HSS Sailing Center

HSS Sailing Center is a committee under Helsingfors Segelsällskap -sailing club. Sailing Center
organises adults sailing courses, training, lectures, races and much more. Sailing season starts in
April with first “talkoo” when all Laser 16 and Elliott 6mr boats are fixed up for sailing. At the end of
April first beginner’s weekend course will be organised and first brave ones will be training on
water. In May starts the actual sailing season. HSS Sailing Center offers three different classes of
boats and trainings tailored for all experience levels. There are plenty of learning opportunities for
both beginners and experienced racers. Season continues till end of October including different
kind of clinics, races, parties, talkoos and so on. At the end of October it’s time to li all boats and
start planning next season.

In season 2017 HSS Sailing Center had about 70 members. The core of HSS Sailing Center is Sailing
Center community which means our members – people who want and can make things happen
together. Being part of the community means participating, learning, doing together and having
fun – and of course sailing. Sailing Center works mainly on voluntary basis so everyone’s input is
important.

Sailing Center training fee is 500€. Your training fee covers access to our fleet and weekly trainings
given by professional sailing instructors. HSS membership (97€/214€) includes free use of the ferry
and discounts on sailing gear and at local restaurants, use of the HSS islands of Andö (Inkoo) and
Getören (Porvoo). Read more under!

Training groups

Laser16 Green - beginners group
This group is for members with little sailing experience, for those who have not tried dinghy sailing
before and for those who want to refresh their memory with the basics. If you have no previous
sailing experience we highly recommend taking part in one of our beginner’s courses. A er a
beginner’s course you know the very basics of sailing and you are ready to join this training group.

Laser 16 Green is a beginner level training. On this level you learn the basics of sailing in theory
and in practice. You don’t need to know whether your future includes race sailing, buying your own
boat or just having fun on the water - the skills learned here are useful in all forms of sailing.
Training happens once a week with changing crew of 3 to 4 persons so you don’t need your own
team.

First group starts at the beginning of May and second group at the beginning of June. Weekly
training continues till end of september.

Elliott Blue - intermediate
In this group sailors concentrate on learning the basics of race sailing. Coached trainings take place
once a week and teams may be fixed or changing - depending on sailors’ preferences. However,
advisable is, that you consider building up your own team if you wish to progress in race sailing
and aim for competitions during the season.

Group starts at the beginning of May. Weekly training continues till end of september.

Match Race Violet
Match racing is a form of sailing where two boats compete against each other. It is really intense
one-on-one sailing where excellent knowledge of the rules, good boat handling skills and seamless
teamwork play a big role. Coached trainings are held once a week and match racing competitions
(Center Cup’s, Match Race G5 or G4) are organized regularly throughout the season. In this group
the teams are fixed, so you can either ask a group member for open spots in an existing team or if
you already have match racing experience, you can gather a new team.

Group starts at the beginning of May. Weekly training continues till end of september.

Race team Red (Sailing league)
This group is for sailors with high ambitions in succeeding in race sailing. You are a race sailor with
personal goals and you love to push yourself for better results. This group’s main goal is to succeed
in Sailing League and the best sailors have a chance to represent HSS in the Sailing League.
Coached trainings are held once a week and teams + roles are fixed/permanent a er finding a
suitable role and team for everyone.

Group starts at the beginning of May. Weekly training continues till end of september.

There must be a minimum number of sailors/teams/boats in a group that training are organised. So
remember to sign up early enough! :)

Voluntary work - commissions and structure

Sailing Center works mainly on voluntary basis so everyone’s input is important. All members must
take part in some of our five volunteer opportunities/ commissions. All events where volunteers
are needed are the best opportunities to get to know other sailors. When signing up for the season
with our form you will choose your commission.

If you see something that needs to be fixed or you have any ideas or feedback, let people know. If
you feel like having a er sail, feel free to organize it. Everyone is welcome to bring up ideas!

There are several ways to get involved in sailing related activities as much as you would like.
Spending time in Liuskasaari and sailing with other members is by far one of the best ways to
spend the summer in Helsinki. It’s up to you how much you want to get involved. But be aware –
sailing can be an addictive hobby and you may notice that you end up using the whole summer
sailing and spending time with fellow sailors on the island ;)

Talkoo
All members must participate in talkoo at least three times per season. Main talkoos during season
2018 will be:

- Spring talkoo 1, 7.-8.4
- Spring talkoo 2, 21.-22.4
- Autumn talkoo 1, 20.-21.10
- Autumn talkoo 2, 27.-28.10

There will be also "mini talkoo" every second week starting from May.

