SPRING SEASON 2020 - Greenwich Theatre
WELCOME TO OUR NEW SEASON
As we continue to celebrate 50 years of operating here at Greenwich Theatre, we could not be
more aware of the importance of our audiences in keeping us going for the past half a century,
and giving us the confidence to look forward to 2069 and beyond. Funding comes and goes
based on political priorities, corporate sponsors ebb and flow with the economy, but our
audiences have supported us year after year since that proud opening 50 years ago and we
can only hope to see that kind of audience loyalty as we go forwards.
With those audiences in mind, both existing and new, we are delighted to present a season
which is genuinely for everyone. ‘Something for everyone’ is something of a hackneyed cliché,
a phrase used by marketeers to ensure as many sales as possible, but this season we have
thought about those who come to the theatre already, and those who may in the future, and
we have put together a season for all of them.
For families and children there is a whole host of exciting shows, from Michael Morpurgo’s Mimi
and the Mountain Dragon at half term to Meet Me A Tree, the interactive opera for the very
young. This year also sees the return of the Greenwich Children’s Theatre Festival, supported by
sales of Family Friends Memberships. For classic drama lovers, Lazarus Theatre Company are
back with Macbeth, Hedda Gabler and a new production of Peter Pan. If you prefer new writing,
don’t miss RedCape Theatre’s Thunder Road or Rhi Lloyd-Williams’ The Duck. For anyone who
loves musicals, Sharp Teeth present Polly (The Heartbreak Opera), their anarchic musical take
on John Gay’s sequel to The Beggar’s Opera. For lovers of immersive theatre, we welcome
Ferodo Bridges with their production of The White Plague, the acclaimed drama set amidst a
    blindness epidemic.
Finally, we are delighted to present The Incident Room – our acclaimed co-production with the
New Diorama Theatre which tells the true story of the hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper.
Whatever you choose to see this season, by becoming a friend of Greenwich Theatre you can
save 50% on the price of the tickets – so why not join us, book for your chosen shows, and then
pick one or two surprises – venture off the beaten track with us and enjoy the very best that UK
    theatre has to offer.

presence of the author himself! Actor John O’Connor
                                                delightfully recreates Dickens’s famous performance
of his best-loved ghost story. A Christmas Carol was the
first public reading Charles Dickens gave of his own work.
He enacted it over 150 times and the effect on the public
was phenomenal. ‘The success was most wonderful and
prodigious – perfectly astounding altogether!’ he said after the
first night. This Christmas, experience what it must have been
                                  like to be in
                                the audience!

Two women pack a car with training materials and medical supplies and set off on
a journey, leaving their ordinary lives behind and waving goodbye to darkness and
disappointment in the rear view mirror. It’s just for a couple of days, then life will return
to normal. But when things take an unexpected turn in a Travelodge and events spin out
of control, satnavs must be re-adjusted, and Maureen and Sylvie find themselves on the
road trip of a life time.

“Fun and feisty, a quirky road trip through
dreams and friendship, first aid tips and
cowboy boots. A very entertaining 70
minutes.”

WITCH HUNT
Witch Hunt asks who really holds the power in a
world where the witches have become the hunters
and the predators are now the prey. Following on
from their sell-out, award winning show Enter the
Dragons, A&E Comedy return with a spell-binding,
surreal and darkly hilarious tale, directed by
Cal McCrystal.
Witch Hunt weaves a cautionary fairy tale for
our time. We celebrate the wisdom of the witch,
unpack the notion of predator and conjure a world
of coven-ready weird sisters.
A ritualistic voodoo brouhaha designed to enchant
and hex the pricks and predators. Using buffoon,
puppetry and magic and armed with a Wiccan
sense of humour, A&E Comedy ask “Can we
use witchcraft to take down the Patriarchy?’
Yes we can!

human stories are still a central part.
As Butcher explains; “The songs are a reflection of the times we are living in,
though optimism is never too far below the surface! They are about humans; the
glorious screw-ups that we are - and the doubting saviours we can be.”
Mark and his band are a blistering live experience blending blues, soul and rock -

A BIRD IN THE HAND THEATRE PRESENTS

     MIDNIGHT
In the hours when most people are tucked up, sound asleep in their beds,
Midnight the cat rules the roost. She explores the rooftops and alleyways of her
town, encountering all the other creatures that are awake in the night. And in the
still, quiet moments between one day finishing and the next one beginning, she
has the ability to see and to understand all the dreams of the people sleeping in
     their beds below.
But when a wild wind blows through the town, strange things begin to happen.
Midnight is a dream-like show about time, the night and dreaming.
And about clever cats and really silly dogs.
For family audiences with children age 5+, Midnight combines
     beautiful puppetry, music and storytelling.

THE INDEPENDENT

THE PRODIGAL
SON
&
PASSION, POISON
& PETRIFACTION
(TWO ONE-ACT OPERAS)
L’enfant prodigue (The Prodigal Son) by Claude Debussy takes place at sunrise where
a Mother laments the absence of her prodigal son, an outcast after leaving his home
to pursue the world’s pleasures and realising there is ‘no place like home’. Composer,
Philip Hagemann has adapted the orchestration to chamber size and translated the
French text into English.
Passion, Poison and Petrifaction by Bernard Shaw is a comic mock melodrama
that gleefully skewers the murderous mayhem and convoluted plot turns of
Shakespearean drama. Hagemann’s music skilfully enhances Shaw’s wit with
the opera’s resolution movingly presented with the lover’s motif.
