A Word from the Rabbi
Dear Friends,
The High Holidays is the season of the year where we all come together to pray and visit with
one another and catch up on how life has been for us during this past year. We also wish each
other a “L’shana Tova” for the next year. It is also the time that we look within and promise
God to be better people and ask God’s help in helping to pursue our personal goals.
To assist you with this process, I am going to be speaking at length during Rosh Hashana and
Yom Kippur about some personal goals that are close to my heart. On the first day of Rosh
Hashana, the title of my sermon is “Get down and get happy.” On the second morning of Rosh
Hashana, I will ask “Why do we pray?” On Kol Nidre, the title of the sermon is “What do we
mean when we say we’re sorry.” At Yizkor time the next day, I will talk about “When death is
unexpected.”
This year we are using the Pervin Chapel which will be different for all of us. Our choir is back.
Rich is going to sound the shofar. Beth will teach about the Book of Jonah on Yom Kippur
afternoon. Sukkot follows on the heels of Yom Kippur. We hope to see you to wave the lulav
and rest with joy under the cover of our Sukkah. Together with Tree of Life, we plan to unfurl
the Torah on Simchat Torah evening. Thanks in advance to everyone who is volunteering to
make Tishrei 5779 the most meaningful month possible!
Lshana Tova v’Gemar Hatimah Tovah!

Presidents’ Message
One year ago this month we undertook a new beginning. We closed one door, negotiating the
sale of our long time home on Beechwood Blvd; and opened a new door, negotiating an
extended lease at our new home in the Tree of Life building on Wilkins Avenue. We
successfully met all the challenges that came with a complex move.
As the year wore on, we became more and more comfortable with our new home. Our new
landlords have been quick to address problems: the furnace broke in the winter, the air
conditioning pump in the summer, and water leaked in through two different walls. Not having
to worry about the physical plant – other than to point out the issues – has taken a tremendous
load off the Congregational budget.
As always, there are unfinished issues. We are waiting on approval from the City to install our
sign on the outside of the building; and the removal of a TOLOLS memorial in the breakfast area
outside our sanctuary for our Bulletin Board. We are still working on designing a building
directory sign in the main lobby.
From the beginning, Tree of Life*Or L’Simcha has been gracious and accommodating. Their new
President, Dr. Samuel Schachner, has extended an invitation to both us and Dor Hadash to
attend their monthly Board meetings, starting in August, to ensure that there is open
communication among the three congregations.
As elsewhere mentioned in this newsletter, cemetery visitation is on two Sundays, September
2nd and 16th. We hope to have new section signage and a map installed prior to the 16 th. We
welcome your visit to see these changes.
Finally, please remember: we will celebrate Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur upstairs in the
Pervin Chapel.
May this New Year be filled with health and happiness, and sweet moments for you and your
family. L’Shanah Tovah!

      Featuring the Afro Semitic Experience
Co-founded by African-American jazz
pianist Warren Byrd, and Jewish-
American jazz bassist David Chevan in
1998, The Afro-Semitic Experience is a
band that combines an eclectic array of
styles, sophisticated musicianship, good
songwriting, deep grooves, and years of
friendship with a simple message: Unity in
the Community.
Their music has been heard around the
United States—the group has performed at
festivals, in churches, synagogues, colleges,
and wherever people come together to
share their love and respect for
community. Their performances are
celebrations of community and culture that
invariably get audiences up and dancing.

With their unique instrumentation, solid grooves, highly accessible world music mix, and
their ability to get an audience on its feet, The Afro-Semitic Experience is redefining the
jazz concert. This is a band beyond category—their music is an intricate tapestry of
spiritual, world-beat, funk, jazz, cantorial, gospel, salsa, swing . . . soul-driven music. Their
concerts are celebrations where they play great music, tell stories, and offer a positive and
meaningful message.
