16 | COLLEGE STATION PARKS & RECREATION SPRING GUIDE 2020 | SPECIAL PROGRAM & EVENT OVERVIEWPARKS MAINTENANCE
By Kelly Kelbly, Parks & Recreation Assistant Director
Since 1971, the Parks and Recreation Department has dedicated itself to caring
for and maintaining College Station’s beautiful parks system.
When the city incorporated in 1938, it proudly took over its first park, Mable
Claire Thomas Park. Today, our inventory includes 53 developed parks and two
municipal cemeteries encompassing about 1,400 acres.
The Parks and Recreation Department makes safety, functionality, and
aesthetics its top priority.
Keeping up with yard work, flowerbeds and general maintenance around the
house can be a struggle that consumes significant resources, time and money.
With only 50 employees in the operations division, our department experiences
the same challenges. Our crews strive and toil to keep your parks user-ready.
Beyond the daily upkeep, our staff also implements a Capital Improvements
Program in conjunction with the Capital Projects Department, Fiscal
Services, and the City Manager’s Office. We then seek approval from
the city council to pursue improvement projects.
We develop the project list by reviewing our asset management plan,
frequency of use, risks and hazards, survey results, and other variables.
During the last fiscal year, the department was involved in 29 projects,
completing 21, and in the next few months, we will finish the other eight. The
projects include new signage, soccer goals, playground and roof replacements,
trails and sidewalks, completion of the 2008 bond projects, and the design of a
multi-million dollar diamond field complex.
In the next year, Stephen C. Beachy Central Park patrons will see improvements
to the pavilion, athletic restrooms, sidewalks, and Fun for All playground. Staff
is also working with an engineer to alleviate drainage issues at Steeplechase
Park, as well as adding a dog wash station and replacing the playground
and surfacing. In the spring, construction begins on the fits phase of Texas
Independent Ballpark at Midtown College Station.
That’s only a few of the projects our citizens can anticipate.
As the Parks and Recreation Department prepares to update our 10-year
master plan this year, we will continue to monitor our existing system, visit
with citizens, track growth by area and population, and observe trends. Plans
for future projects will continue to support the fundamental element of our
mission – “to provide the good things in life."

SENIOR GAMES: SAME GREAT EVENT,
DIFFERENT MONTH
By Gene Ballew, Athletics & Tourism Manager
After a couple of years of bad weather and conflicts with other
events in February, we have decided to move this year’s Senior
Games to Sept. 25-27. We can’t guarantee perfect weather, but
we can always try for a warmer time of year.
In the past, we typically had about 400 people register for the
Senior Games, but poor weather often led to the cancellation of
outdoor events, which means participants lose the opportunity
to compete. By moving to the fall, we hope the roads are dry for
cycling, the pits are puddle free for track and field, and the
golfers and disc golfers won’t lose as many balls and discs.
The Senior Games offer multiple events for athletes of all skill
levels. The $30 participation fee includes a shirt and the social,
with additional fees charged for each sports event. Registration
runs May 1-Sept. 14.
For more information, visit cstx.gov/SeniorGames.

COLLEGE STATION PARKS & RECREATION SPRING GUIDE 2020 | ATHLETICS | 27ADULT PROGRAMS SPIKEBALL QUICK-FIRE TOURNAMENT • REGISTRATION ENDS FEB. 5 Spikeball Roundnet is similar to two-player volleyball, but instead of hitting a large ball over a suspended net, players hit a smaller ball into a circular net low to the ground. Teams can still take three touches at a time — for a bump, set, or spike — as in volleyball. The objective is also the same: hit a shot the other team can't return. A Quick-Fire Tournament is a chance to play games in a few hours rather than all day. Teams can consist of only two players. Divisions include competitive and recreation. Teams will play others closer to their skill level throughout the night depending on whether they win or lose. The competitive division plays by the official Spikeball Roundnet Association rules, while the recreation division focuses on developmental skills and is more relaxed on rules. Equipment is provided.
