water m anage ment 5 D i s c o nnecting A municipal by-law now prohibits citizens d o wns p o uts from connecting their downspouts to their foundation drain. By taking the water from the downspouts out of the equation, this significantly decreases the amount of water discharged into the sewer system during heavy rains, helping to prevent overflows of untreated water at the pumping stations, while at the same time reducing the amount of water to be pumped and cutting wastewater treatment costs. In order to comply with this by-law, downspouts must extend 1.5 m from the building toward a permeable area to encourage water to soak into the ground. First, disconnect the downspout from the foundation drain. Then, 1.5 m divert the water drained from your by the downspout 1.5 m home away from your home into: • a rock bed lawn • a flower bed • a garden or a rain water harvesting system, such as a barrel.
