Board appoints one member. The board meets monthly on the fourth Tuesday
in the board room at the Richard A. Clark Municipal Service Center located
at 1551 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Pkwy. The board recommends rules and
regulations for the equipping, maintenance, conduct, supervision and control
of the city playgrounds, recreation centers and special facilities. The board
also reviews and provides input for the operating and capital improvement
budgets. Four advisory committees provide citizen and expert input to the
board on various parks and recreation issues: Citizen Golf Advisory, Urban

Flag Retirement
An estimated 3,000 American flags will be retired on Sept. 14 at Glendale
Cemetery from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. These flags have been faded, ripped or
tattered, and will be disposed of properly. Some volunteers are needed.

The United States Flag Code, Title 4, Section 8k states-“The flag, when it is
in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be
destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” Flag Retirement is the
term used to define the proper, dignified way of destroying United States flags
that are no longer fit to serve the nation. Volunteers will assist the Governor’s
Own 49th Regiment in properly retiring flags from our community. Volunteers
will help load the retired flags into the USS Zenti.

with a lesson on bat species found within Iowa. Then, build your own bat box
to take home or donate back to Parks and Recreation. Registration is required
due to limited space. The fee is $10 for each bat box built. This program is for
all ages, but anyone under age 16 must have an adult with them.

explorers around the park on an adventure and eventually lead to the end
destination. Explorers will find interesting facts about Greenwood Park and
small prizes at each pumpkin including the “Great Pumpkin.” Registration is
required. You have until Oct. 17 to register, and a $10 fee applies only to
