Foreword
This recreational booklet began life as an idea amongst the staff of
the Mental Health Services of the Otago District Health Board.
People with experience of mental illness often found discovering
recreation of quality and meaning on a limited budget difficult.
Signpost, a consumer run initiative that works with people
experiencing mental health issues by way of advocacy, information,
and community liaison work, took up the task of compiling this
resource to be used as a stimulus to finding that recreation.
While the confines of finding things for under five dollars was not
easy, all involved in the project knew that with imagination and an
appreciation of the free things life offers, quality experiences are
possible.
Now in its seventh edition copies may be found lying on coffee
tables, in bookcases and drawers of people from all walks of life and
it is still in demand. Thanks to Bendigo Trust, Community Trust of
Otago and Dunedin Casino Charitable Trust for support in
recognition of the project's worth to the wider community.
For additional copies, contact Otago Mental Health Support Trust

To all who choose to use our booklet, our best wishes in finding
that something enjoyable to do without spending much.

Life's a Beach

short hop away. Call Dunedin’s i-SITE visitor centre on 477 3300 for help

together? It would only coast a few dollars each.

Central Dunedin
The centre of the city is focused on The Octa-
gon, an eight-sided 'plaza' with a central carriage-
way. This is surrounded by another, larger octagonal
                            street called Moray Place.

                      The main retail area stretches
                    north up George Street toward
Dunedin North, and to a lesser extent
south along Princes Street and east along
                                Lower Stuart Street.

At the end of Lower Stuart Street,
400 metres from the Octagon, lies
Anzac Square (actually a triangular area
of public gardens) and Dunedin Railway
Station, with an industrial area and the
                                     harbour beyond.

Activity: Diy Artwork
Why not use what you have in your house to create some art?
All you need are:
                2 egg
                 cartons
                Cardboard
                Red paint
                Scissors
                Glue
Step One: Cut out the egg
‘nests’ and glue them on the
cardboard in a heart shape
Step Two: When the glue is dry, you can now paint the ‘egg-
nests’, and the backing red.
Step Three: Once the paint is dry, you can finish off your
artwork by cutting out a cardboard frame to complete your
picture.
Why not gift your finished artwork to a friend, family member
or keep it for your own wall. This great piece of artwork is an
easy way to add some colour to a room and to someone’s day.
This also helps to do your bit for the environment, Reuse,
Recycle and Reduce. Making new products requires a lot of
materials and energy, so by reusing material helps to save
energy as well as preventing pollution and saving money.

North Dunedin
North East Valley boast several parks and
gardens, starting at “The Gardens” (Dunedin
Botanic Gardens), Woodhaugh Garden, Chingford
Park, Forrester Park and Bethunes Gully.

                Much of Dunedin's water comes
from reservoirs in the upper reaches
of the Leith Valley. These include Ross
Creek Reservoir, the oldest reservoir still in
use in New Zealand and Sullivans Dam.

               Numerous popular walking tracks
                 traverse the bush-clad reserve
                      and around the reservoir.
Activity: How to Make Your Own Kite!
What you'll need:
      1 sheet of 8 1/2-by-11-inch  Plastic surveyor's tape in
brightly coloured paper a bright colour (available
      Ruler at hardware stores)
      Pencil  Hole punch
 3/4-inch masking or clear  10 feet of string (or
tape more, if flying clear of
      Wire snips hazards)
 Thin bamboo skewer  Small piece of cardboard
         (like used for kebabs)

          1 2 3 4
Fold the sheet of paper in half widthwise. Using the ruler, measure and
draw a diagonal line, as indicated in picture 1.
Place the ruler against the line and crease the paper along it, fold back the
top layer of paper and tape along the fold line.
Using wire snips, trim the bamboo skewer to 8 inches in length. Use the
skewer as a brace across the top back of the kite, tape it firmly.
Cut a 6-foot tail from the surveyor's tape. Tape it to the rear edge of the
kite. Next, flip the kite over and fold the flap (for the string) back and
forth until it stands straight up.
Fold a small piece of tape over the edge of the flap about 3 inches from
the top. Punch a hole through the tape 1/4 inch in from the folded edge.
Tie one end of the string through the hole.
To make a string winder, tie the other end of the string around the middle
of the cardboard and tape it down.
Wind on the rest of the string, and Courtesy of Family Fun Magazine
you're ready to fly!

Is there history under your doorstep?
One Dunedinite investigated the suburb of Vauxhall and discovered
an interesting story.
In the early years of Dunedin the cliff head overlooking Andersons
Bay Inlet was the site of a colourful and notorious recreation area,
the Vauxhall Gardens. Opened at the height of the Central Otago
Gold Rush in 1862 and named for the gardens at Vauxhall in
London, the gardens were the brainchild of wealthy local Henry
Farley, who spent a then-astonishing £10,000 on their construction.
The 23-acre (9.3 ha) site included a gymnasium, bandstands, dancing
areas, and a funicular railway.
A menagerie contained
koalas, kangaroos, vultures
and Tasmanian devils. The
gardens were highly popular,
0..but also became known for
the rowdiness and
drunkenness of the parties,
and for prostitution. The
gardens did not survive the
end of the gold rush and were
closed in 1870. No trace
remains of them today. The
land was subdivided and
Vauxhall is now a quiet
residential suburb.

West Dunedin
From humble beginnings on nine holes in a pas-
ture, only "half an hour’s stroll from the Central Post Of-
fice". Balmacewan Golf Club was established in 1871
and is one of the oldest golf clubs in
                             the Southern Hemisphere

                                A little bit of history
Close to the northern edge of the An-
dersons Bay Inlet is a large memorial
stone to the Taranaki Māori prisoners
of the New Zealand Land Wars who
were transported south to Dunedin, many
of whom constructed the causeway across
the head of the inlet and much of Dunedin's
                      foreshore roads as forced labour.
A branch railway ran along Portobello Road
in this area from the 1870s until 1912.

Activity: Playdough – a classic childhood favourite!
Basic ingredient ratios:
      2 Cups flour
      2 Cups warm water
      1 Cup salt
      2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
 1 Tablespoon cream of tartar (optional for improved elasticity)
      Food colouring
Mix all the ingredients together, and stir over low heat. The dough
will begin to thicken until it resembles mashed potatoes.
When the dough pulls away from the sides and clumps in the
centre, remove the pan from heat and allow the dough to cool
enough to handle. If your playdough is still sticky, you simply need to
cook it longer!
Turn the dough out onto a clean bench and knead vigorously until it
becomes silky-smooth. Divide the dough into balls for colouring.
Drop some food colouring in. Fold the dough over, working the
food colour through the playdough. You could use gloves to keep
your hands clean. Work the dye through, adding more as necessary
to achieve your chosen colour.
Now you can play! It's entirely edible, if a bit salty, so it's kid-safe.
You can store it in an air-tight container, and keep it for next time.
For something a little bit extra, experiment with adding scented oils
into the playdough.
