•   Developing a business plan
•   Determining the style of business

Marketing the Guesthouse and Maintaining
Customer Relations
The long-term survival of your guesthouse business depends
on effective marketing. In this module you will learn more about
the principles of marketing, how to develop effective marketing
strategies, and how to maintain good customer relations. You
will also learn that an effective guesthouse is run like a business
− not a home from home.

Operating the Guesthouse
 The success of a guesthouse depends on thorough knowledge
of all guesthouse operations, such as food and beverage
operations and reception. In this module you will learn how to
set up guesthouse operations systems, and you will be given
the opportunity to practise actual tasks that you would perform
in a guesthouse.

•   The purchasing function
•   Basic cost control

Guesthouse Administration
Many guesthouse owners neglect to maintain their business
records and accounts. In this module you will learn about the
essential records that guesthouse owners need to keep, in
order to run a successful business and to plan for the future.

•   The personnel function
•   Insurance
•   Statutory returns and membership to professional
    organisations
•   Product management (rooms, food and beverage)
•   Operational budgeting
•   Basic accounting
Assessment
You are required to hand in 1 written
assignment to the College.

Award
On successful completion of this course you will receive
your INTEC Certificate in Guesthouse Management.
