Editorial

 Dear readers,

in this issue of Asian PU Digest we again present you a good mix of technical articles, reports on upcoming and
past events, and of course the current news and developments of the industry.

We have picked two interesting technical articles that we believe you will find particularly interesting:

The first article by Kohlstrung, Engels and Schlingloff, Henkel, deals with multi-substrate polyurethane adhesives
and bonding technologies especially for automotive lightweight designs. In today’s lightweight car body construction
many different materials with different properties, such as stiffness, strength and thermal elongation need to be
joined and this article explains how these challenges can be overcome with the aid of a new class of polyurethane
     adhesive.

The second technical article by Tang, Taylor and Wiggins, Albermarle Corporation, discusses a recently modified
curative for the polyurethane cast elastomer industry. The presented liquid aromatic diamine is a multipurpose, low
     odour and low toxicity curative.

Furthermore, the current issue reports also on recent successful trade shows and events, such as the CIFM / interzum
Guangzhou, and Chinaplas, that took place in Shanghai and closed with a record number of attendees.

     Enjoy reading!

The German machine and plant manufacturer Hennecke recently announced that its participation in the trade
show JEC World 2018 was very successful. The company presented, e.g., a new wide shot dispenser for the wet
shot process, which has been optimised with regard to ease of maintenance and offers new technical functions.
Hennecke said as a result it was awarded a contract for the supply of a combined production plant for wet shot
and HP-RTM applications by the Chinese company PGTEX.

Sustainable castor bean production
Arkema and partners help over 1,000 Indian farmers

Leading chemical companies helped 1,019 Indian farmers on their way to create a framework for sustainable
castor bean production. Arkema, BASF, Jayant Agro-Organics (a producer of castor oil-based chemicals in India),
and Solidaridad (an international civil society organization) came together for Project ‘Pragati’ (Hindi word for
progress). With this first-of-its-kind initiative globally, the companies are developing a sustainable castor frame-
work titled ‘SuCCESS’ (Sustainable Castor Caring for Environmental & Social Standards).

A baseline survey of more than 1,000 castor farmers was con-

ducted in 2016 on issues relating to their productivity, social
impact, environment, health and safety. Based on the initial find-
ings, Project Pragati was launched in May 2016 in Gujarat, India,
as this region produces nearly 70 % of the world’s supply of cas-
tor beans.

The project aims to address these issues with the development of
a sustainability framework designed to evaluate the social, econom-
ic, agronomic, and environmental performance of the Indian castor
farmers.

Key outcomes of the project to date:
• A yield improvement of 55 % vs. the 2016 baseline
• Safety kits and waste storage drums distributed to all 2,700 par- Castor oil, derived from the seeds of castor plants, is used by Arkema to synthesise

Technology pioneers – 50 years of
          Reaction Process Machinery at KraussMaffei
Numerous technological milestones characterise the development

This year, KraussMaffei’s Reaction Process Machinery (RPM) celebrates not only the 180th anniversary of Krauss-
Maffei as a whole but also its own jubilee. In 1968 – exactly 50 years ago – its first specialised clamping unit
with two rotation axes for processing polyurethane was introduced to the market. This launch triggered a de-
velopment resulting in a wide variety of products and processes thanks to which it has been possible to further
improve the performance capacity of PU components and other matrix systems.

Milestones in development in the portfolio. The first mould carriers (“Moon-Swing”) were intro-

“We look back with pride on 50 years of reaction process machinery. With the development of the first self-cleaning mixing head in 1970,

The CIFM / interzum guangzhou 2018 – one of Asia’s most influential furniture production, woodworking ma-

150,000 m2, with a total of 1,459 exhibitors, including 340 companies from abroad. According to the organ-
isers, Koelnmesse and China Foreign Trade Centre (Group), the four-day event attracted participation from a total
of 132 countries and regions, and registered a record of 89,858 visitors – an increase of about 7.8 % over the
previous year. The number of buyers from mature markets such as Malaysia and South Korea as well as emerg-
