Lighting the way to safe work
Life requires light
Light is the thing that we see first when we are born into this world.
Lighting creates atmosphere and influences our feelings. Good lighting
brings safety and provides visibility for our work.
At the end of March 2009, almost 4,000 cities worldwide switched off lights
for an hour, along with the World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour campaign. In spite
of this, lights cannot be dimmed for work. Likewise, light is an essential element
in art and colors. Impressionists, or painters of light, were the revolutionaries of
art while rejecting traditional rules and techniques in their paintings.
For almost twenty years, Centaurea has endeavored to innovate portable work
lights and integrate the latest technical solutions in them. Portable lights designed
for the defense industry are the foundation of our CentaurSlam® product family. This
background of demanding customers and challenging conditions ensures that our
products are durable and reliable in most operational environments.
Due to the tightening safety-at-work regulations and the
enforcement of the ATEX directive, Centaurea has committed
to generating safe lighting solutions particularly for potentially
hazardous workplaces. Our portfolio includes dozens of basic
products, which can all be tailored to various individual customer
specifications.

How to improve work safety in hazardous areas?
1. SELECT EQUIPMENT CLEARLY CERTIFIED AS PORTABLE
• Portable Ex-equipment is designed for
temporary use in hazardous area
• ATEX-certificate of such unit should
clearly state word “Portable”
• Fixed Ex-lights and Ex-hand lamps do not
meet the same criteria as portable Ex-lights
All the CentaurSlam®-units are designed and
certified for portable use
2. ONE EQUIPMENT CERTIFICATE FOR ONE PRODUCT
• One complete certificate for
whole unit is required
• Standard: IEC/EN 60079-0 part 13
• Assembling a unit of separate

3. SECURE EQUIPOTENTIAL BONDING IN EX-AREAS

Steps for safe choosing
1. INTENDED PURPOSE OF EQUIPMENT
• In case of portable use of equipment,
certificate should mention portable use as
description of equipment.

• If not mentioned, it is likely the unit is not
tested and accepted for portable use.

have different requirements
Make sure that the equipment is suitable for the intended use
2. CLASSIFICATION OF EX-AREA
• Compare the equipment certificate
with the area classification.
• Examples:.
° Equipment category 2 = Zone 1 and 2
° EPL marking Gb = Zone 1 and 2
Make sure that the equipment CATEGORY is
suitable for the particular Ex-area classification
3. EXPLOSION GROUP OF SUBSTANCES
• Compare the equipment certification to the explosion group of
substance creating the danger of explosion.
• Examples:.
° Hydrogen Explosion group IIC
° Ethylene Explosion group IIB
° Naphtha Explosion group IIA
Make sure that the equipment EXPLOSION GROUP
is suitable for the particular Ex-area classification43
4. TEMPERATURE RATING OF EQUIPMENT
• Compare the equipment certification to the
highest acceptable temperatures of substance
creating the danger of explosion.
• Examples:.
° Hydrogen Ignition temp 560 °C = T1
° Ethylene Ignition temp 425 °C = T2
° Naphtha Ignition temp 290 °C = T3
Make sure that the equipment
HIGHEST TEMPERATURE POINT is suitable for
the particular Ex-area classification
5. AMBIENT TEMPERATURE
• Notice the ambient temperature of the
application of use.
• Notice also other criteria e.g. heavy mechanical
stress and effect of chemicals
Ex-certificate is valid between temperatures of
-20° C to + 40° C if not otherwise mentioned
in the certificate
