Rosebery News Dear Parents and Carers 22 January 2021 We appear to be very much in the eye of the storm generated by the pandemic right now. Our thoughts are particularly with those of you who are working in our hospitals, in the most extraordinarily difficult circumstances, to whom we extend our sincere thanks for everything that you are doing. We are also mindful that so many of you are involved in delivering other critical services and we are also very grateful to you. We are so sorry to learn that many families have experienced bereavements over the last few weeks and we are thinking of you and all members of our community who are going through so much, at the moment. In the face of a climate of anxiety, and in the context of such profound restrictions to our lives, it is even more remarkable that our students have undertaken another week of remote learning with such spirit and resilience. We know that this is not easy, but it has been terrific to see the fabulous painting that our Art students in Year 11 have produced, to have observed the fitness sessions that our Year 7, 8 and 9 students have been undertaking at home and to hear from all our teachers how impressed they are with their students’ continued commitment and engagement in all subject areas. Thank you to those parents and carers who completed the remote learning questionnaire; if you didn’t have the chance to do so, please find the link here. The comments and suggestions from parents and carers have been very helpful, but it has also been good to see that the majority of students and parents/carers feel that our provision is significantly better than in the first lockdown. Ofqual Consultation following the cancellation of exams Mr Lach and I have written to all Year 11 and Year 13 students and their parents/carers to outline the approach we would like our students to take, following the release of the Ofqual consultation about how students will be assessed, in the absence of A Level and GCSE examinations. You can find full details of the consultation here. Unfortunately, the central theme of our letter was that there is a great deal we do not know, and will not know for some time, however we are clear that students need to continue to remain committed to their work - just as they would have been if the exams were still going ahead - as this work is important and will contribute to any process of determining final grades along with the wealth of evidence that we already have from work and assessments which have already been completed. As soon as we have greater clarity we will, of course, share that with you. COVID-19 Testing You will have read that the government has suspended ‘daily’ testing of staff and students who are currently in school. I have tried to be restrained in sharing my thoughts about the confused and erroneous decision-making, combined with the most confused communication from the Department for Education over the last 10 months, but their approach to testing is yet another example of how we have had to manage U-turn after U-turn on the most serious and significant of issues. To be clear, asymptomatic testing, where staff and students who are currently at school are tested on a weekly basis is to continue. At Rosebery we have started to roll out testing to staff and intend to write to the parents/carers of those students who are on site to offer testing to them next week. What we have not planned to do is to roll out the daily or ‘serial’ testing, which is where a person, who is identified as a close contact of someone who has received a positive test, does not self-isolate and instead continues to come into school and is tested on a daily basis. We believe - and the DfE has now confirmed this - that those people should self-isolate for 10 days, as they did before Christmas, as this is the safest approach for them and for our community. At some stage it may be made mandatory for us to do this, and therefore you will see reference to it on the consent form, which you will receive before your child joins the testing programme in the future. And finally… Despite the continued roll out of the vaccine, which provides such hope for the future, it is still very difficult to see beyond the here and now. However, it is often young people, and indeed it is often young women, who show us the way forward and no one has expressed this more beautifully, or powerfully, in recent months than Amanda Gorman, at the Inauguration Ceremony for President Joe Biden on Wednesday. If you haven’t seen her perform this, I urge you to do so, and you will find the link here and her poem on the next page. Have a good weekend Ros Allen, Executive Headteacher 1

This book is a short biography of Simone Biles, the superstar athlete. Simone’s early childhood was very difficult and she and her younger sister were eventually adopted by her grandparents after her mother was unable to look after them due to problems with drug addiction. Simone always had too much energy and gymnastic classes proved to be the perfect sport for her. She worked hard and won many competitions. Her goal was to be selected for the 2016 Olympic gymnastic team. Today she is an inspiration to thousands of young girls. Mrs J Little, Librarian Suitable for all readers 7
