Following is a list of LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS available to graduating seniors at
 Thomas Worthington High School to help them further their education or career.
 Students are strongly encouraged to review all scholarship criteria, and apply for
               any available scholarships for which they are eligible.

APPLICATIONS
PLEASE NOTE THAT SOME SCHOLARSHIPS REQUIRE THE GENERAL APPLICATION, SOME A SEPARATE
APPLICATION, AND SOME WILL REQUIRE ADDITIONAL ESSAYS OR RECOMMENDATIONS. The type of
application required is listed below the scholarship title in this brochure. Pay close attention to the
specific requirements for each scholarship.

Each completed GENERAL APPLICATION must include:
   1. A copy of your resume
   2. A copy of your transcript (requested from a School Counseling secretary)
   3. A minimum of one letter of recommendation

For the General Application, you will need to make a copy of the completed packet for each
scholarship you apply for; i.e., if you are applying for five scholarships, you will need to make five copies
of ALL items above, assembled into individual packets (do not insert into envelopes or folders).
Respectfully, the School Counseling Office will not make copies for you.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 26, 2021 (please check the bulletin for due dates other than 3/26)
All scholarship forms and applications, including your resume, transcript and recommendation, must be
returned to the School Counseling Office by 3:15 pm Friday, March 26, 2021. NO APPLICATIONS WILL BE
ACCEPTED IN THE COUNSELING OFFICE PAST THE SPECIFIED DUE DATE.

ALICE BOCTOR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
GENERAL APPLICATION
This scholarship is in honor and memory of Alice Boctor, an amazing science teacher and an incredible
person. For those blessed to have known her, she taught them through her every word, action, and
story that the greatest strength in life is the strength of joyfulness through hardship. This $1300
scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who shows good character and is a positive influence
on others. Applicants should have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and pursuing a career in science or science
education.

CAPTAIN DAVID M. SPELLACY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
SEPARATE APPLICATION – Application Due March 12, 2021
The David M. Spellacy Memorial Scholarship was established in February, 1995, by the Thomas
Worthington Wrestling Parents’ Club. Capt. David M Spellacy, a 1980 graduate of Worthington High
School, was a good wrestler and a great teammate. After graduation, Dave was a commissioned officer
in the United States Marine Corps. During Captain Spellacy’s service in Desert Storm, his plane was shot
down, and he was killed in action. We have established this scholarship to honor this American hero.
Eligibility: You must be a Thomas Worthington High School graduating senior and a wrestler.
Applications will be handed out by the wrestling coach.

CARDINAL THEATRE SCHOLARSHIP
GENERAL APPLICATION
$1,000 will be awarded to one student who has made a significant contribution to the theatre program,
is an active member of the Thespian Society of Thomas Worthington, and hopes to pursue the
performing arts in the future.

COLLEGE START FOR WOMEN
SEPARATE APPLICATION – Application AVAILABLE April 1; Due April 20
A $5000 scholarship made available to support a female student of immigrant parents. Emphasis on first
generation students, who are attending Columbus State Community College. Minimum high school GPA
of 2.8 required. This scholarship will cover the cost of one year’s tuition and books, with the possibility of
renewal for a second year. Application will be submitted on the Columbus State Community College’s

COLONIAL HILLS CIVIC ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP
SEPARATE APPLICATION – Application Due April 1, 2021
An award will be given to a graduating senior from one of the area high schools who resides in the
Colonial Hills neighborhood. The award is for advanced education and is based upon service to the
neighborhood (in a variety of ways), a short essay and one letter of recommendation. The CHCA will be
awarding 2-3 scholarships between $500 and $4,000, depending on volume of applications and student

COLONIAL HILLS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP
GENERAL APPLICATION
The Colonial Hills Elementary School Scholarship Fund is providing up to six scholarships for deserving
students who have attended Colonial Hills Elementary School and who are pursuing post-secondary
education at a college, university or junior college. The recipient(s) of this award will receive $3100 -
$650 annually toward their first two years of college and an additional $900 annually for the following
two years. Selection criteria include academic potential, character, and financial need.

COOPER FAMILY WORTHINGWAY MIDDLE SCHOOL ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP
SEPARATE APPLICATION
Two $1000 scholarships (non renewable) will be awarded to deserving students who have attended
Worthingway Middle School full time for a minimum of two (2) years and be a graduating senior in
Worthington City Schools. Each applicant will be asked to write a 2-3 page essay to submit to the judging
panel, which will consist of the current Worthingway principal, assistant principal, school counselor, and
a current member of the Cooper Family Foundation Board.

