Message from Mayor McCourt
Welcome to the Town of Cornwall 2018 Parks & Recreation Guide!
This guide provides essential information on programs and activities for the entire family
to enjoy over the summer months.
Our Town has so much to offer our residents and visitors. We have a fantastic line up of exciting
community events including; Celebrating Cornwall – “Our Canadian Heritage” and our Neighborhood
Park Parties. These events are a great opportunity to get out and meet your neighbors and enjoy our
wonderful parks. Are you looking for something to keep yourself and your children active this summer?
The Town has a wide variety of programs and activities ranging from summer camps, tennis lessons, swimming programs, beach
volleyball or pickleball, I’m sure there is something for all to enjoy!
In closing, the Town has several beautiful facilities and trails. Make it a priority for you and your family to visit
the Terry Fox Complex, neighborhood park or jump on your bikes and go cycling on one of our 12kms of trail
located throughout the Town. The community offers many wonderful opportunities for you and your family to
get out and get active.
Wishing you all a wonderful and safe summer!

A pool is a great way to cool off in the summer, and those with a pool in their yard enjoy the convenience of a quick dip whenever they feel the urge. While a pool can be a lot of fun, having one at your home also carries risks. A pool can be inflatable, hard sided, in ground, above ground, temporary or permanent but they all have risks. A pool requires a permit from the Town along with numerous other considerations, including proper insurance coverage to protect the property owner. Your home insurance provider may also have certain safety requirements for any pool they agree to cover. If you have a pool or are considering adding a pool to your property, take the time to understand your responsibilities and the possible implications first. The most obvious risk associated with owning a pool is that someone could drown. It is vital that you have security measures in place to prevent neighborhood children from accessing the pool unmonitored and always make certain that adults are present when children are playing in or around the pool area. In the event of an accident involving your pool, it is possible that you could be found at fault. If negligence on your part leads to an injury or fatality, you could be facing a lawsuit. Do your part to protect yourself. Before you buy your pool, get your permit. PUBLIC WORKS Speeding on Town Roads Speeding continues to be an issue on residential streets. As the temperatures warm up, the Town is reminding drivers to please slow down and watch for children, pedestrians and cyclists. Please share the road. Staff will be installing speed humps throughout the Town on high traffic residential streets and the speed humps will remain in place until October. Household Furniture Pickup Please be reminded the Island Waste Management Corporation (IWMC) does not collect large furniture as part of curbside pickup. Contact IWMC for drop off locations and hours for such items as household furniture, mattresses and appliances (www.iwmc.pe.ca or 1-888-280-8111). Thank-you for your help in keeping Cornwall clean UTILITY Hydrant Flushing The Utility will be conducting spring hydrant flushing from May 7 to June 1. During this time, you may experience a decrease in water pressure or discolouration of water from your taps. If you have any concerns, please contact the maintenance department at 902-566-3234. Non-Flushable Products The Utility would like to remind its customers that items such as baby wipes, personal hygiene items and cleaning wipes are not to be flushed down the toilet. Flushing these items down the toilet causes problems for our wastewater system and our environment. Please do not use the toilet as a garbage can.
The Town of Cornwall is a HIGH FIVE® Certified Organization
The Town is happy to be a community partner in HIGH FIVE® Canada’s quality standard for children's recreation
and sport. Before HIGH FIVE, no standard existed and there was a clear need for an innovative approach to help
organizations enhance program quality and provide positive experiences for children, which would remain with
them for a lifetime.
Today, HIGH FIVE holds true to the five Principles of healthy child development that the research indicates
are essential for quality programs:
• A Caring Adult,
• The opportunity to make Friends,
• The opportunity to Play,
• The opportunity to Master Skills
• The opportunity to Participate
Do you have Feedback on our Recreation Programs?
The Town of Cornwall is always looking for ways to increase the quality of programs. If you have feedback

benefits that sport offers. Organized sport teaches children important life skills, such as leadership, commitment,
teamwork and self-confidence. Staying physically active is important for everyone, and playing sports helps develop
healthy lifestyles for children across Prince Edward Island. KidSport PEI helps remove the financial barriers that
limit some children from participating in sport in PEI.

