Christmas Night
Written and illustrated by Suszie Vignoles

A fox barks on the hillside, watching the fields below,
The countryside is sleeping, blanketed in snow.

Pinpricks of light from millions of stars speckle the velvet night.
Frosted leaves on the brambles are held in winter’s bite.

And the wildlife of the woodland shelter in burrow or nest.
Sleeping dormice and moles underground are taking a wintry rest.

All of nature seems to be waiting for the unfolding Christmas Story.
When the music of angels spreads over the earth,
 Telling of God’s glory

And animals watched and waited then in a lowly cattle shed.
For the birth of God’s baby son in the straw of a manger bed.

Poetry Corner A poem by ee cummings

 little tree
 by Nigel Davis
 little silent Christmas tree
 you are so little
 For adults,
you are more like a flower
 Christmas can
 mean many
things – the stress of preparing who found you in the green forest
Christmas lunch, the frenzy and were you very sorry to come away?
of present giving, the chance see I will comfort you
of eating and drinking too because you smell so sweetly
much, the family reunions,
the loneliness, the stay of
i will kiss your cool bark
the mother-in-law, whatever.
and hug you safe and tight
For not that many people, I
guess, does the real reason
 just as your mother would,
for celebrating Christmas only don’t be afraid
nowadays feature that much.
But underneath it all, don’t we look the spangles
at least respond to the sense of that sleep all the year in a dark box
wonder and excitement of little dreaming of being taken out and allowed to shine,
children at Christmas? the balls the chains red and gold the fluffy
 threads,
This peach of a poem by the
American poet E.E. Cummings put up your little arms
– a favourite poet of mine
and i’ll give them all to you to hold
– seems to me to convey
every finger shall have its ring
so much. The young child
identifies with the Christmas and there won’t be a single place dark or unhappy
tree as a living person – ripped
up from its home in the woods, then when you’re quite dressed
alone, abandoned, neglected, you’ll stand in the window for everyone to see and
unclothed. But by her adorning how they’ll stare!
the “little tree” with lights oh but you’ll be very proud
and decorations, by loving
it and cherishing it, the little
and my little sister and i will take hands
Christmas tree becomes not
just cared for but wonderful. and looking up at our beautiful tree
And so Christmas becomes we’ll dance and sing
wonderful. “Noel Noel”