DAVID B. ELDER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
GENERAL APPLICATION
In memory of David B. Elder, former Worthington City Manager of 26 years. Mr. Elder was a community
visionary, dedicated public servant, and leader who cared for the well-being of Worthington Schools and
the residents of Worthington. This $1000 scholarship is to support high school students pursuing a career
in education. Particular attention will be given to those with financial need, active service to his/her
community, and strong moral character.

#DREWSTRONG ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP
SEPARATE APPLICATION – Application Due April 9, 2021
The #DrewStrong Athletic Scholarship was established in memory of Worthington Kilbourne High School
graduate Drew George (2016) who was diagnosed his sophomore year with acute myeloid leukemia at
the age of 15 and passed away in 2019. He was a 3 sport athlete at WKHS playing soccer, basketball, and
baseball. The #DrewStrong Athletic Scholarship provides a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior
with a GPA of at least 3.25. Applicants must have lettered in at least one varsity sport, must submit 2
letters of recommendation, write a personal statement, and plan on attending a secondary public or
private institution.

DUBLIN-WORTHINGTON & WORTHINGTON AM ROTARY CLUBS SCHOLARSHIP
SEPARATE APPLICATION
This two year scholarship will be awarded to a senior who is starting at Columbus State Community
College, and will cover the cost of tuition and books up to $5,000 each academic year. The award will be
based on academic achievement, school activities, community service, financial need and a personal
interview. In addition to completing an application, each applicant should become familiar with Rotary
and will be asked to write an essay on how s/he exemplifies the rotary motto of “Service Above Self” in
250 words or less, plus a personal statement in 250 words or less, provide their work experience and two
letters of recommendation. Please indicate your class rank on the application form, and be sure your
ACT and/or SAT scores are printed on your transcript.

EVENING STREET ELEMENTARY PTA SCHOLARSHIP
SEPARATE APPLICATION
The Evening Street Elementary School Scholarship Fund is providing a scholarship for a deserving student
who has attended Evening Street Elementary School (minimum of grades 2-6) and who is pursuing
post-secondary education at a college, university or junior college. Two $500 scholarships, one for a male
and one for a female will be awarded which will be sent directly to the attending college in September.
Application plus an essay are required.

FCBANK SCHOLARSHIP
SEPARATE APPLICATION – Application Due March 28, 2021
FCBank is committed to the communities and businesses it serves, and is a proud supporter of the next
generation of business leaders. Eligible students have the opportunity to enhance their business
education by participating in FCBank’s scholarship essay contest. One winner from TWHS will receive a
$500 scholarship, to be used for continuing business education. Students can apply online at

application found on the TW website.

THE GARY SMITH HEART & HURDLE AWARD
SEPARATE APPLICATION
In 1973, Gary Smith started the Occupational Work Adjustment program at Worthington High School.
This scholarship honors Gary Smith’s dedication to his students who were “non-traditional.” The
scholarship is designed for applicants who have overcome personal and/or academic hurdles and are
planning to attend a career/technical program, college or community college, or for the student who is
advancing into competitive employment. Up to $1,000 will be awarded. This scholarship will also be
funded from proceeds of the Gary Smith Worthington Classic.

GARY SMITH WORTHINGTON CLASSIC SCHOLARSHIP
SEPARATE APPLICATION
Funded from proceeds of the Gary Smith Worthington Classic, these scholarships are designed to honor
Gary Smith, a compassionate teacher and track and cross country coach at Worthington/Thomas
Worthington High School. $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to each of two TWHS seniors who have
been members of the varsity girls or boys TWHS track or cross country teams for at least two years, have
at least a 3.0 grade point average, have demonstrated teamwork, leadership and contribution to team,
peers, and community. In addition, this applicant should be able to explain a personal understanding of
Mr. Smith’s philosophy on running and life: “Run as hard as you can...then let your heart take you the
rest of the way.”

GUSSSTRONG AWARD
SEPARATE APPLICATION
The GussStrong Award is presented annually to a TWHS senior baseball player. This award was
established to honor former TWHS baseball coach and teacher Stephen Gussler. This award is a one-time
scholarship in the amount of $1,500, funded by the GussStrong Foundation. Coach Gussler had an
outstanding career as both a health teacher and as a baseball coach. In the classroom and on the field,
his mission remained the same; to inspire students to believe in themselves and succeed in school. In
order to be considered for the award, please submit an essay based on what you believe it means to be
‘GussStrong’, how you live your life ‘GussStrong’, and how you inspire others to live ‘GussStrong’.

