1A Message from the City
Summer is here!
I
n Spring, the City began a multifaceted renovation of the Civic Center
including replacement of the HVAC system, ADA compliant restrooms,
electrical upgrades, and refurbishment of staff offices/work areas. During the
renovations, City Hall operations have been moved to the Community Center. At
the time of this publication, the Civic Center is expected to be reopened in June
2021. Until the Civic Center is reopened, the water billing dropbox will remain
in the Police Department lobby.
Also in Spring, the City finished installation of new park equipment at El Rancho
Verde Park. The City received a subsidy on the purchase of new equipment. The
previous equipment was installed in 2006 and was in serious decline. The park
is scheduled to reopen the first week of May 2021.
We are very excited for the two new restaurants coming to town, Popeye’s and
Starbucks! Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen, located on Valley View Street north of
La Palma Avenue, is expected to be completed at the end of April with a grand
opening scheduled for May. Starbucks, located on the corner of Moody Street
& Orangethorpe Avenue, is expected to be completed end of May with a grand
opening scheduled for June. Please remember to Shop Local when you can.
It helps our businesses and our City.

the week, residents, on their scheduled trash pickup day, can place large
items on the curb or by the end of the driveway by 6:00 a.m. for removal. For
more information on Spring Cleanup Event please see page 9.

T
he La Palma-Cerritos Branch of the American Association of University Women
(AAUW) continues to work to achieve equity for women and girls during the COVID
19 pandemic by raising funds to encourage women and girls to increase and achieve
their educational goals. In 2021, branch members raised over $2,300 for the AAUW
Fellowships and Grants Fund for graduate women. In spring, the branch awarded two
Academic Achievement Awards of $1,250 to two women from Cerritos College who will be continuing their education at a
four-year college or university.
In January of 2021, AAUW California made plans to sponsor three Virtual STEM Tech Trek Campers for summer 2021 and
informed AAUW CA Branches that the girls who were selected in 2020 would also be eligible to attend one of the camps.
The La Palma-Cerritos AAUW Board approved a $400 sponsorship for each of the four 8th grade girls to attend the camps
which will have Robotics as the core subject. It is our hope after attending the Virtual Stem Tech Trek Camp, these girls will
be inspired to continue their STEM education in high school and college and pursue STEM careers in the future.

School is celebrating its 25th anniversary of supporting
graduating seniors for education beyond high school.
Since the Foundation’s inception, it has awarded in excess of
$175,000 to over 260 John F. Kennedy High School Seniors.
As of this writing the Foundation has almost completed
the review of the 84 applications from seniors at Kennedy
High School. Most everything in the application process
needed to be changed because the students were not on campus. The changes
kept students, faculty, and the Foundation scrambling to make it work for the
students. When all the applications are processed the foundation is prepared to award a total of 19 scholarships worth
$17,000.
This is the second year the foundation has not been able to have the fundraising and award recognition dinner to support
scholarships. If you would like to help the Foundation, donations can be made on our website at www.jfkscholarshipfoundation.
