Message from CEO

             Tena koutou katoa!
A very warm welcome to our new and returning students enrolled at the Southern
Institute of Technology (SIT) for 2021. You have made a great choice to study at SIT and
to live in our friendly city of Invercargill.
Ours is a campus where students come from all backgrounds, many different cultures
and of many different ages. One of the very positive aspects of vocational tertiary study
is it’s open to school leavers as well as those who are returning to further study after a
gap in their education. Ours is an organisation of both depth and diversity.
Here at SIT we pride ourselves on linking with local and regional industries and with
the community for our programmes. The community is very involved in helping us
shape our programmes, so we deliver what industry requires. As students you are
likely to also have the opportunity to gain practical experiences in workplaces during
your studies. This supports skill acquisition and also assists in forming relationships
with possible prospective employers. Our facilities at SIT are dedicated to ensuring we
offer state-of-the-art technologies to help you learn and be the best you can be as a
student and a future employee.
Statistics from our 2020 graduate outcome survey indicate 96% of graduates were
either in work, studying, or intending to study further and 93% of graduates were
overall satisfied with the quality of their programme. If you make the most of this
learning journey with us, we are confident that you too will feel the same when it is
time for you to graduate from your selected programme of study.
Take advantage of your time here in beautiful Southland. We have close access to
beautiful lakes such as Lake Te Anau and Lake Wakatipu, the wild, untamed beauty of
the Catlins, Oreti Beach and Riverton which make delightful swimming experiences,
as well as many walking and cycling trails. Work hard; enjoy what Southern Institute of
Technology and our province has to offer, and you will be rewarded for your efforts.
Study well and have a productive and enjoyable year.

Maree Howden
Acting Chief Executive

Kia Ora, Hello!
On behalf of the City of Invercargill, welcome to the
Southern Institute of Technology, New Zealand.
SIT is the pride of Southland. As a government tertiary
institution; it is committed to quality education and
I encourage you to make SIT your choice for higher
education. SIT provides a dynamic, innovative and
friendly environment for domestic and international
    students alike.
While studying with us, you will be able to enjoy
Southland, New Zealand’s most picturesque region.
We live in a region full of adventure and recreational
opportunities through to extreme sports challenges.
Not only will you be able to gain a world class
education with SIT, you will be able to do so in the
    world class environment of Southland.
Invercargill has excellent sporting facilities such as
the SIT Zero Fees Velodrome, New Zealand’s first
indoor cycling velodrome, an olympic sized swimming
pool and a major indoor stadium. My council also
helps to sponsor a wide range of events for recreation
    and entertainment.
You will also be able to enjoy our southern hospitality.
Invercargill is a safe community that welcomes
students from all over the world. It’s also a great
place if you are considering living and working in New
Zealand. Southland’s unemployment rate is one of
the lowest in the country. As a result, we actively seek
skilled migrants to join our community.
So make the smart choice: choose SIT and Southland.
I look forward to meeting you in Invercargill soon.

    Mayor Tim Shadbolt

INVERCARGILL
AND
SOUTHLAND
Southland – a genuine Kiwi experience! Southland
is New Zealand’s southern most province and
is a region of rich natural contrasts, beauty and
wildlife, boasting quality tourist destinations.
The population of Southland numbers around
100,000 people who have an international
reputation for being incredibly hospitable to
visitors coming to the region.
Primarily an agricultural economy, Southland has
gained a top reputation nationwide as a region
for producing innovative, high quality, tertiary
education programmes.
Invercargill, the capital city of Southland, has a
population of 55,000. It is big enough to cater for
your lifestyle needs, yet small enough to provide a
stable and friendly atmosphere in which to focus
on your study.
Invercargill is situated on the southern coast of
New Zealand. The commercial heart of Southland,
it is a flat, spacious place, where it is easy to find
your way around and enjoy a variety of shops,
restaurants and cafes. Accommodation and living
costs are considerably lower than in other major
cities in New Zealand. There is a progressive
increase in the number of students and tourists
coming from China, India, Korea, Indonesia, Nepal,
Russia, Philippines, Sri Lanka Brazil, Germany
and Malaysia.
Invercargill is the gateway to popular tourist
destinations such as Queenstown, Stewart Island
and Catlins, which are all within driving distance
for a good day out and a return trip before
evening. Few regions in New Zealand can better
the diversity of mountains, lakes and fiords,
historic gold mining towns and lush countryside
that Southland has to offer.
