Report From Henning Drive, May 17th, 2021 www.burnabyteachers.com May 17th, 2021 Volume 3, Issue 18 Report From Henning Drive POSTINGS The first round of postings continues to be open until May 25. This date has been extended from the UPCOMING original closing date of May 18. There will be further rounds of until early July. It is a good idea to apply EVENTS to the positions that interest you even if you are not sure that you will be called. For example if you were laid off applying to positions now is still good practice. Please call the BTA office if you have questions or need guidance. • RA May 18 BURNABY BUDGET Zoom The Burnaby school district has projected a 12.5 million dollar shortfall and have proposed numerous cuts that would result in the loss of close to 40 Burnaby teaching jobs (https://burnabyschools.ca/wp-content/ • BTA AGM uploads/2021/05/210506-2021-22-Budget-Proposals-Public-Mtg-1.pdf). These proposed cuts come after May 25 190 Burnaby teachers received layoff notices. The cuts will hurt across the board but particularly our most Zoom vulnerable students and specialty programs. The BTA has been highlighting the devastating impact of these cuts to School Trustees, MLAs and the local media (see links below). We will continue to advocate and push for more resources and supports for our school communities at a time when we need more not less. The final budget will be approved on Tuesday May 25th by School Trustees at the Board meeting. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/burnaby-coquitlam-teacher-associations-facing- devastating-job-losses-1.6024076 https://globalnews.ca/video/7858633/job-cuts-layoffs-as-burnaby-school-district-faces-budget-shortfall https://www.burnabynow.com/local-news/burnaby-school-board-eyeing-cuts-to-cover-124-m-budget- shortfall-3772092 BTA Office Hours BTA AGM 8 am - 4:30 pm The BTA AGM is fast approaching.
