Internal Medicine Research Administration: February 13, 2018 Update UU Drug Discovery Core Offers Two New Services: CRISPR Screening and Viral Production The Drug Discovery Core is pleased to announce a new service for genome-scale CRISPR-Cas9 screening. The Core uses a human Crispr pooled sgRNA library targeting over 19000 genes. The service includes lentivirus transduction of the library into cells, screening with treatment, and collection of genomic DNA for next generation sequencing and data analysis. The Core will assist investigators with bioinformatics analysis and followup validation. The Core also starts the service of production of small/large scale viral (lentivirus, adenovirus, adeno-associated virus) packaging, titrations, concentrations and transductions of cells of interest. The Core can provide viruses expressing marker protein (GFP) for use in testing viral expression in different cell types and organs. For CRISPR screening, the Core can provide lenti-Cas9 and lentivirus delivery of Cas9 and sgRNA. Labs that have not yet obtained BSL-2 plus approval from EHS can perform some experiments in the Core facility with training and supervision by Core staff. Center on Aging 2018 Pilot Grant Program

Maximum Budget: $20,000
This annual pilot grant program promotes the development of aging research at
the University of Utah. The goal of the program is to encourage new investigator career development, attract established
investigators to aging research, and stimulate interdisciplinary research collaborations – ultimately leading to new
externally funded research.
Submissions from a wide range of disciplines--from basic biology, clinical sciences, and the social and behavioral aspects
of aging--are encouraged. Priority is given to supporting applications from individuals who are new to aging research and
from two or more investigators who are establishing a new interdisciplinary research collaboration in an aging-related
interest area. Budget limit $20,000.
Principal investigators must have a career or tenure line University of Utah faculty appointment. For more details about

NIH to Launch Genome Editing Research Program In order to advance the use of recent gene technologies, such as CRISPR/Cas9, to treat or prevent genetic diseases, the NIH is planning to grant $190 million over the next six years through a new Somatic Cell Genome Editing program, funded by the NIH Common Fund. NIH's research priorities include developing better genetic tools and better tests for safety and efficacy. The program will begin early this year, after NIH funds become available in an approved FY18 budget. Trailblazer Prize for Clinician-Scientists The Foundation for the NIH (FNIH) opened nominations for the inaugural Trailblazer Prize for Clinician-Scientists. The prize recognizes early career clinician scientists, which includes MDs, DOs, and other clinician scientists. The $10,000 prize recognizes early career clinician-scientists in the United States whose work has the potential to or has led to innovations in patient care. Through the Trailblazer Prize, the FNIH celebrates the transformational work of clinician- scientists, whose research translates basic scientific observations into new paradigm-shifting approaches for diagnosing, preventing, treating or curing disease and disability. Nominations will be accepted through Friday, March 30, 2018 at 1 PM EDT.
