Legion Youth Remembrance Contest
            INFORMATION FOR TEACHERS
 Dear Teachers in B.C. and Yukon,
 Honouring Veterans through the arts leaves a lasting legacy and we are asking for your help in continuing to do this by
 encouraging your students to enter our Youth Remembrance contests.
 The Legion’s Youth Remembrance contests have categories for all students in grades 1 through 12. This is a great way to
 engage your student’s talents through artistic expression, while learning about duty, service, and sacrifice.
 Teaching tools, samples of past winners, judging guidelines, entry forms, and all of the rules and regulations are available
 on-line at legion.ca/youth/contests. We’ve also included a few samples of these items in this package for your
 convenience.
 Contest deadlines for all categories is November 15th. Entries must be submitted at your local Legion branch on or before
 that date. To find your local Branch, please visit: legionbcyukon.ca/branches/find-a-legion-branch and all contest
 submissions must include a completed and signed entry form.

 Contest Categories:
 Poster – Grades 1-12
 Separate categories in Black & White and Colour. Provincial cash prizes range from $100 to $250 and
 a trip to Victoria for Senior Winners; National cash prizes from $150 to $1,000 and a trip to Ottawa.

 Essay– Grades 4-12
 Provincial cash prizes range from $150 to $250 and a trip to Victoria for Senior Winners
 National cash prizes from $200 to $1000 and a trip to Ottawa.

 Poetry – Grades 4-12
 Provincial cash prizes range from $150 to $250 and a trip to Victoria for Senior Winners;
 National cash prizes range from $200 to $1,000 and a trip to Ottawa.

 Video – Grades 7-12 (BC & Yukon Residents Only)
 Provincial cash prizes range from $150 to $250 and a trip to Victoria for Senior winners.

Regulations for Poster Contest

1. All entries to be submitted to the local Legion branch.

2. Entries will be no larger than 56 cm x 71 cm.

3. All entries will be hand drawn/painted in one of the two categories:
        Full colour
        Black and White

4. Entries will be judged on originality, expression of designated subject drawing
and illustration. COMPUTER GENERATED ENTRIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

5. The poster shall reflect REMEMBRANCE with a Canadian theme. If symbols
are used, Canadian symbols such as Canadian and provincial flags, coats of arms,
and representative flowers, birds or animals, as well as all forms of Canadian
historical and current military dress shall be pre-eminent.

6. Contestants may enter both a Colour and a Black and White Poster, but may
submit only one entry for each.

7. Candidates must complete an official Registration Form, available from the
local Legion branch or on line at legion.ca/contests, and attach it to their entry
(no staples please).

8. National 1st place posters will be displayed at the Canadian War Museum in
Ottawa for one year. 2nd and 3rd place national winners will be displayed at
Parliament Hill during Remembrance week. All artwork will be returned to the
artists through Provincial Commands.

9. Students who have been out of the educational system for more than two
consecutive years are ineligible to compete in the Poster Contest at any level.

Regulations for Literary Contest

1. All entries to be submitted to the local Legion branch.

2. This contest is open to all students in the Canadian school system.

3. Entries may be submitted in either English or French.

4. Entries will be marked on the basis of originality of thought, expression,
presentation,
grammar, spelling and Canadian content.

5. Candidates must complete an official Registration Form, available from
the local
Legion branch or on line at legion.ca/contests, and attach it to their entry
(no staples please).

6. Candidates will use only one side of the page.

7. Entries must not exceed the word or line limit.

8. Contestants may submit an Essay and a Poem, but may submit only one
entry for
each category.

9. The copying or reproducing of previously published works in whole or in
part,
without either the written permission from the author/source or, without
identifying the author/source in the work will result in the work being
automatically
disqualified.

10. Students who have been out of the educational system for more than
two
consecutive years are ineligible to compete in the Literary Contest at any
level.

Eligibility: Grade 7–12 Students in British Columbia and Yukon
Submission Deadline: November 15th each year

Parental Consent - I (name of parent) ________________________________ consent to have
(child’s name) ________________________________submit a video for the Legion Remembrance
Video Contest. I also verify that the work done in this video is 100% the work of above named
student. The Legion is hereby authorized to use the Remembrance Video for non-profit
promotional programs.

Step One
CREATE a 3-4 minute Remembrance Video to explain what Remembrance means to you and why it
is important for young people to carry forth the Torch of Remembrance. The music you use in your
video should be original, or creative commons, or attached via Audio Swap from Youtube.

Step Two
UPLOAD the Remembrance Video to your YouTube channel. It’s super simple to create a YouTube
channel if you don’t have one already.

Step Three
COMPLETE this submission form with parental consent and signature.

Step Four
SEND your completed submission form and the URL to your YouTube video to
info@legionbcyukon.ca by November 15 each year. We will then share your video on our YouTube
channel, website, Facebook and Twitter.

Step Five
SHARE – Get your friends to “like” your video on our YouTube channel. This isn't counted in
judging, but it's nice to share your work!
