Melbourne Culture & Heritage Melbourne is an attractive Georgian market town known for its creative arts and numerous historic buildings clustered around Melbourne Hall and the Market Place, which includes the market cross and shelter. MELBOURNE HALL & GARDENS A Grade II Georgian country house, Melbourne Hall was once the seat of the Victorian Prime Minister William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, and is the origin of the name of the city of Melbourne in Australia. With more than twenty Grade I listed features, the grounds are the best surviving early 18th Century English garden in the manner of le Notre. The name Melbourne derives from ‘mill on the brook’ and the Hall overlooks the old mill pool known as Melbourne Pool which was picturesquely landscaped for Lord Melbourne. Church Square, Melbourne, DE73 8EN 01332 862502 info@melbournehall.com www.melbournehall.com MELBOURNE PARISH CHURCH St Michael with St Mary’s Church is a Grade I listed parish church and existed when the Domesday Book was compiled in 1086. The current building dates from the early part of the 12th Century and has the feel of a ‘miniature cathedral’. CALKE ABBEY – NATIONAL TRUST Poised somewhere between gentle neglect and downright dereliction, Calke Abbey, the un-stately home, is unlike any other great country estate. The National Nature Reserve awaits discovery and Calke Explore, an outdoor recreation area, provides the perfect base to begin exploring the wider estate through a network of walking and cycling trails. The walled garden offers moments of reflection, where faded glasshouses and a domed orangery tell the story of a country house in decline, while beds burst with colour and seasonal produce, echoing the history of Calke’s working garden. In the Pleasure Grounds, discover views over the house and Deer Park, where a herd of red and fallow deer roam freely.