DATES: July 13th, July 27th, Aug 10th , Aug 24th Time: Dusk
Location:TOWN OF CORNWALL SWIMMING LESSONS The Parent & Tot Program structures water interaction between parent and child to stress the importance of play in developing water-positive attitudes and skills. Activities and progressions are based on child development, so parents register in the level appropriate for their child's age. Lifesaving Society Water Smart tips complement skills learning. Recommended for children aged 4 months to 3 years old. PARENT & TOT 1 Splish, splash, laugh - water can be so much fun! Babies just love to play in water. Parents with 4-12- month-old babies will explore the water together under the watchful eyes of their instructor. They'll learn how to safely enter and exit the water together. Parents will learn how to safely support their child while they discover water! PARENT & TOT 2 Water play - get set, get wet! Instructor lead sessions help parents with 12-24-month-old children safely explore water together. Parents are taught how to support their child while floating and kicking. They can celebrate together while children can get their face wet and blow bubbles for the first time. PARENT & TOT 3 Just watch them grow! At 2-3 years, these almost independent toddlers are ready to explore: Getting in, getting out, going under, and floating, under the watchful eye of their parents and instructor. The Preschool Program gives children a head start on learning to swim. Preschool Programs develop an appreciation and healthy respect for the water before these kids get in too deep. In our preschool progressions, we work to ensure 3 to 5 yrs become comfortable in the water and have fun developing a foundation of water skills. We incorporate Lifesaving Society Water Smart® education in all Preschool levels. PRESCHOOL 1 These preschoolers learn to get in and out of the water safely. They'll learn to move safely in shallow water and use a lifejacket to be comfortable with their floats and glides. PRESCHOOL 2 These youngsters will explore the water learning to submerge and exhale underwater. Buoyant aids are used to help them discover rollovers, glides, and flutter kick’s. PRESCHOOL 3 These preschoolers will master their floats, glides, and short swims on their front and back (2-3 m). They'll be able to pick up objects from the waist deep water and use their lifejackets to jump and roll into the deep end. PRESCHOOL 4 These capable preschoolers will strengthen their flutter kicks and try swimming front crawl. They'll start to learn how to support themselves in deep water and in the end, they'll do solo jumps and side rolls into deep water. Their lifejacket will support them while they learn to tread water and swim to safety (5-10 m) in the deep end.
TOWN OF CORNWALL SWIMMING LESSONS PRESCHOOL 5 These skilled and independent youngsters will master short swims doing front crawl (5-10 m) and back crawl (3-5 m). They are ready to take on a forward roll into deep water with their lifejacket on and to tread water without the extra support. Here they will get their first chance to try whip kick and fitness training. The Swimmer program makes sure children learn how to swim before they get in too deep. Progressions accommodate 5 to12 year old’s including beginners and swimmers who want to build on the basics. Lots of in-water practice develops solid swimming strokes and skills. Water Smart® education is part of every level. There are 6 Swimmer levels that flow seamlessly into the Canadian Swim Patrol program to make a 9-level comprehensive program. SWIMMER 1 These beginning swimmers will work on safe entries, exits and moving through the water. When ready they'll do floats, glides and kicking on their front and back without assistance. They'll even explore jumping into deep water and treading water with their lifejackets on. SWIMMER 2 These children will be able to jump or side roll into deep water, tread water, and swim (10-15 m) using either front crawl or back crawl. They'll try ‘vertical' whip kick and begin to work on their endurance level by stepping into the world of fitness interval training. SWIMMER 3 These swimmers will dive and do forward rolls into deep water. Watch them learn handstands and front somersaults underwater. They'll work on their front crawl, back crawl and whip kick over short distances and add some interval fitness training to their practice. By the end they'll be able to meet the Swim to Survive standard: Roll into deep water, tread water (1 min.) and swim (50 m). SWIMMER 4 These swimmers will swim further with their front crawl and back crawl. They'll get introduced to breaststroke arms drills, underwater swims and front crawl sprints. Interval training will add to their fitness level. SWIMMER 5 These swimmers will try eggbeater kick, head up front crawl, and shallow dives. And just for fun try ‘tuck' jumps and underwater back somersaults. They'll easily go the distance with a strong front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke. SWIMMER 6 These swimmers will master eggbeater and scissor kicks, front crawl, breaststroke and back crawl. With the interval training and sprint racing drills they'll be ready to make the 300 m endurance workout. And just for fun they'll try stride jumps and compact jumps. Next step: on to the Canadian Swim Patrol program
The Town of Cornwall operates a seasonal outdoor pool located at 29 Cornwall Rd (Beside the Cornwall Curling Club).