HAROLD C. McCORD SCHOLARSHIP
GENERAL APPLICATION
A scholarship fund was established in 1974 in recognition of the dedicated and distinguished service of
H.C. McCord, Superintendent of the Worthington School District from 1938 to 1973. A $150 award will
be given to a Worthington student who meets the following criteria: a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above, a
demonstrated interest in the welfare of others as evidenced by significant contributions to a variety of
school and community activities, an unusual interest and aptitude toward a specific career, and the
respect of peers.

HUTTA & COOK ORTHODONTICS SCHOLARSHIP
GENERAL APPLICATION
A one-time $1500 scholarship will be awarded to a student from Thomas Worthington High School who
will be attending The Ohio State University. This scholarship is given by Dr. Hutta as a memorial to be
announced annually. This scholarship is not to be awarded to an applicant who has received a combined
total of $1,000 or more in other local or corporate scholarships.

JOE HART MEMORIAL- GREATER WORTHINGTON AREA REAL ESTATE ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS
SEPARATE APPLICATION
One scholarship up to $1000 will be awarded to a deserving senior who plans to further his/her
education by attending a college, technical school or trade school. In addition to the application,
selection will be based on an essay entitled, “Why Worthington is a Great Place to Live,” financial need,
motivation, and GPA of 3.0 or above.

KIWANIS CLUB OF NORTHERN COLUMBUS, MYRLE H. DENNIS SCHOLARSHIP
SEPARATE APPLICATION
The Kiwanis Club of Northern Columbus will award two to three $1,000 scholarships to graduating
seniors from one of the local area (Beechwold, Clintonville, Worthington) high schools. Students whose
legal residence is in “Northern’s” service area (Route 270 on the North, Olentangy River on the West,
Conrail on the East, and Arcadia Avenue on the South) are eligible to apply for this scholarship. The
recipient will be selected on the basis of grades, financial need, leadership and citizenship. Students can

LILLIAN MACER SCHOLARSHIP
SEPARATE APPLICATION
Lillian Macer was the first African-American math teacher in the Worthington School System. She taught
math in the then predominantly white district for over (20+) years. This scholarship awards $1500-$2500
to a deserving Worthington senior with a 3.0 GPA planning to pursue a degree in science, technology,
engineering, or math (STEM). The scholarship is being named in her honor from the Delta Foundation of
Greater Columbus. Students can apply online at:

LT. CLINTON L. NICELY MEMORIAL FUND SCHOLARSHIP
SEPARATE APPLICATION
Established in memory of Clint Nicely, an outstanding student-athlete at Worthington High School, this
fund provides a $500 annual scholarship for a student-athlete from his alma mater. Student athletes who
have contributed on the high school baseball team, who rank in the top half of their class academically,
who are enrolling in a college or university following graduation, and who are overall assets to the area
Worthington High School serves. Nominations will be made by the TW baseball coach.

MATTHEW G MINER SCHOLARSHIP
SEPARATE APPLICATION – Application Due March 1, 2021
$4000.00 scholarship to one TWHS senior who will attend a college or university in fall 2021. Candidates
must be in the top 20% of their graduating class. Preference will be given to candidates who are the first
family member to attend college. Students can apply online at:

MEDICAL MUTUAL SCHOLARSHIP
SEPARATE APPLICATION – Application Due April 1, 2021
$1000 scholarship for the six top applicants across the state who demonstrate a commitment to
outstanding academic and community service efforts. Students must submit a one page essay that
includes their major and describes how receiving a scholarship would impact their lives. Current
transcript and FAFSA SAR also required. Students can apply online at:

MOOG GROUP WITH KELLER WILLIAMS CAPITAL PARTNERS SCHOLARSHIP
SEPARATE APPLICATION
$1000 scholarship available to Thomas Worthington seniors based on their demonstration of
determination, discipline, compassion, ambition and work ethic. Students must submit a completed
application which includes: their transcript, resume, two letters of recommendation, and responses to
two short answer questions. All applicants will be considered equally and finalists may be selected for a
follow-up conversation via phone/zoom.

THE NATE MARBURGER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
SEPARATE APPLICATION
This $1,200 scholarship is being offered to honor Nate Marburger, a 2009 Thomas Worthington graduate,
who was planning to attend the University of Toledo in the College of Civil Engineering in the fall. Nate
was a lettered four-year soccer player and scholar athlete who showed leadership skills in school
activities and community service. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior pursuing a
career in Engineering who shows good character and leadership in school activities and community
service.

