1LSAC CONSTRUCTION
Lamar Senior Activity Center was built in 1978 to serve the Austin community as the very
first senior activity center. This amazing building has served us well and continues to be
one of the busiest centers in the city. However, as with any facility after 44 years of use,
projects must be completed to ensure that the facility continues serving our patrons
safely.
You may be aware that the center has undergone multiple improvement projects over the
last few years, including the kitchen remodel and, most recently, the asbestos abatement
in south hall rooms and offices. As part of our continued improvements, the city will per-
form asbestos abatement and install a new wood floor in the Multipurpose Room/
Ballroom started August 15th and continues into October 2022.
We understand that the timing of this project is not ideal, but this has been in the planning
phase for years, and now that the funds are available, we need to move forward. Staff is
working diligently to get the facility prepped and move classes and programs so that you
can continue participating in the programs you enjoy during this construction time. Please
review this program guide for all updates on your favorite fitness classes. Again I want to
thank you for your patience and understanding as we take this major step forward for the
center.
Kelly Maltsberger, CPRP
Program Manager – Adult 50+ Programs
POSSIBLE CLOSURE NOTICE
AT TEN TI ON — ATT ENTI ON —-ATT ENT ION
As we move through the asbestos abatement and new wood floor installation in the Multipurpose
Room, there may be days that the fumes from the wood sealer and varnish may cause the
center to close. This action would be necessary for everyone’s safety.
Please note the LSAC staff will do their best to contact participants if closures are required.
Unfortunately, we cannot predict when closures will occur since much of the process depends on
the correct humidity and weather conditions.
Thank you for your cooperation throughout this process!

3A Letter from Paula Brown, LSAC Advisory Board President
“LET’S GO NUTS!” We are excited to announce that our Annual Pecan Cracking and
Nut and Honey Sales Fundraisers will begin soon. And we will need our incredible volunteers
to help make them successful!
Due to the pandemic, we haven't had this critical fundraiser since Fall 2019. It's been three
years since we have raised significant funds for the Center, programs, and events. We have
missed doing this for our longtime customers, and we know they have missed us, too, with the
calls and emails we've received.
It's Really Happening!
Beginning in November, we will offer our pecan cracking services again to the public for the low
price of only 50 cents per pound. And back by popular demand, we will be selling those won-
derful Cheyenne pecans, Stroup local honey, and AustiNuts products for the holiday season. All
these yummy selections are from family-owned businesses, local farmers, and vendors. Please
help support them and the Center by purchasing their products!
I love so many of the treats from the wide selection of AustiNuts products. I can't wait to make
some pecan pralines or my mom's famous pecan pie with those incredible Cheyenne pecans!
And who doesn't love local honey with its outstanding healing abilities? Need a last-minute gift
for any occasion? Just put one of these goodies in a gift bag, and you are good to go to any
party. You won't have to worry about going to the store at the last minute and standing in line.
How simple and elegant is that? Got grandchildren in school? Give them a selection of these
healthy products to snack on and enjoy during finals.
We will be asking for volunteers to start cracking pecans in November. Next, we will need vol-
unteers to sell nuts and honey beginning in early November through December and possibly
into early January. You can choose what you would like to do—crack pecans, assist our pecan
crackers with intake, or sell packaged nuts and honey in the lobby. We only need a few hours
of your time every week. You can also volunteer to be on call as a substitute for specific days,
just in case, our scheduled volunteer cannot work. ALL volunteers are appreciated!
Any time you volunteer, sign in and out at the Center's front desk and record the number of
hours worked. Then, at the end of the year, we list all volunteers who gave their time to the
Center, and those wonderful people are invited to a Volunteer Appreciation Event.
Remember, this fundraiser helps the Board purchase needed equipment for the Center and pay
for activities for everyone to enjoy year around. So, if you want to volunteer, let the Center know
by email at Lamarsenioractivitycenter@austintexas.gov or give your name and number to the
person working the front lobby. A board member will contact you soon. Remember, volunteer-
ing for anything helps the Board and the City staff provide more services for all participants at
little or no cost.
Programs, events, and services for adults 50 and above.

conserve nature through changing land management and industrial practices.
This lecture will trace that influence of Humboldt’s ideas of nature, science, and nature conservation on the
development of American environmental management and environmentalism from the 19th into the 20th
