PAGE 3 41st Annual Conference & Exhibition Refresh, Recharge, Reimagine the Future of Food It is with great joy and excitement that we provide the details of RFA’s first in-person event since the start of the pandemic: our 41st Annual Conference & Exhibition in Amelia Island, Florida! Please be assured your health and safety are our first priority; we will be following all protocols and guidance regarding COVID-19 from the CDC and WHO. To successfully position your company in today’s marketplace, it is imperative to stay ahead of current market trends, food safety regulations and technical issues. Attend our reunion event to “Refresh, Recharge, Reimagine the Future of Food!” The RFA’s 2022 Conference features a dynamic cast of speakers. A few session highlights include Keynote speaker John Foley, former lead solo Photo: Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island pilot of the Blue Angels, who will share an inspiring presentation entitled “The High-Performance Zone”. Patrick Noone, Executive Vice President at Technomic, will provide actionable industry data and trend forecasts for refrigerated foods; our Technical Director, Martin Mitchell, will get us up-to-date on everything we need to know regarding food safety and regulatory issues; and Rick Gessler of Delkor Systems will deliver a great overview of the use of automation in our industry. We will also learn from Dr. Pam Dalton about the research on taste and smell being done by Monell Institute; and we will enjoy a great overview of Plastics by Dr. Eva Almenar of Michigan State University. Another highlight of the 2022 Conference is the Exhibit Hall, with key suppliers showcasing the latest offerings in ingredients, equipment, packaging and services for the refrigerated foods industry. The Conference will, once again, include the popular One-on-One CEO Sessions, which allow key decision makers of RFA Manufacturer and Associate members to meet face-to-face and discuss potential business opportunities. Ample social events will be featured at this year’s Conference as well, including the annual golf tournament and closing dinner with entertainment and our live auction. The Ritz-Carlton Resort will serve as our host hotel throughout the event. At the Ritz, guests can indulge in fun activities and relaxing amenities, from strolling or biking along the beach to relaxing in one of the shimmering indoor or outdoor pools. You will want to take advantage of everything that this year’s conference has to offer. We look forward to seeing you February 20 - 23, 2022, in Amelia Island, Florida! PAGE 8 Featured Presentations WHAT DOES THE NOSE KNOW? LESSONS FROM COVID-19 Pamela Dalton, PhD MPH Monell Institute Our sense of smell guides our evaluation and appreciation of our world. Beginning even before birth, the human olfactory system is capable of detecting and responding to odor stimuli and storing olfactory memories. The ability to detect danger (i.e., spoiled food, fires and gas leaks), enjoy foods and beverages and bond with children and partners all depends on having an intact olfactory system. Prior to 2020, reports of complete smell loss were relatively rare, affecting only 1-3% of the population. However, loss of the ability to smell became the cardinal and possibly the earliest symptom of COVID-19 infection, affecting millions of individuals world-wide. Unfortunately, for approximately 10% of those individuals, the smell loss associated with the virus onset has persisted beyond 6 months. While this represents a distressing outcome of the long-term impact of the virus, the sheer number of cases has spurred an enormous level of research and research funding into treatments for smell loss. Our presenter is Pamela Dalton, Ph.D., MPH, Principal Investigatory Member at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia. Dr. Dalton received her PhD from New York University and her Masters degree in Public Health from Drexel University. Her research program explores the human response to odors and irritants, incorporating both sensory and cognitive experimental approaches. In this talk Dr. Dalton will describe how our ability to smell guides our physical and emotional life, and will guide us in a demonstration of the importance of the ability to smell to the appreciation of food flavor. PLASTICS 101 Eva Almenar, Ph.D Michigan State University Plastic packaging is widely used by the food industry because it offers advantages compared to its counterparts, such as glass packaging and metal packaging. One of these advantages is the many different plastics available in the marketplace. Lately, the environmental footprint of plastics is starting to play a key role in plastic selection for food packaging. Another advantage is that plastics can be easily converted into both rigid formats (e.g., trays) and flexible formats (e.g., pouches). This is because of the many well established processing technologies (e.g., thermoforming, blown film extrusion) that allow for great design flexibility. This talk will focus on the basics of plastic packaging including the chemical structure, properties, conversion, and applications (e.g., refrigeration, freezing, high pressure processing) of main plastics commonly used to package food. Dr. Eva Almenar is a professor at the School of Packaging, Michigan State University, with over 15 years of experience in developing and validating novel packaging in order to prolong the shelf life of food. Dr. Almenar has co-authored a variety of publications; some of this work has been highlighted in media and disseminated through invited talks all over the world.
PAGE 9 Featured Presentations ROBOTS AS A SUPPLEMENT TO YOUR WORKFORCE Rick Gessler Vice President of Engineering, Delkor Systems Advancements in robotics and automation are enabling producers to automate their processes with a high degree of flexibility. This flexibility is enabling investment in automation where it was previously cost-prohibitive or complex. This presentation will deliver practical examples of how to implement robots in your operation, and demonstrate how a single packaging line can take the place of what was previously multiple lines. You will learn how modular scalable robotic systems can grow with your operation over time, enabling entry into the world of automation at affordable price points without capping future speeds or capabilities. Rick Gessler will be guiding us through the possibilities and uses of robotics in food processing plants during his presentation at the RFA Conference. Rick is Vice President of Engineering at Delkor Systems, a leading U.S. manufacturer of advanced robotic packaging systems. In his role at Delkor, Rick has led a multi-year development effort to align robotic equipment design with the ever-changing packaging requirements of today’s mass merchandisers and e-commerce retailers. Rick has been recognized by Walmart as a thought leader on the topic of retail ready packaging. Rick has been invited by Walmart to Bentonville numerous times to speak on this topic to both Walmart executives as well as Walmart suppliers. Rick has been awarded several important package patents for new retail ready shipper concepts, the most important of which is his invention of the Delkor Cabrio Case®, which has become the preferred package at major mass merchandisers. Estimated 2021 volume of the Cabrio Case is over 500 million cases across many product categories, including significant volume in the Refrigerated Foods category. Rick will offer insights and ideas to help you to recognize opportunities for automation as well as offering real-world examples of success stories that others have experienced. What is the latest in practical applications of robotics? What business risks can be addressed through automation? How to create a roadmap to implementing automation at your facility! How to change your employees from ‘doubt and fear’ into ‘opportunity and growth’! How to Reduce cost of packaging materials with automation!
