      NEW RIVERS FOR CRUISERS
To meet the demands of repeat customers, lines are
upping their capacity on less-travelled rivers such as the
Douro in Portugal, which saw an 85 per cent increase in
UK travellers in 2017. Russia, too, saw strong growth,
with 70 per cent more visitors. Some Asian countries,
particularly India, had as much as 27 per cent growth,
while Egypt’s Nile is also proving popular. CLIA
Australasia Managing Director Joel Katz said Australia
tends to follow trends from the UK, so we look to them to
forecast the industry. “One of the most significant trends
we’re hearing from river cruise operators is the increasing
popularity of itineraries beyond traditional favourites on
the Rhine and Danube,” he said. “River cruising has a very
high repeat rate, so as travellers return for another cruise,
they often look to try new waterways.”
