style & DESIGN

The biggest mistake that untrained, novice
decorators make is not having a coherent
style that ties everything together. In this
section of the course you’ll learn how to de-
construct and reconstruct any style so that
you can create innovative and individual de-
signs that are beautiful and that reflect your
client’s their tastes and ideals regardless of
your own personal tastes and preferences.
what you’ll learn...

What they are and how to use
  them successfully in interiors

  design styles around the world

& identify the key components of a
variety of styles through the ages
• Style Influencers - Which factors
  influence style developments

visual communication
The biggest question most people
have is, “Can you really teach me
how to draw & communicate my
ideas professionally?”

      The answer is “Yes!”

Scaled drawings and mood boards
are an important part of every de-
signer’s work, not least because
they will give you the chance to
experiment with various layouts and
design options before making any
decisions. These tools can help you
to avoid problems and expensive
mistakes before they occur and they
are also invaluable communication
tools. In this section of the course
we’ll show you how to create im-
pressive presentations that will help
to sell your ideas and ensure the job
gets done the way YOU envision it.
what you’ll learn...
Among the topics covered you will learn:
• Visual Communication – How to use
mood and sample boards to help clients
“see” your design ideas
• Rendered Drawings – You’ll learn step-
by-step art techniques & shortcuts to turn
simple scaled drawings into accurate, pro
fessional illustrations
• Professional Presentation - Learn how
to deliver effective digital & physical presen-
tations that maximise YOUR strengths
colour
Colour is the strongest visual element in any interior design and even the most
expensive materials will look cheap and garish if the colours are clashing. When
a client is paying you to design their colour schemes you simply cannot afford
to get this wrong! You’ll learn simple (yet powerful) tools and techniques so you
can create winning colour combinations every time. Topics covered include:

• The Colour Wheel - how you can use it to develop colour palettes that work
• Successful Colour Combinations - discover the secret of simultaneous con
trast and how to make ANY colour look good
• Working with Colour - using colour to disguise, emphasise and create
  illusions in your interior schemes
• Colour Application - colour is still just one component of interior design;
you’ll learn how to balance it with other style elements
surface finishes
Walls, floors and ceilings have considerable impact in our
designs so you must choose these carefully but it’s not just
about looks!

Well planned interiors balance creativity with practicality, by
incorporating suitable materials that stand up to the wear and
tear of everyday life. This section of the course examines the
main products available for our interior surfaces and reveals
the advantages and disadvantages of each, so you can design
for function as well as aesthetics.
what you’ll learn...
Topics covered include the following:
• Flooring Choices – Explore options, im-
  portant design considerations & how
  specialist preparation and installation
techniques can impact short & long-term
  design decisions
• Paints & Wallpapers – Explore these in
depth so you make the right choices
• Specialist Decorative Finishes – Using
murals, trompe l’oeil & faux finishes to
  achieve dramatic & unique interiors
professional practice
By the end of this course you’ll be ready to start your interior design career
but WHERE DO YOU START? The truth is there are many different career
paths you can pursue and we’ll help you to find the job opportunities that
best suit your unique talents and personal circumstances.

Throughout this course we will be helping you to nurture and develop your
creativity. We’ll also show you how to approach each project with a balanced
and objective mindset. In this module you’ll apply those skills to design your
future AND YOUR career. You’ll research and plan your transition into the in-
terior design and we’ll give you practical strategies and templates so you can
achieve your best potential – personally, professionally and financially.
what you’ll learn...

a proven system to assess where you are
now, where you would like to be and the
best way for you to get there
• Personal development plan – Create
a plan to enable you to achieve your ca-
reer goals and continually develop these
throughout your career
• Getting paid – Explore salaries and

curtains & soft furnishings
Curtains and soft furnishings have many im-
portant functions and can make or break an
interior design. Window treatments can cost
as much as major items of furniture; so you
can’t afford to get it wrong.

In these lessons we’ll show you how simple
techniques can be used to achieve an interior
that is co-ordinated without looking predict-
able or contrived.

STUDENT STORY - pavlina georgieva (bulgaria)
“I haven’t always known that I have a passion for interior
design, in fact it came into my life through serendipity.
When I was starting my first business some years ago I
noticed that I was paying much more attention to every
little detail of the interior of the place, instead of focus-
ing on other “more important” aspects of the business.
The pattern repeated with my subsequent ideas and by
that point, I knew that interior design is something that
I am really curious about. I felt that it is a “language” I
wanted to be fluent in, but I was lacking the tools, so I
decided to do something about it.

I chose The Design Ecademy because the courses are certified and offered a lot of
flexibility which was crucial for me. Embarking on this design journey with The Design
Ecademy is one of the best decisions I have ever taken. The course has surpassed my
expectations in every single way. The content is amazing - very well structured, very
practical and down to the point. The workload is serious, and the work is challenging.
But I am so happy that I get to push my boundaries and learn and get better every
day, I don’t want to imagine my life without it.

What I like most about this course is that it gives me all the practical skills and knowl-
edge I need to work as a designer, but I don’t feel it is superficial in any way– I am
constantly reminded of the depth and all the amazing possibilities this field offers.
I also love my tutor – she is incredibly knowledgeable, generous and supportive. I
humbly admit that I have already started getting professional design work (outside of
friends and family). I am now in the beginning of my second year and really look for-
ward to seeing where this journey will take me.”

BA Hons in Interior Design
student story - Fakhri ibrahim Travadi (india & kuwait)
Whilst studying with The Design Ecademy Fakhri was able to maximise the flexibility
offered through online learning and continue with his own professional life at the
same time. On completion of his HND he was promoted at work to the position of
Interior Designer. With the experience and skills gained through working in the in-
dustry and from his HND qualification he was soon able to work as a self-employed
interior designer and Fakhri now has his own Interior Design business in Kuwait ser-
vicing both residential and commercial clients.

Fakhri recently completed the final year of a BA Hons in Interior Design with an ex-
cellent result. He was able to take the final “top-up” year because of the strong port-
folio he achieved on his HND qualification gained with The Design Ecademy. As part
of his BA qualification he created a design concept for a Town Hall / Restaurant con-
version and you can see some examples of his work below & in the video opposite.
How to achieve your BA (hons) interior design
The Design Ecademy’s HND course is part of a BA Pathway. This means that The
Design Ecademy has existing agreements in place with educational partners so
that students who successfully complete our HND in Interior Design course may go
straight onto the final year of a BA programme and use it as a “top-up” course. This
is also completely online.

A similar qualification will not necessarily be part of a BA Pathway programme; in
fact, it is NOT the norm. More often than not if you want to get onto the final year of
a BA and your portfolio is not up to standard you will have to do a number of bridg-
ing courses before you can progress onto that final stage.