NEW ENGLAND MASONIC LODGE #4 SCHOLARSHIP
SEPARATE APPLICATION – Application Due April 5, 2021
New England Lodge #4 (F&AM) is offering a $1,000 scholarship for the best essay on the subject of "Civic
Virtue.” New England Lodge was founded by James Kilbourne in 1803 and has been active in
Worthington for the past 219 years. The lodge seeks to promote and teach values such as civic virtue to
its members. Your paper might very well serve to help instruct future members.

OLIVIA MIDNIGHT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
SEPARATE APPLICATION – Application Due March 1, 2021
A $500 to $2000 scholarship in loving memory of TWHS student, Olivia Midnight. Applicants must have
completed a minimum three (3) semesters of visual fine art classes, write an essay, provide a resume and
transcript, along with two letters of recommendation. FAFSA SAR is required for submission as well.
Applicants may submit a picture of a piece of artwork that demonstrates their passion and purpose.
Students may be college bound, or participating in an alternate post-graduation pathway. Students can

PARTNERS FOR COMMUNITY AND CHARACTER (PCC) AWARD
SEPARATE APPLICATION – Nomination Due March 24; Application Due May 1
A $1000 scholarship available to a Worthington senior who is nominated by a community member
(teacher, administrator, coach, grandparent, etc) by March 24, 2021 using this google form:
https://forms.gle/RGryHxAbD6NoMrLM7. Qualified students will receive an invitation to apply by May 1
for this award. Applications will include: an essay (1,000 words or less), letter of recommendation, copy
of high school transcript, list of extracurricular activities, and post high school plans. Entries will be
reviewed by PCC board members and will be judged primarily on the content of the essay, although
academic transcripts, reference letters and outside activities may also be used by the judges in making
their final decision.

SLATE HILL ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP
SEPARATE APPLICATION
Slate Hill Elementary PTA is proud to offer two $500 scholarships to an alumnus of Slate Hill Elementary
who is planning to attend college or technical school in the fall following graduation. Applicants must
submit an essay not to exceed 500 words on how Worthington Schools, especially Slate Hill Elementary,
have helped them develop the skills and characteristics needed to succeed in future endeavors.
Applicants must also demonstrate that they have contributed to this community through their
involvement in service projects (i.e. volunteerism, sixth grade camp counselor, scouting, tutoring, etc.).
Neither financial need nor academic achievements are considered. Essay, resume and Slate Hill
application required.

SENIOR ART AWARD
NO APPLICATION
One scholarship will be provided to the senior art show winner whose piece is voted on during Cardinal
Day. The artist’s work will then be on display in the Thomas Worthington library and recognized.

THERON AND LUCILLA WRIGHT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
GENERAL APPLICATION
This $800 scholarship is awarded annually to one student from each of the Worthington high schools.
The scholarships are in memory of Theron and Lucilla Wright. Selections will be based on scholastic
achievement, athletic participation/interest, and financial need. Applicants will be required to submit
copies of their FAFSA SAR or the family’s last two federal income tax returns to verify financial need.

TWHS ACTIVITY CLUB SCHOLARSHIPS
SEPARATE APPLICATION
Thomas Worthington High School Activity Club, a school support and service organization whose
purpose is to assist the students of TWHS by increasing opportunities for their growth and development,
is offering four (4) scholarships of $500 each to members of the Class of 2020. Applicants must have
contributed significant volunteer efforts to the school and/or the local community and submit an essay
about that service. Please complete the TWHS Activity Club Scholarship Application only (not the
General Application). Please do not include additional paperwork, such as letters of recommendation,
transcripts, resumes or other documents. Please note that this is a one-time scholarship award for a
total of $500.

TWHS PTSO CAREER SCHOLARSHIPS
GENERAL APPLICATION
Five (5) $500 scholarships will be awarded to senior students who plan to further their education beyond
high school. The recipients will be selected on the basis of leadership, character and a personal
narrative, with an emphasis on school and community service. Student transcripts will be given
secondary consideration.

TWHS SCHOLARSHIP
GENERAL APPLICATION
Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to deserving seniors who plan to further their education by
attending a college, technical school or trade school. The recipients will be selected on the basis of
financial need with preference given to first generation college students. Selection criteria include
academic growth and character.

