The Thompson Ranch is located in Munday, Texas. It is spread over three

ranches in three Texas counties. Three generations of the Thompson family have

lived and ranched in the Rolling Plains area, beginning in the early 1900s.

Thompson Ranch is a cow/calf and yearling operation, running yearlings on

wheat pasture in the winter and grass in the summer months. The 1,800 head cow/

calf operation is also run in Hardeman and Knox counties. The ranch also has a

set of mares and raises registered quarter horses for use on the ranch. The ranch
runs a band of 20 mares and two stallions. The stallions are turned out each spring

and are pasture bred to the mares. Two to three select mares are bred to outside

stallions each year.

acreage. He later gave his sons, E.P. and S.A. Swenson, the land to develop and as

a result, the Swenson Brothers ranch was born. The brothers purchased additional

land and by the early 1900s ranch operations comprised of almost 500,000 acres

Vicars Cattle Company, located in north Texas, was established in the early

1980’s when owner Carroll Vicars began his own ranching business after the

partnership was dissolved with his father-in-law and brother-in-law. Current day-

to-day management is a partnership between owner Carroll, his son Doug and

son-in-law, Ken Jarosz. Presently, the ranch consists of a cow/calf and yearling

operation. All yearlings are pre-conditioned in traps before being turned out

either on grass or wheat, where the horses play a vital role in the maintenance of

the cattle. The family strives to continue the ranching tradition for their future

generations by using quality horses in the daily management of the ranch as well

as being competitive in cow horse and cutting competitions.
