Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mothers and mother figures of Mater Christi!
On this day, let us remember Our Mother; Mary, the Mother of Christ. On Mother’s Day 1956, the Mother of
Mother’s Shrine was dedicated to our Blessed Mother. Although we all have enjoyed our beautiful Shrine, do
we know the history of how it was made or came to be? Below is a brief history of the Mother of Mothers
Shrine...

Mater Christi Church and the people of the parish have always fostered a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin
Mary. On Mother’s Day, 1956 the Mother of Mothers Shrine was dedicated by Samuel Cardinal Stritch. The
white Carrara marble statue that has drawn devotees from around the globe, was sculpted in Pietrasanta,
Italy. This statue depicts the Blessed Virgin and Christ Child gazing benevolently upon a modern-day mother
and infant and beautifully illustrates the special relationship between the Mother of Christ and mothers
everywhere. Every spring the Shrine is the site of a May Crowning by the parishioners of Mater Christi.

The decorative design on the base shows the Mystical Rose, which is a well-known symbol of the Blessed
Virgin. The Mystical Rose has its five petals each of which represent a major feast that pertains to the Divine
Motherhood, to Mary as Christ-bearer. The five feasts are the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Nativity, The
Purification, and the Maternity.

Credit for the original design goes to Father Menarik. His vision of the complete statue was the basis for the
sculpture’s formation and he closely supervised the design process. Once Father Menarik approved the
Design, a block of marble of adequate size needed to be specially quarried for the statue.

Biancoduro Carrara Marble, quarried at Nord Carrara in Tuscany, Italy, was selected. Another sculptor you
may have heard of patronized these quarries- his name was Michelangelo.

This marble is, without exception, the best white marble for outdoor use, as it is very compact and will
withstand the weather. To quarry a block of marble of sufficient size for this statue, a large cut had to be made
in the side of the mountain. Once the cut was made on three sides, dynamite explosives were used to force the
block of marble out of the mountain. As the quarry is high on the mountain and no road leads to it, this
tremendous block of marble had to be transported down the mountain on skis! It was lowered to the nearest
road and trucked from there to The Studios of Daprato. When it was finished, the statue was carefully packed
into a case made of fresh pine logs and loaded onto express steamship Roma for delivery to New York. In
New York, it was again loaded on a flat truck to be transported to the site at North Riverside, Illinois.

                                                                        On Mother’s Day, May 13, 1956,
Cardinal Stritch blessed the Mother of

                                           Thank You
On Sunday, March 28th, the Mater Christi Holy Name Society sponsored the first ever Easter Basket
Raffle & Split-the-Pot. The idea came about after the successful Turkey Shoot Basket Raffle this past
November. Following a wink and a nod and a nudge and a chuckle and a proposal, the 25 Easter baskets’
contents were selected.
A spiral-cut ham, smoked polish sausage, dozen eggs, PAAS egg coloring kit, rye bread and Houska
(Vesecky’s Bakery) , wine, 1lb. solid chocolate Easter bunny (Aunt Diana’s Old Fashioned Fudge), lamb
butter, Easter lamb cake (Rose’s Catering), jelly beans, Peeps, and an Easter lily flower seemed to be an
appropriate representative assortment.
Parishioners, family, and friends of Mater Christi overwhelmed us with their interest, excitement, and
generosity...oh so generous!

                                           2021
It appears that it will take 31 years for the Holy Name Society to hold the Annual Golf
Outing at Gleneagles Country Club in Lemont for the 30th time. You can only hold this group
back for so long. So, here we go...on Friday, June 11th the Mater Christi Holy Name Society
will host the Annual Golf Outing at, yes, Gleneagles County Club in Lemont. It is time to sign
up your foursome, or yourself and/or your friends.

The day will start at 7:00am with a continental breakfast and goodie bag followed by 18 holes
of carted golf (Shotgun start/Scramble format) at 8:30am. Food and drink at the Halfway
House and snacks along the way. Following golf, a hearty lunch along with awards, raffle,
and Split-the-Pot will take place. The cost is $90 per person through June 1st,
                                     $100 per person after.

Donations towards the raffle are greatly appreciated. If you, or your business/employer is
interested in enhancing the prize table, please let us know.

Also, Hole Sponsorship is available for those interested. What a great way to advertise your
business, side hustle, etc. A sign at a designated hole, appear in the Golf Outing program, and
also in the church bulletin makes up the attractive package for $75.
       Sign up…, donate…, sponsor…, questions…, comments…, all these can be answered
           by Guy Belmonte , (708) 822-9359 or Stephen Piszczor, (708) 602-1927.
