Carinda Christie Trio
A s she releases her fifth full-length album Cruel, Carinda
Christie brings her music to The ORB in Atherton on
14 September. The Carinda Christie Trio consists of Jason
Donnelly on guitar and vocals, and Mark Trimbolli on drums.
Cruel sees Christie reunite with some of the most profound
influences of her musical life—drummer Ben Hakalitz (Not
Drowning Waving, Yothu Yindi) and Giles Smith on bass, guitar
and co-production (Dragon, Eagle, John Williamson)—to
bring a big band sound to the album. “I got sick of the whole
band and covers thing, I wanted to do originals. We worked
as a trio, so there is definitely a bigger band sound on this
album – we let go a bit and let it take its own shape,” explains
Christie.
As a live performer,
Carinda Christie puts
110 per cent into her
shows – so you won't be
disappointed. Her sweet
and powerful rock-pop-
folk style and talent finds
her right at home on
all stages from festivals
and pubs to intimate
settings.
Carinda has toured extensively over the years to many festivals and has also supported
high-profile artists such as Wendy Matthews and Grace Knight, Billy Thorpe, Tina Cousins,
Pseudo Echo, Christine Anu and many more. But she still calls the Tablelands home.
She has released six albums and has some tracks on iTunes as well as Spotify.
6 What’s On & Where To Go September 2018Coffee
& craft
mixed with cake
I nspired after a trip to the UK, local business woman Emma
Pensini embarked on a new business venture incorporating
two of her loves – coffee and craft. A new concept for the
Tablelands and one of only a handful worldwide, Coffee &
Clay offers customers a place to relax and enjoy some quality
time, coffee and food, as well as painting ceramics.
Coffee & Clay is situated in the Red Sheds in Yungaburra with
other arty businesses. Emma has totally transformed the
space into a modern English farmhouse style that is totally
charming. The space also has room to accommodate her
other business Fine Fettle Gifts and Homewares – a match
made in heaven.
When Emma stumbled across a similar cafe in the UK with
her sister, she was immediately taken in and loved how the
people in the cafe were actually talking to each other as they
Emma Pensini. Photo: Steven Nowakowski
painted their ceramics, rather than playing with their phones.
This is what she wants for Coffee & Clay – a space to engage
with each other and reconnect. The location also offers a
lovely view to enjoy which is an added bonus.
The first thing that strikes you when you walk in, is the
aesthetic beauty and charm of the place. Emma has a natural
gift when it comes to decorating as is evident with her
Fine Fettle Gifts and Homewares business which has been
operating for over six years. She credits her passion for
decorating to her mother who is an accomplished sewer and
curtain maker.
The cafe not only offers great coffee, unique tea blends,
cakes, friands, slices and simple tasty homestyle food, but
also a charming creative space. For something different,
Emma makes her own almond milk to use in the cafe. Their
milk is sourced from Mungalli Creek Dairy and their meat is
from the Yungaburra Butchery with their special free-range
chicken.
The creative part of the cafe comes in where you choose
an unpainted ceramic from their selection, paint it, have it
glazed and fired, and then collect or have it posted to you.
There is no skill required which means everyone can have a
go. Customers are invited to come in and try it anytime. The
concept is perfect for parties, bridal and baby showers, and
Emma also encourages kindergartens, playgroups and other
groups to use the model as a fun fundraiser. Bookings are
required for groups.
Emma's daughters, Abbey and Milly, also work part time
with her at Coffee & Clay where she mentors and helps to
develop their business and hospitality skills. She wants to
demonstrate to them—and other women—that you can
do whatever you put your mind to and be successful. Her
dream is to provide a creative welcoming environment for all
to enjoy, which she already has. Coffee & Clay is open 7 days
Mon-Fri 7.30am to 5pm and weekends 8am to 4pm at
20 Eacham Road, Yungaburra.

with MELANIE HAVA
MAMU ABORIGINAL ARTIST
W ith a distinct modern style, local artist Melanie Hava has
a fresh style that appeals to a wide audience. Originally
from Mamu country near Millaa Millaa, Melanie draws on her
indigenous heritage to produce stunning images of reef and
rainforest. We sat down with Melanie to get an idea of where
her inspiration comes from.
When did you discover you had a flair for creative art?
When I was in Kindy – I distinctly remember my teachers all
asking me to paint something for them before the end of the reflections
year and they didn’t ask anyone else to paint for them!

with ideas, colour or composition?
I may start with an idea of what I want to create but then
most of the time the painting takes on its on identity and I
just go with it. Sometimes I get “painter’s block” and don’t
know what to paint so I go online or to a local gallery for
inspiration. I love colours and I just love the freedom of
expression with painting. I love the glimmer of gold and the
way it can change so much within a piece of work, which is
why I use it so frequently.
You have exhibited around the world, what are some of the
countries or cities where your work has been shown?
I currently have work in a gallery in Rotterdam in the
Netherlands which has been doing well. I also had work in
Enns, Austria.
Is there anything in particular that inspires you to be
creative?
I’d have to say nature inspires me the most – the changing
colours of sunsets, the deep greens and browns of a
rainforest, the blue skies and red earth, the dance and flight
of birds. I also love looking at other artist’s works on Social
Media and get inspired by their use of colour.
