The Jaguar 411 - Jaguar Nation Orientation & Welcome - Augusta University
Welcome
from Student Life
Welcome to Augusta University!

We are excited to have new students and family
members on campus! We know that the first couple of
weeks on campus can be overwhelming. We hope that
learning more about our campus resources and Jaguar
Nation helps relieve some of those anxieties!

One of the best ways to balance the academic rigor of
Augusta University is to get involved! The campus
offers a multitude of options. Some of what the Office
of Student Life and Engagement offers:
  • The Jaguar Production Crew hosts different
campus activities across Health Sciences and
Summerville. We are always looking for
    volunteers!
  • Freshman Council within the Student Government
Association is a great way for freshmen to get
involved in being the voice of the student body
and is focused on increasing the leadership
capabilities and Jaguar spirit on campus.
  • Over 150 student organizations that are student-
led! Looking for someone to play video games
with, learning more about the African culture or
even attending a student-led devotional? Check
    out our student organizations!
  • Interested in joining centuries-old organizations
with a leadership development and community
approach, check out our Greek Life organizations.

We hope that you will take a moment during
Orientation to ask someone about getting involved
on campus. Lastly, we hope all of you will join us in
August for our Weeks of Welcome featuring activities
across both campuses.

Go Jags!

The Jaguar 411 - Jaguar Nation Orientation & Welcome - Augusta University
What to expect from Jaguar Nation Orientation and Welcome!
The mission of New Student Orientation at Augusta University is to facilitate a positive transition into
the Augusta University community. By participating fully in orientation, students and their families
will have an opportunity to connect with campus resources while learning the culture of Augusta
University and Jaguar Nation. We strive for every student and family member to leave confident in
making the first steps toward a successful transition into the Augusta University community.

Parents will learn how to guide their student through the college experience, utilize resources to
enhance the educational journey, and troubleshoot challenges common during the first year of
    college.

Students will learn the skills needed to get the most out of the college experience. They will also meet
campus administrators, professors and student leaders, enabling them to build connections early in
    their journey.

Our goal is to provide an exceptional welcome to Jaguar Nation by instilling pride in Augusta
University and promoting academic and co-curricular excellence. We are excited to have you join us
for Jaguar Nation Orientation and Welcome!

#AUGOrientation Stay in touch during orientation.

We are delighted to begin this journey with you.
    Go Jags!
    With warmest regards,
    Dr. Brooks Keel
    President of Augusta University

Dear New Augusta University Students & Family Members,
Hello Jaguars! My name is LeDarius Scott and I am a senior political science major
here at Augusta University. I was born and raised in Augusta and decided to stay
home to pursue my academic ambitions. Student Government Association serves
as the voice of all students enrolled at Augusta University, actively ensuring that
the needs of all Jaguars are met.

Freshmen can get involved in SGA through Freshman Council, which is a
junior model of SGA. Freshman serving on the council will serve as the voice
for the Freshman Class. All other classifications can apply to become senators or
    executives of SGA.

My biggest piece of advice to any incoming freshman is remembering that your purpose in life is bigger than
you. In order to be great at what we do, we must act with selfless intention. If you quit when adversity hits, you
not only let down yourself, and your family, but also the world around you. Selfless intention is vital to success.

    Best regards,
    LeDarius Scott
    Student Body President

rigorous and creative core courses, unique, interdisciplinary seminars and guided undergraduate research,
scholarship and creative activity that culminates in an honors thesis. Throughout the curriculum, honors
students at Augusta University receive advising, instruction and mentoring from honors staff and faculty and
the support to present their research at state, regional and national conferences. Successful completion of
program requirements culminates in honors designation on both diploma and transcript, a seal of distinction
that assures prospective employers, graduate schools and professional schools that the student has maintained a

       Intramural Sports
The Jaguar Intramural Sports program provides an organized recreation setting for all students, faculty and staff. Students
can compete in team or individual sports without making a large time commitment. Activities include flag football,
basketball, tennis, futsal, soccer, volleyball and softball.

        Club Sports
The Club Sports program consists of teams who compete competitively with other universities or colleges, but are not
regulated by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics
(NAIA), and do not have varsity status. At Augusta University, club sports are student-run and receive little financial aid
from the school. Clubs include archery, soccer, bass fishing, cheerleading and Ultimate Frisbee.

The Student Counseling & Psychological Services is the primary mental health resource for Augusta University students. Our
services are free and confidential, and our team is comprised of psychologists, professional counselors, a psychiatrist, graduate
trainees and support staff. Our main location is on the Summerville Campus, but we also have counselors available on the
Health Sciences Campus for your convenience.
We provide assistance to students with common concerns like depression, sadness and loneliness, anxiety and stress, panic
attacks, relationship and family issues, adjustment and homesickness, traumatic experiences, eating and body image concerns,
alcohol and/or drug use, as well as many others. Students typically feel that 3-5 sessions adequately address their needs, with
some receiving less and some receiving more. We help to assist students with community referrals for longer-term counseling
and treatment.
Individual Counseling is available for students who wish to discuss a wide range of personal concerns. Your counselor
will work with you to develop a unique approach to help address your concerns and/or provide a referral, when necessary.
Initial Appointments are typically the first point of contact for students at the counseling center and are required for ongoing
counseling. To schedule an Initial Appointment, please call or stop by our main location on the Summerville Campus.
Crisis Services are available for students who are experiencing life-threatening concerns, such as thoughts of harm toward
self or others, as well as those who recently experienced a traumatic event. Counselors are available to meet with clients in
crisis. No appointment is necessary; simply call or walk into either campus location during business hours, Monday through
Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For after-hours response, please either call 911, go to your nearest emergency room, or call the 24-
hour Georgia Crisis & Access Line at 1-800-715-4225.
Couples and Group Counseling is available as well. Group topics vary by semester.
Consultation Services are available for any member of our community who is concerned about the welfare of another.
Outreach Programming is available on both campuses. Topics vary each semester.

     Leadership Programs
The Jaguar Leaders Program is designed to:
          • Help student leaders find their voice and practice putting their values into action
          • Create an environment where student leaders learn how to manage conflict (personally and in organizations)
          • Increase the involvement of student groups on campus through leadership development

Through this workshop style program, we will follow the Student Leadership Challenge. Students will participate in
activities that lead to greater understanding of leadership, and participate in various campus events.

The time commitment for the Jaguar Leaders Program is roughly 4-5hrs/month to include workshop learning, real life
practice of the workshop topic on their own time, and occasionally attending the Jaguar Leaders Luncheon series.

The Multicultural Student Engagement Program
Enhances a supportive and inclusive campus environment across the boundaries of culture, identity, and discipline. The
program invites collaboration to create a community of inclusive learners where members build bridges of understanding
across boundaries of race, gender, culture, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation, ability, religion, nationality and

diversity programs, facilitating heritage month celebrations, and by creating experiences where our community has
dialogue on issues and concerns related to social justice.

• Set realistic expectations for your first-year student regarding academics, financial responsibility and social involvement.
• Be an empathetic listener. Open and honest lines of communication lead to successful relationships between you and
  your student(s).
• Help your student to develop a realistic budget. Many students do not know how to successfully manage money. This is
the time to learn how to be financially responsible before stepping out completely on their own.
• Remind students to take care of themselves by eating regularly, exercising and taking time to rest. Continuously refer
your student to on-campus resources, including Student Health Services and the Counseling Center for ways to handle
  end-of-the-semester stress.
• Continue to share care and concern for your student through creative means such as writing them a letter letting them
