D i s c o nnecting A municipal by-law now prohibits citizens
d o wns p o uts from connecting their downspouts to their
foundation drain.
By taking the water from the downspouts out of the equation, this significantly decreases the
amount of water discharged into the sewer system during heavy rains, helping to prevent overflows
of untreated water at the pumping stations, while at the same time reducing the amount of water
to be pumped and cutting wastewater treatment costs.
In order to comply with this by-law, downspouts must extend 1.5 m from the building toward
a permeable area to encourage water to soak into the ground.

Composting dead leaves: an eco-friendly solution!
Dead leaves make excellent compost. Simply rake them into a pile, mulch them with the lawn mower,
and there you have it! Move the pile of mulch to a corner of your yard, making sure it’s not too thick.
Sprinkle with nettle fertilizer* and, by the spring, the leaves will have broken down completely.
* Nettle fertilizer is a nettle-based mixture whose unique properties stimulate plant growth and repel most
harmful pests, aphids, and mites.