TWHS STUDENT COUNCIL SCHOLARSHIPS
GENERAL APPLICATION
Thomas Worthington Student Council will award two (2) $500 scholarships to students who have
participated on student council. Applicants must be attending an institute of higher education (two year
or four year). Student’s financial need and overall contribution and effort to student council will be
considered. Applicants must be exemplary role models of outstanding character who are respected by
both students and staff. Students’ participation in, and leadership of, Student Council sponsored events
will be considered.

TWHS TOUCHDOWN CLUB SCHOLARSHIP
SEPARATE APPLICATION
The Thomas Worthington High School Touchdown Club is offering four (4) $500 scholarships to football
players from the Class of 2020. Applicants will need to demonstrate athletic participation, other school
and community activities along with submitting an essay as to the reasons why the Applicant should be
awarded one of the TWHS Touchdown Club Scholarships. Applicants will need to complete the essay
only (not the General Application). Please do not include additional materials such as resume, letter(s)
of recommendation, transcripts, etc.

WILLIAM GALVIN SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP
GENERAL APPLICATION
This $2000 scholarship will be awarded to a top high school senior student who wishes to further his/her
education in Science at a collegiate level. GPA will be considered.

WORTHINGTON ALLIANCE OF BLACK FAMILIES AND EDUCATORS
SEPARATE APPLICATION - Online Application Only
The Worthington Alliance of Black Families and Educators (WABFE) scholarship will award one $250
scholarship to a Black student currently enrolled in Worthington City Schools. Applicants will need to be
in good academic standing and demonstrate intent to enter a two or four year college program, formal
technical or vocational training and/or military. The scholarship is intended to be used by the student for
tuition and/or related expenses. The online scholarship application can be found here:

WORTHINGTON AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE - WOMEN’S BUSINESS NETWORK SCHOLARSHIP
SEPARATE APPLICATION
The Women’s Business Network of the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce will award one $500
scholarship to a senior girl at Thomas Worthington or Worthington Kilbourne High School. The winner
will be selected after completing a competitive essay-type application. The Women’s Business Network
provides women business owners, managers and professionals with opportunities for professional
exchange, peer support and career development. The group is committed to mentoring and encouraging
females pursuing professional and business careers. Award money will be paid directly to the recipient
and may be used for tuition, books or any other expense directly related to furthering education in
preparation for a professional/business career.

WORTHINGTON EDUCATION ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS
SEPARATE APPLICATION - Online Application Only - Due April 5, 2021
The Worthington Education Association is once again offering two (2) $1,000 scholarships to deserving
seniors. Any senior dependent of a WEA member attending school in another district is eligible to apply.

WORTHINGTON EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT PROFESSIONALS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS
SEPARATE APPLICATION – Application Due April 14, 2021
Three scholarships in the amount of $500 will be awarded to students pursuing a post-high school
program for the purpose of furthering their education beyond high school. The applicant's parent must
be a member of the Worthington Educational Support Professionals Association, and financial need is
considered. Applications will be judged on neatness and readability, as well as content and grade point

WORTHINGTON ALUMNI LACROSSE ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP (MENS)
NO APPLICATION - Selection made by the Alumni Board of WALA
Up to two $1000 scholarships will be awarded to senior Lacrosse players from Thomas Worthington High
School. The recipient must have demonstrated leadership on the lacrosse field and in the classroom. To
be eligible, the student-athlete must have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA and confirmation of enrolling in an
institute of higher education.

WORTHINGTON PTA COUNCIL SCHOLARSHIPS
SEPARATE APPLICATION - Application Due April 6, 2021
Up to 6, one-time $500 scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors from any Worthington high
school (Linworth, TWHS, Worthington Academy, or WKHS), for post-high school education or training.
These scholarships will be awarded to the applicants who best demonstrate a commitment to helping
others by participating in activities that promote values such as: volunteerism, initiative, inclusion,
durability/legacy, and role model. GPA will not be considered.

WORTHINGTON WOMEN’S LACROSSE ALUMNAE SCHOLARSHIP
SEPARATE APPLICATION - See Head Coach for Application
The Alumnae Scholarship is awarded in memory of a former Worthington lacrosse player, Laura Lambert
(Class of 1988). This college scholarship is awarded annually to a senior female lacrosse player from
Thomas Worthington High School who possesses traits similar to Laura’s. Scholarship applications are
presented to all senior lacrosse players during the spring season. The recipient must have achieved a 2.5
GPA, played at least two seasons of lacrosse, demonstrated leadership, and possessed a true love for
lacrosse. This award is granted by the officers of the Worthington Women’s Lacrosse Alumnae
Association.
