GMB Congress 2019!
And for those who were here last year, welcome
back to Brighton. We hope you all have a wonderful
time by the seaside – and get to enjoy some
sunshine when you can.

GMB exists to make a difference for our members and
to improve their lives at work.

We campaign, we organise, we bargain and will leave no
stone unturned to get a better deal for those we represent.
We find issues and we mobilise to do something about them.
We light fires; we don’t sit around and wait to put them out.

This week is about enabling all that to happen.

We’ll debate crucial motions, hear from passionate speakers
from across our union and movement, and celebrate the
big success stories we’ve achieved over the last 12 months.

We know that we are at our strongest when we all pull together
in the same direction. We get the best deal for our members
through worker power, through our collective strength.

Throughout Congress there are plenty of opportunities to
forge new partnerships and build on existing ones, from fringe
events to regional meet ups and of course President’s Night.

So, let’s work hard, have fun and make sure we all leave Brighton
fired up and ready to grow our union, build our workplaces and
change things for our members - together as one.

                                                                            1

Official statistics tell us that Britain has never been safer or healthier,
with workplace deaths at an all-time low. Yet GMB members know
from their own painful experiences that nothing could be further
from the truth. Every death is a tragedy, every death is preventable,
and our speakers will not only give their stories, but explain what we
can all do to reduce the risks at work.

Most in decent, well-paid, well-organised jobs.

Women in the working world is the topic of headlines year in, year
out. From the #MeToo movement to the gender pay gap and
equal pay, women often have a different experience of the working
world. Join our panel for short speeches and a group discussion
about the role of women in the workplace, how women workers
and traditionally women dominated sectors can, should and are
organising and what we can do to challenge the stereotypes of
‘women’s work’.

MAKING WALES A FAIR WORK NATION
THROUGH SOCIAL PARTNERSHIP
Chair: Mike Payne – Regional Political Officer
Speakers: Tim Roache – GMB General Secretary
Martin Mansfield – Wales TUC General Secretary

Social partnership arrangements between Government, employers
and unions in Wales have been key to mitigating many of the worst
outcomes of austerity.

However, statutory underpinning is required to deliver a true social
partnership model in Wales.

One of the key principles must involve an aim to increase collective
bargaining coverage and access to the workplace for trade unions
in Wales. This aim is central to the delivery of fair work in Wales and
fair work outcomes required of procurement and business support
must be made statutory.

UNIONISING THE GIG ECONOMY - CAN THE TRADE

          Social and Economic, TUC
Ed Cross – GMB Senior Rep and Lead Claimant, Hermes
Cornelia Broos – Head of Poste and Logistics UniGlobal Union

Traditional work and employment has changed over the years. We
see a return to more exploitative employment, with low pay and
poor conditions of employment. How do trade unions give hope to
working people? Does exploitation have to be the new norm?

Does GMB and the trade union movement have a relevant strategy?
Are we geared up to respond to these challenges?

How do we organise and represent working people who are often
fearful of their futures, struggling to pay the bills, pay the rent and
put food on the table whilst encountering hostile employers?

Come and listen to our panel of experts, feel free to participate
and share your experiences and ideas. Hear what GMB and others
across the International movement are doing. We may not be able
to provide all the answers, but with your help we will give it good go!

MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID – IS IT THE ANSWER?
Chair: Dan Shears, GMB National HS&E Director
Speakers: Judith McNulty-Green, IOSH (invited)
          Other Speakers to be confirmed

Mental Health First Aid has widely promoted as the approach best
suited to tackling mental health issues at work. The matter has
been raised in Parliament, and calls have been made to changes
Regulations to make MHFA part of general first aid at work.

                                                                      21

Recent IOSH research however has suggested that the MHFA
approach may not be the ultimate answer to mental health at work
issues, and the Health and Safety Executive has not yet supported it.
