A Virtual Fundraising Event with
ROOTS Young Adult Shelter
ROOTS YOUNG ADULT SHELTER
Since 1999, ROOTS Young Adult Shelter has helped individuals ages 18-25
experiencing homelessness find shelter, safety, and a source of compassion.
We provide a number of resources, including: Dinner, breakfast, laundry,
showers, hygiene supplies, clothing, and case management. ROOTS is a
low-barrier shelter and accepts guests for who they are and the experiences
that brought them to us. We aim to create a safe space for the diverse identities
of our guests that are disproportionately represented by people of color, the
LGBTQIA+ community and individuals transitioning out of the foster care
system. For 45 young adults each evening, we offer a safe place to sleep, along
with the support needed to find a sustainable home.
FRIDAY FEAST
Friday Feast is an all-ages meal provided by ROOTS every Friday that is open
to anyone in the community who would like to attend. Friday Feast has served
well over 100,000 meals. From its inception, it is unique in that it aims to
provide a restaurant quality meal to people experiencing homelessness in
Seattle with respect that acknowledges every person’s autonomy and dignity.
Everyone is welcome. Now as in the beginning, Friday Feast patrons often play
integral roles in the production and execution of every meal. It still
operates almost entirely on donated materials and volunteer labor.
PLANTING OUR ROOTS When we last met up at Rise Up 2019, ROOTS Young Adult Shelter was on the precipice of change; after securing a new location for our shelter and with our twentieth year as an organization behind us, we looked towards 2020 with hope, determination, and a large mortgage payment. Like the world around us, we could not predict how different life would be in a few short months. As the Covid-19 global health crisis swept through our community here in Seattle, across the nation, and around the world, ROOTS stayed firmly planted and continued to operate through the uncertainty. With the support of our staff, volunteers, and vigilant ROOTS community, our shelter remained open and available to young adults ages 18-25 experiencing homelessness. Everyone at ROOTS joined together and pulled their own weight and more to support our organization and its guests. Staff have worked overtime to fill gaps, volunteers have come each morning and evening to sanitize every surface of our space, and the guests themselves have demonstrated flexibility and resilience dur- ing this trying time. It has truly been a team effort, and through the power and persistence of our community, we met every challenge set in front of us. So in the midst of a pandemic with a constantly evolving environment and needs, and many questions surrounding our future, ROOTS is… well, still here and pushing forward. As we transition into phase 1 of our move, we leave the place we’ve called home for the last 20 years. On a mission to Plant our Roots in a permanent home located within the University of Washington’s Greek Row, we join a community that has supported the growth of young adults for over a century. With plans to move into our new home by the end of the year, renovations aimed at shaping our future will continue as we grow strategically over the next few years. The road since Rise Up 2019 has been winding, bumpy, and most of the time, done without a map. That means that at Rise Up 2020, we have more to share with you than ever before, with an even greater need for your support. Last year we aimed to throw an event unlike any Rise Up before; and we did! At the Rise Up 2019 Gala, we raised a record breaking $450,000 to support our operational costs, and our upcoming move. For Rise Up 2020, we intend to do the same; this year’s Rise Up event is sure to be unlike any before it—and there’s a few reasons why.
WHAT TO EXPECT FOR RISE UP 2020 Rise Up 2020, Planting our Roots, will be a completely online event. The evening of October 13th, 2020, we’re asking you to join us for a critical, yet fun and concise, fundraising event. There will be opportunities to participate in real-time, watch guest speakers, performances, and join in and raise your paddle (done from your cell phone), all led by our fabulous emcee Sasha Cousineau. The key difference? You’ll be participating from the comfort of your own home! By going digital, we not only ensure the safety of our supporters, but also benefit by bringing the Rise Up experience to more attendees than ever possible. Without the limitations of a physical space, we’re able to share this experience with a greater audience; anyone with an internet connection can tune in to make this the largest Rise Up we’ve ever had! For you sponsors, that means that your logo and brand recognition on all digital materials will be seen by more sets of eyes than any event we’ve had in the past, and will continue to live on digitally way beyond this moment. In the era of endless Zoom conferences, we know an online event can be taxing. However, we’re ROOTS! As a quirky, honest, and compassionate crew of individuals committed to the work we do, our online program is sure to be chock -full of humor, real stories, and genuine content. As a community who cares, we hope that Rise Up 2020 is not just a successful fundraiser for ROOTS, but a meaningful way for us all to connect in a way that is safe for all. We miss seeing you! Because the format of our fundraiser has changed, our digital and printed materials for sponsorship

TICKETS AND VIP EVENTS
Tickets for this year’s event are $50, and will be waived for any sponsorship participants and guests
under their sponsorship package benefits. Each registered ticket will go toward ensuring day-of
printed and participatory materials are delivered to attendees. Attendees who do not purchase tickets
or register after the deadline will not receive day-of printed or participatory materials. VIP
tickets and special VIP events are to be announced, but should not be expected for Rise Up 2020 due
