Why is this important?
 Access to courses
  and Colleges.
                          Keep in mind the
 To maximise following:
    potential

 To prevent
    boredom!
• Entry
    Requirements.

• Course
    Requirements.

• Points
    Requirements.
 Different General Entry
    Requirements for each
    level
 There is a route for
    everyone
Please check entry requirements for any course you
are interested in as they may change.
In terms of entry to Third Level Colleges all subjects count
equally for CAO points.
 The only exception is Higher Level Maths

 In Higher Level Maths a H6 or higher will mean that 25 points
are added to the points for the grade achieved. E.G. H4 in
  Higher Maths = 60 + 25 = 85 points
 All 3rd level colleges give the subject requirements necessary
for entry to their courses in their Prospectus or on their
  website.
 Check….

 Do you need a 3rd language or a Science/Lab subject?

 Do you need a specific subject for a specific course?
In addition to the Minimum Entry Requirements, additional
subjects and grades may be required to gain entry to specific
     courses.

    For Example:
 Science: One or two science subjects depending on the course or university.
Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Ag. Science (sometimes accept Maths or
     Applied Maths)
 Engineering: Honours Maths for Universities (Special Maths exam)
 Primary Teaching: H4 (Entry 2019 & 2020) in Higher Level Irish
 Veterinary Medicine /Dietetics/Pharmacy/Dentistry: Chemistry
 Medicine: HPAT + Chemistry + one science depending on location
 Art: Portfolio
 Trinity: Paramedical/science 2 Science Subjects
• In UCD a European language is not required
        for Engineering, Science or Agricultural
        Science.

    • In NCAD (National College of Art & Design)
• Art counts as the third language. It is
        regarded as a visual language.

• NB to check all subject and course requirement
with each individual college or University
 Nursing: Science subject
 Beautician: Biology
 Medical Sciences: 1/2 science subjects

 Many of these courses also have specific
    grade requirements e.g. H3 etc
 What is it?
    ◦ An add on programme where you study two modules
namely Enterprise Education and The world of Work. It
aims to prepare young people for both.
 How do I get it?
    ◦ By having the correct combination of subjects
 Why is it a good idea?
    ◦ If you do any ordinary level subjects it is very useful for
      points
    ◦ It is common level
    ◦ It is assessed completely before the LC
    ◦ 60% portfolio including items like CV, Career Investigation
      etc
Students must take:
 A minimum of 5 Leaving Certificate subjects
 A continental language or a language module
 Irish (unless exempt)
 Two subjects from the following groupings
 Construction Studies; Engineering; Design and Communication Graphics; Technology - Any Two
 Physics and Construction Studies or Engineering or Technology or Design & Communication Graphics
 Agricultural Science and Construction Studies or Engineering or Technology or Design &
    Communication Graphics
 Agricultural Science and Chemistry or Physics or Physics/Chemistry
 Home Economics; Agricultural Science; Biology - Any Two
 Home Economics and Art - Design Option or Craft Option
 Accounting; Business; Economics - Any two
 Physics and Chemistry
 Biology and Chemistry or Physics or Physics/Chemistry
 Biology and Agricultural Science
 Art - Design Option or Craft Option and Design & Communication Graphics
 Engineering or Technology or Construction Studies or Design & Communication
Graphics and Accounting or Business or Economics
 Home Economics and Accounting or Business or Economics
 Agricultural Science and Accounting or Business or Economics
 Art Design or Craftwork Option and Accounting or Business or Economics
 Music and Accounting or Business or Economics
From 2017 Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP) grades will be
aligned as follows:

                                  Revised
     LCVP LCVP
     Grade Points

     Distinction 66
     Merit 46
     Pass 28
 Approximately 10% of all CAO courses require a language other
    than Irish and English.
 Limerick colleges do not require a third language unless it is part
    of the course of study.
 On qualifax.ie you can see the implications of not doing a
    language
 Mostly arts and humanities require it. Ones that can catch you are
Medicine, PE in UCC, Shannon College of Hotel Management,
Home economics teaching, Architecture in UCD, Speech Therapy.
 NUI Colleges: UCD, MU, NUIG,UCC,RCSI,SCHM,NCAD,ST.
    ANGELAS, MILLTOWN INSTITUTE

 Moral of the story CHECK!
A Pass in a European Language is required for entry to many
courses in NUI colleges e.g. UCC, UCD, NUIM, NUIG,
RCSI,NCAD, St. Angela’s Sligo, Shannon College of Hotel
Management, Milltown Institute, Institute of Public
Administration
◦ – the main exceptions are
 (a) NCAD which will accept Art instead of a language
 (b) Some Science, Nursing and Engineering courses

◦ UL, Trinity, DCU, DIT and all Institutes of
Technology either English and Maths OR English,
Maths and ANOTHER language which can be Irish
 Irish Exemptions carry through if OFFICIAL exemptions
 Gardaí, Army cadetships, Primary Teaching
    exemptions do not apply
 If you are applying for anything in the Engineering, Medical,
    Paramedical (Radiography, Physiotherapy, Human Nutrition/
Dietician, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory, Podiatry, Veterinary
Nursing etc.) or Science areas at Universities you need to have
a pass in at least one Laboratory Science Subject.
 Course requirements should be checked on an individual
    basis.
 A science subject is also necessary for Nursing.
 Chemistry is required  Biology is required for:
     for:  Home Economics with

       Pharmacy (CK703) and
Medicine (CK701) in UCC NUI Maynooth
(plus either Physics or  Useful for P.E. teaching
       Biology) with Biology (DC205) in
