Rodents have a right for best surgical practice
Interview with Dr. Petra Seebeck, veterinary and manager of the Zurich Integrative Rodent Physiology (ZIRP), a core
facility of the University of Zurich founded 2006 by the ZIHP
Surgery is a frequently used procedure in experimental studies involving rodents. Nevertheless, scientists com-
monly underestimate its impact both on the overall health and wellbeing of these small laboratory animals as
well as on the quality of research data. For this reason, they often neglect good surgical practice. With the ambition
to improve this situation, Petra Seebeck started a project together with Stephan Zeiter from the AO Research
Institute Davos with the goal to develop minimal standards for training of scientists and for conduction of rodent
surgery. The ZIHP talked with her about her commitment for best possible conditions in animal studies.

Im Oktober 2019 wurde ein neues Forum für Medizin & Gesellschaft in der denkmalgeschützten «Alten Anatomie»
eröffnet, die im Park zwischen Universitätsspital, Universität Zürich und ETH liegt und von diesen Institutionen
getragen wird.
Als neuer Veranstaltungsort sollen hier Interaktionen zwischen Medizin und Gesellschaft ermöglicht und Gesund-
heit und Krankheit in einer Weise thematisiert werden, die den Menschen in den Mittelpunkt stellt.
Wenn die Medizin nicht nur Leben retten, sondern Lebensqualität erhalten oder steigern will, muss sie die Bedürf-
nis- und Erfahrungswelt von Patientinnen und Patienten auch in ihren nicht-quantifizierbaren Aspekten stärker
einbeziehen. Geistes- und sozialwissenschaftliche Perspektiven sind genauso gefragt, wie medizinisch-humanwis-
senschaftliche und technologische. Interprofessionalität und die Einbindung der Öffentlichkeit sind für die Zukunft
der Medizin wichtig. Durch den Einbezug von Kunst, Design, Musik und Literatur kann der Blick auf medizinische
Forschung und Versorgungspraxis erweitert werden. Kooperationen mit Fachhochschulen und anderen Organisa-
tionen aus dem Gesundheitsbereich sind angestrebt. Die Geschichte des Gebäudes und die Zukunft des Hochschul-
quartiers werden in Veranstaltungen ebenfalls aufgegriffen. Das Programm umfasst interne und öffentliche Ange-
bote.
