NEWTON NEWS Term 2: Issue 6 Date: 14 may 2021 From the Headmaster’s Desk... For more than a year, we have been contending with the challenge of living in a world that is afflicted by Covid. On the positive side, it is fair to say that medical scientists have learned a tremendous amount and are presently far better equipped to deal with the effects of Covid. I remember clearly the emotions of March/April 2020, when we were in lockdown and did not know how to protect ourselves as we now do. At the time, there was no vaccina- tion available and scientists were working frantically to invent and produce a vaccination. Now we find a choice of three or four vaccinations, all of which make an enormous differ- ence to our safety and our health. Discovery Health has already secured enough vaccina- tions for all their medical aid members, and from the 17th of May 2021, are beginning with the roll out. The government is already rolling out vaccines to at-risk people. On the negative side, we are approaching the third wave of Covid infections in South Africa. Until people are vaccinated, they are at risk of being infected with Covid and some of those infected will develop medical complications that can affect their lives for months, or even years. At this critical stage, until you have been vaccinated, take utmost care to avoid so- cialising in a context where you can be infected. Guard your children from these risks, as when children become infected, they are required to quarantine for between 10 and 14 days and lose ground in their education, because online learning is NOT as good as face-to-face teaching. Newton House will do its utmost to protect our teaching staff, support staff and pupils from the risk of contracting Covid.

In English, the Grade Fours presented pre-
pared speeches about their favourite ocean
creatures. We were treated to a variety of
different species from starfish, sea anemo-
ne, blue dragon slugs, orcas, octopus to
blue whales, dolphins, stingrays and so
many more. Their speech skills have im-
proved and developed tremendously and
they delivered speeches of a high quality.
Well done, Grade Fours! You made your
English teachers exceptionally proud.

Autumn: The season that teaches us that
change can be beautiful.
Our Grade R class had the most fabulous time
learning about Autumn. They had ample oppor-
tunities to explore and experience the beautiful
changing colours and textures in nature. They
thoroughly enjoyed the story ‘Don’t hog the
hedge’, met Hattie the hedgehog and learnt
about different types of animals that hibernate,
as well as the value of kindness and shar-
ing. They then got the chance to create their very
own hibernating hedgehogs using paper plates
and salt dough. What FUN!
GRADE 5 ENGLISH
Ava van Wyk wrote and presented an excellent prepared speech. Well done Ava!
‘Good morning everybody! Today I am going to tell you all what I could have been doing instead of prepar-
ing this speech. Currently, I am sitting in my room and my dad is all red faced and shouting at me to do my
speech! But instead of listening to him, I put back on my headphones and carry on watching Friends on my
laptop. I would rather poke out my eyes than be sitting here preparing this speech. A visit to the dentist
would probably be more fun! I'd offer to read a book or tidy my room if I thought t would get me out of doing
my speech. But instead the old man stans here, red face and shouty. I'd even offer to play with my sister or
unpack the dishwasher instead of sitting here trying to prepare my speech. Heck, I'd even resort to calling
my Dad - DADDY - if I thought he'd let me off the hook and I wouldn't have to be sitting here preparing my
speech. Weekends are for chilling! I wish I had started preparing my speech earlier, then I wouldn't be sit-
ting here thinking about the things I'd rather do instead of preparing my speech!’

The Grade Threes had such fun learning
about 3D shapes this past week. They
engaged with enthusiasm and construct-
ed their very own 3D shapes, using jelly
tots, mini marshmallows and tooth-
picks. The outcome was amazing! They
applied their knowledge with insight and
understanding, making use of their re-
sources successfully. The best part was
probably being able to eat the mini mas-
terpieces!
NETBALL
On Thursday, 13 May, we played our second match against
Northriding College. What an exciting afternoon for our netball

girls! What a wonderful afternoon.

On the 12th of May, Newton House participated in a soccer match against Reddford House, Northcliff. Our
players showcased great game skills and engaged themselves wholeheartedly throughout the matches.
Although we lost some games, the overall teams’ style of play, spirit and involvement within their respective
matches was admirable. It was especially encouraging for the players to see that their efforts invested dur-
ing training were being put to good use and paid off.
