Westaire Cal-Ability Class
Sue and Caroline Smith from Westaire Calisthenics Club have commenced their Recrea onal Class for all abili es.
Following a endance at a spor ng expo for children with special
needs last year and with assistance from the CVI Club Grants
Program, they decided to re start a Recrea onal Class a er a six year
break.
Through the funding received Caroline and Sue were able to produce
flyers to promote the class and were also given a variety of different
equipment to incorporate into the program each week.
Westaire promoted their new class late last year at several special
schools and through the Moonee Valley City Council. There are
currently 7 children par cipa ng with more recent inquiries
received.
Sue and Caroline both agree that it has been an extremely exci ng
me to see the parents and pupils engage in the ac vi es that they
are introducing into their class. The ac vi es are focused around
fine and gross motor skill development and movement to music.
Recrea onal Calisthenics is becoming more and more popular within
clubs as it promotes physical ac vity in a fun and stress free
environment. We encourage more clubs to incorporate recrea onal
classes into their metable by contac ng the office to receive further
informa on and guidance. Phone 9562 6011 or email Erica at

We had our Tinies class on the Monday night, our
first night back, and were expec ng a few new
girls to arrive, so had arranged extra helpers, but
the amount of girls that had shown up was
unbelievable. Our hall isn’t that big and with 34
girls arriving to give us a go, as well as their
parents and siblings, the place was chao c. On
the Wednesday, we held our Sub‐juniors class.
A er last year only having 4 girls and not being
able to compete, we were excited at the prospect
of new girls trying out. With only 3 of the 4
returning and only two Tinies going up, we hoped
we would be at least able to have a team to
compete. We were pleasantly surprised to have a total of 16 girls trying our class. On the 2nd week we had the
same amount of girls, although some were gone and some were new. This led us to quickly arrange to put the
Tinies into two different teams of what were now 15 girls each.

As of the comple on of week 4, we now have 2 teams of 13 Tinies, 14 Sub Juniors, 8 Juniors, 8 Inters and 14
Seniors. A total of 70 girls, an increase of 24 par cipants. To say that ‘Come’n’Try” was a success for our club
would be a huge understatement. We look forward to next year’s February, to keep our club growing, become
successful both on stage and with our friendships.
