The island of Chaillac-sur-Vienne
With its 46 acres, the Chaillac island (also known as Navière island,
after its former owners) is the largest on the Vienne and the only
important island in Limousin. Located a few minutes’ drive from
the town centre in the direction of Angoulême, the Limousin sec-
tion of the river ends here and you can see the influence of the
Massif Central in the flora which has been carried here from the
Limousin plateau.

20Remembrance Centre in Oradour-sur-Glane
From the expansion of nazism in Europe to the court case in Bor-
deaux, five exhibition areas lead us to understand why the peaceful
village of Oradour sur Glane, in Haute-Vienne, was the target of bar-
baric nazism. Archives, testimonies, stories and films help to explain
the events that made Oradour a martyr village, which is, today, a place
of remembrance.
Now viewed as a cultural facility whose purpose is to welcome and
inform visitors to the martyr village, classified as an "Historic Monu-
ment", the Centre de la Mémoire (Remembrance Centre) is a cultural
facility considered as "interpretive". This means there are no collec-
tions or objects on show, instead visitors can walk around the village.

22The Haute-Vienne Contemporary Art Museum in Rochechouart Castle
The museum was opened in 1985 by the Haute-Vienne county council. It presents an impor-
tant collection of contemporary art ranging from the 1960s to the present day, and regularly
organises exhibitions of internationally renowned artists.
The Raoul Hausmann foundation: The museum possesses the largest European collection
of this major XXth century artist’s work. Raoul Hausmann founded the Berlin Dada movement
and died in Limoges in 1971. A pioneer of collage and sound poetry, he created many forms of
art ranging from painting to music, including sketches, collages, photography, writing and the
performing arts.
An artistic and historic heritage: Contemporary creations blend with historical spaces
within the castle, in particular the towers and the top floor which boasts a magnificent
wooden structure dating back to the XVIth century and which is regularly used for exhibitions.
The castle is famous for its collection of XVIth century frescoes. In July and August, feel free to be creative!
