The color of the block is distributed uniformly throughout the matrix of the block by a digital mixing and color weighing system. Color consistency is achieved by controlling the raw materials of the prod
ucts, which are used in the block mix. Vendors of these raw materials are, to a great extent, national companies that understand the importance of consistency of their products. As natural materials inherently are
conceived within the earth, their texture is not perfect, and it must be understood that the finished product will reflect these natural variations. These natural aggregates are not developed exclusively for the con-
crete products industry and may be used in ready-mix concrete (limestone and cement), road construction (limestone), or even face powder (marble). Natural variations will include some color, size, and texture
changes. These variations only enhance the final appearance. Mortar joints can also affect the overall appearance as well since they make up a significant percentage of the wall surface. The most practical way to
handle color variations is to use the same common sense approach that is used in brick construction.
2. Color Matching of Existing Jobs
Valid matching of older existing jobs can be achieved within the limits of available raw materials. To achieve this, a sample of the block to be matched should be available for our representative. Care should be tak-
en to understand that most walls have had atmospheric wear, dust impregnation to the surface, or improper cleaning, all of which can drastically change the original color. The original color is generally the color
beneath the surface and is most often the color that should be matched. Removing a sample from the wall or the job site and re-splitting it is the best way to determine the original color.
• Ground Face units may be much harder to match because of special aggregates that are exposed by burnishing. The unit’s color matrix can closely be matched and, with some similar aggregates, can often
be very acceptable.
• Split Face units can have a close match achieved by our technical staff Changes may have occurred in the natural aggregates and cements since the original products were produced. Abutting these new
walls with old ones will show some differences no matter whom the manufacturer. A sample panel will show up any color or texture issues.
3. Cleaning
30
After the best installation methods have been followed, a proper chemical cleaning may be necessary to remove concrete splashes, excess mortar, mud, retarders, heavy efflorescence, embedded stains, rust, and
surface soiling. Excellent cleaning products, which will remove these blemishes, are available from our warehouse. Specifically, the most significant problem is efflorescence, which is caused by excessive water col-
lection within the wall and is most notable during winter conditions. Our architectural masonry units contain special formulated admixes to prevent initial efflorescence as well as deep-water penetration. Despite
these preventative measures, efflorescence may occur due to improper storage techniques or constructed walls that allow water penetration to collect within the cells of the wall. If the water is not permitted to
exit the concrete block quickly, then the moisture may create the efflorescence. Extreme temperature swings only complicate the problem. Winter weather is especially a frustrating time. For Split Face masonry
use only Sure Klean Custom Masonry Cleaner (no stronger than an I:6 cleaner to water ratio) and apply with a pump up sprayer not to exceed 50 psi. Strictly follow Prosoco cleaning instructions that are provided
on each container. Laboratory testing has identified that these Sure Klean products as the most effective on and compatible with these concrete block For test results contact your representative. For Ground
Face masonry, use only Sure Klean Burnished Masonry Cleaner. Cleaning methods are the same as for the Split Face block.
High-pressure washers and munatic acids must not be used; however, low pressure may be used. Pressure rinse with 400 psi at a water flow rate of4 to 8 gallons per minute
and a 40 degree fan spray tip. Reduce water pressure to avoid damage to delicate masonry.
Project FAQ's for DecraStone4. Moisture Resistance
An integral water repellent is used in all DecraStone products. The same water repellent is also recommended for use in the mortar. All mortar should be installed following its manufacturer’s recommendations,
including the proper tooling of the joints, to ensure a tight seal of the mortar against the block Raking of the joints is not recommended because the mortar bond is enhanced through the use of a concave joint-
ing tool. In most instances, a job applied masonry sealer is recommended as further insurance against water penetration through bug holes and bonding cracks in the mortar joints.
esentative. For Ground Face masonry, use only Sure Klean Burnished Masonry Cleaner. Cleaning methods are the same as for the Split Face block.
5. Surface Coating
Depending on the intentions of the designer, a surface coat may be specified for DecraStone units. For moisture resistance, our integral water repellent is generally considered adequate for this purpose. A
Surface sealer provides an inexpensive method to prevent water intrusion from inconsistencies that may occur in construction. This is highly recommended in the case of single wyth walls.
For DecraStone Ground Face units, a final field coat of sealer, applied only after proper cleaning and drying of the wall, may be utilized to achieve a gloss finish and to protect the wall’s surface further. Decra-
Stone uses a high solids water-based acrylic coating at the factory to prevent masonry staining. However, this potentially sacrificial coating may possibly be removed during the construction cleaning process.
This totally depends on the individual cleaner’s aggressiveness. The installation of a field coat will ensure that the finished surface will be enhanced for a more extended period.
6. Product Availability
It is rare that products are inventoried for a specific job since each job is individually produced. When a sales agreement is signed, the quantities for production are set for each shape, size, and color. Production
may take some time due to backlogs. Ground face block alone must have at least a week to cure before they are burnished. Decisions to change the quantities after production is begun will involve additional
costs and delays in delivery. Proper quantity estimates are imperative for a smooth running job. We generally produce the job in one continuous run to maintain quality.
7. Jobsite Handling, Storage, and Installation 31
• Proper jobsite handling and storage involves keeping the block covered and dry to prevent weathering problems during construction.
• DecraStone Ground Face products should be moved with the utmost caution (not in a wheelbarrow), as careless handling can cause chipping and scarring.
• Installed walls should be protected after each day’s work is completed to prevent water from collecting within each block or within the cavity of the wall. Straw should be placed around the foundation of
the building to prevent mud stains and should not be removed until the building is landscaped.
• Inventory should be rotated and units should be drawn from at least three (3) cubes during installation for each wall. Ths process insures the proper distribution of the block
• Walls should be brushed and/or burlap bagged down daily to maintain a cleaner wall. This will eliminate most chemical cleaning.
DecraStone units that are field-cut with a wet saw should be rinsed with clean water to remove residue from the cutting operation; they should then be allowed to air-dry prior to installation in the wall.
• Proper architectural design details should be followed in order to prevent water incursion within the building shell thusly preventing efflorescence.
