THE WAY TO THE SUMMIT!
The SchafbergBahn is Austria’s steepest cog railway.
Since 1893, it has run from St. Wolfgang to the top of the
1,783 meters-high Schafberg.
Modern and vintage cog locomotives chug up the mountain,
making the ride an absolutely unforgettable experience. With
its striking peak, the Schafberg is one of the most beautiful
lookout mountains in Austria. All around are the glistening lakes
of the Salzkammergut, while your eyes roam from the Bohemian
Forest in the north to the Alps in the south. After the ride, stop
for refreshments at the Himmelspforte or at Hotel Schafbergspit-
ze, enthroned at the summit since 1862 and Austria‘s oldest
mountain hotel.
The train travels through meadows and forests, from St. Wolf-
gang across the provincial border between Upper Austria and
Salzburg, to the Dorneralm siding (elev. 1,015 m). Here, the
vintage locomotives have to refi ll their water tanks. The journey
then continues to the Schafbergalm halt (1,363 m), which was
renovated by Salzkammergutbahn GmbH true to the historical
original. For the last ten minutes up to the Schafbergspitze
mountain station (1,732 m), the SchafbergBahn cog railway once
again huffs & puffs steeply uphill. Even during the ride itself, the
views are absolutely unique.

General Information
› For groups of 20 or more, reservations are required.
› Dogs riding on the ferries or cog railway must be muzzled and
on a leash.
› Prams may not be transported on the
SchafbergBahn cog railway.
› For safety reasons, children ages 4 and up must have their own
seat. The trains use diesel- as well as steam locomotives.

INTERESTING FACTS
The over 125-year-old steam-powered cog locomotives are some
of the oldest in the world that are still in operation. Since fewer

Ferries have been running on Lake Wolfgangsee since
imperial times. In 1873, the paddle steamer ”Kaiser Franz

as then, this photogenic vintage ship shuttles between the MS Österreich
