                        Green energy and image

Solar facade is ecologically sustainable and meets the global need
for renewable energy. The photovoltaic solar facade complies with
the latest requirements for higher energy efficiency and helps in
obtaining LEED and BREEAM credits. It also decreases real estate
maintenance costs and reduces carbon emissions. Liberta™ Solar
facade is a value adding solution for both the real estate owner and
                        the end user.

    10
Payback time

Payback time is dependent on a number of factors, including tariffs, the sun and
weather conditions, geographical location and local energy pricing. If tariffs are used
in your country, the produced energy will be fed into general grid and compensated
with certain input price, after which electricity needed for the building is obtained
at standard price. In countries where no tariffs are used, the produced energy will be
utilized by the building itself.

Smaller garbon footprint - case example Finland
• Annual electricity production ~ 84 kWh/m2
• Annually avoided CO2 emissions 74 kg/m2.

TECHNICAL & ENERGY
          SOLUTION

                        Power generation & technology

Liberta™ Solar panels’ PV-modules are based on photovoltaic CIGS
                        thin-film technology (copper-indium-gallium-selenide) which is
fast becoming the dominant technology in solar cells. The system
is not dependent on solar heat, only on radiation, making energy
collection possible even when the weather is overcast and/or during
light summer nights in North. To maximize the energy generation it is
recommended to design the Liberta™ Solar panel area as unified as
possible and to be oriented southwards.

    12
Technical solution

Ruukki Solar Facade is fully integrated facade system which converts solar radiation
directly to electricity utilizing the most advanced and efficient PV-film technology.

1. No visible cables, no penetrations to wall, all cables are in space behind the panels
2. Behind the wall electricity is collected via cables
3. The electricity is transmitted to the inverter via cables
4. Inverter converts the electricity into alternating current (AC) which is the most used
   power type of electrical devices

                                                                              2.

                 1. 3.

to grid - delivery includes all the components and accessories
required on the site. The system will require individual project-
specific local approval. In countries where a feed-in-tariff system
is used, all produced energy is fed into the grid and bought back
what needed. Contract with a local power network distributor is
required. In areas where there is no feed-in-tariff, the electricity
is utilized directly for the real-estates own purposes.

User experiences and feedback from architects and contractors
that Elmer Larsen, Manager at Ruukki Construction, expressed after
presenting the Visualizer for the first time in United Kindom:

"...Every single person which I presented the visualizer to have
given very positive feedback to the Visualizer tool and generally
have all been impressed with what it can do.

Architects in particular are impressed and see this as a new idea
and a way to get an initial idea to how various types of profiles and
colours would work and help them to get a better understanding
of the finished product.

Contractors do also feel that this will be useful to present ideas
to a clients but also making it possible to get an instant message
across during a meeting to establish potential alternatives..."

Positive challenge

The journey how the Liberta™ Solar Facade has evolved is
fascinating. In a big company like Ruukki, different functions
and organisations in co-operation with customers as well,
can create together a crossfunctional system - an ecosystem
where different parties are sparring and feeding each other.
And when able to conclude the development paths with
combined effort, we are on the way for introducing innovative
and successful end products like Solar Facade for you.

Liberta™ Solar Facade will complete the Ruukki® Design
Palette - architectural claddings offering with new dimension,
active energy generation. The facade cladding is no longer
just a passive raincoat. This is one step on the mission
for building architecturally high standard and sustainable
                     environment for all of us.

However, without you it is not possible to succeed in the
mission towards better architecture and environment. We
contribute by doing our best - and would like to challenge
you to join our journey with all of your energy when
implementing the built environment for all of us.

The research and development work started with special interest for solar energy and photovoltaic
technology with business potential.

Pretty soon we identified possibilities for building integrated solutions. The most promising
integrated solution seemed to be the novel thin film CIGS-technology combined with glass.

At the same time we identified a product - Liberta™ Glass panels - innovated recently within
Ruukki, that would provide a perfect platform when developing the building integrated
photovoltaic solution further.

The Liberta™ Glass panels were developed for architecturally high standard and cost efficient
new type of solution for a glass facade, utilizing Ruukki´s well known Liberta™ Rainscreen panel
system in an innovative way.

Then we simply combined the Liberta™ Glass panel with photovoltaic thin film modules. This
simple, yet clever combination sealed the successful outcome
- spearhead product to be introduced to the markets.