    ● All the groups will start training on week 18, straight a er 1st May
    ● All the trainings will start at 6pm

    ● Tuesday: Red fleet
    ● Wednesday: Wednesday races - open for all groups
    ● Thursday: Violet match (and second Green group starting in June)

Racing events
HSS Sailing Center will organise six Center Cup -events and four match racing G4 events. There will
be at least 10 weekly races which are open for all club members. The main event of the year 2018
will be Match Racing Open Nationals in September.

Sailing Center sailors can also take part in Finnish Sailing League qualifications. More information
about the concept coming in March. Make sure you follow also page “Helsingfors Segelsällskap”
page on facebook!

Wednesday races are for several boat classes, including L16, Elliott 6mr and SM40. A er the race
there’s an a er sail on the island at the Restaurant HSS Paviljong. As there will be no coach to assist
with the boats, you will need to have qualified skipper with skipper rights in the boat. Before being
qualified to skipper your own boat, you're welcome to join the Wednesday races as crew or joining
the organising team. Keep an eye on the HSS SC member agora in Facebook for crew spots.

Hangon Regatta is probably the best sailing event in Finland for sailors of all skill levels. Every year
we have HSS Sailing Center people joining the event. It’s a good place to get to go sail racing or just
have fun with other sailors. There is o en need for extra crew members. We don’t have any joint
arrangements so you need to organize accommodation etc. yourself. It’s definitely worth being
there so don’t hesitate to be active and ask how to get involved.

Fleet
                                Laser 16
Club owns nine L16 boats. Five metres in length
with a 2m beam, the gel-coated glass fibre dinghy
first appeared in 1986 under the 'Laser Weekend'
tag which signalled the sort of family-and-friends
market it was aimed at. A retractable 29.5kg metal
centreboard makes a significant contribution to
the overall 250kg hull weight and to the boat's
feeling of solidity and stability. It has a sizeable
watertight storage locker under the enclosed
foredeck, accessible via a li ing hatch on the
forward bulkhead. Buoyancy is built into the bow
and enclosed side decks, while the cockpit is
self-draining via holes in the full-height transom.
Production of the Laser 16 ceased in the late 1990s
but it is still very popular with families and day
cruising aficionados, and can easily accommodate
five adults. L16 have a jib, main sail and spinnaker.

                                Elliot 6mr
Club owns six Elliott 6mr boats. The Elliott 6m is an
                                Olympic-class keelboat, designed by New
Zealander, Greg Elliott. It was selected for the
women's match racing event for the 2012
Olympics. The Elliott 6m carries a spinnaker pole
and symmetric spinnaker which is considered
more suitable for match racing. 3-4 persons can
                                sail Elliott boat.

                                SM40 / SWEDISH MATCH 40
We have two SM40’s in our use. Closely resembling
a mini ACC boat, the SM40 was designed
specifically for the World Match Racing Tour. SM40
carries 6-10 persons. Boat is designed bu Pelle
                                Petterson and is 12.00m long.

Skipper rights
In order to sail outside the coached trainings, you need to have skipper rights. As a skipper you
have the responsibility over the safety of your crew and the boat which means that you need to
have certain level of experience for obtaining the rights. The skipper rights can be requested for all
boat classes separately depending on your experience and interest.

During the season you will gain more experience and will be able to request skipper rights and
book a boat for self practice. Log into the booking system, select the boat class you wish to sail
(and have skipper rights to) and browse to the training date. You can choose a time from 9-13,
13-17 or 17-21. Only skippers are able to book a boat, but crew members can then be added for the
reservation.

Sailing gear
You don’t need any special gear to start sailing at HSS Sailing Center. For your own comfort, bring
weather-proof clothing, proper shoes (e.g. trainers) and sailing gloves (gardening gloves with good
grip is good option!). It would be good to have your own life jacket but there are also life jackets on
the island that you can borrow in the beginning. In case you want to invest in own sailing clothing,
feel free to ask other members for great tips on what and where to buy. There is few shops in
Helsinki Lauttasaari and many good web stores, for example in England.
