decisions to the benefit of the Swansboro area business community.
The Swansboro Area Chamber of Commerce is made up of ap-
proximately 275+ members, including large and small businesses,

the financial equation in the “Friendly City By the Sea,” the Chamber
works closely with the Swansboro Tourism Development Authority
and Onslow County Tourism to promote the area’s coastal commu-
nities.
The Swansboro Area Chamber of Commerce’s Military Affairs
Committee is also keenly aware of the tremendous impact the

insure that the business community supports these brave men and

Visiting
     the Area
Nestled along the confluent waters of the White Oak River
and the Intracoastal Waterway, the Swansboro area is a
beautiful and quaint waterfront community that offers visitors
an unhurried journey through time. Stand on these ancient
shores where Native American civilizations once thrived and
prospered. Walk along paths where patriots and pirates alike
laid down footprints. Run on the sands of one of the coun-
try’s most beautiful natural seashores and leave your own
footprints. But make way for the sea turtles! After all, they
were here first, and have been nesting on the local beaches for
     centuries.
Experience the slower pace and aristocratic southern
charm of early America while surrounded by one of the most
active and beautiful outdoor playgrounds in the Southeast.
The Swansboro area is a living part of America’s history with
quaint little boutiques, relaxing waterside cafés and interest-
ing architecture. It’s also home to a variety of outdoor fun
for kids of all ages that includes boating, fishing, kayaking,
golf, amusements, the arts, and some of the finest unspoiled
     beaches in the country.
So plan your trip to the Swansboro area today! And don’t
forget to take along this handy SACC’s 2018 Visitor’s, Reloca-
tion and Membership Guide for helpful tips along the way.
Come…enjoy some Southern Hospitality with a coastal flair.
Who knows? You may just make a little history of your own.

Where is
                                 Swansboro?
                              Swansboro is conveniently located
                          between Jacksonville, NC, and Morehead
City, NC. It’s easy to reach by car, air, or boat.
            Modern and updated highways (NC 24, NC 58, US 70, I 40)
breeze you quickly to the coast. If you are traveling by air, two
regional airports serve our community: The newly
renovated Albert J. Ellis Airport (OAJ) in Richlands,
NC, and the Coastal Carolina Regional Airport
(EWN) in New Bern, NC. These airports provide
regularly scheduled flights to and from the rest of
               the world.
If you are boating your way to the area,
remember that the White Oak River and the
Intracoastal Waterway flow right past Swansboro.
Transient boaters are always welcome from
around the world for day trips, overnight stays
and longer visits. Public docks are available, as
well as convenient area marinas, offering boating
                 supplies and provisions.

Where’s a Good Place to...
You name it…we have it! What’s your preference? Bed
and breakfast inns? Hotels or motels? Condos? Beach
houses? All are located nice and close to where the coastal
action is (many with waterfront views included)! Stay for a
night, a week, or the entire season. Of course, the danger
is…the longer you stay, the harder it is to leave!

Onslow County
Founded in 1735, Onslow County is one of the oldest and largest
coastal counties in North Carolina. Named for the Honorable Arthur
Onslow, Speaker of the British House of Commons, Onslow is a
diverse county, sporting a landscape of sandy beaches, thick forests,
beautiful rivers and historic farmlands.
Towns in Onslow County include Swansboro, North Topsail
Beach, Holly Ridge, Richlands, portions of Surf City, and Jackson-
ville. The county is also the
                                        home of the United States
                                        Marine Corps’ largest am-
                                        phibious training facility, Camp
                                        Lejeune. The county’s popula-
                                        tion (186,000+) is dispersed
                                        throughout its 762 square
mile radius, making it one of
                                        the largest counties along the
                                        North Carolina coast.
                                           Jacksonville is the county’s
                                        largest city (approximately
                                        74,000). Travel Hwy 24 East
from Jacksonville and in less than a half hour you will be in the
county’s oldest and largest coastal town...Swansboro.
Onslow County’s economy is largely driven by its military presence
and supported strongly by both the tourism and healthcare indus-
tries. Swansboro’s historic district is one of the county’s favorite
attractions, offering a variety of shops and restaurants along a
picturesque waterfront where the White Oak River joins the
Intracoastal Waterway.
   Outdoor activities abound
in Onslow County. Kayak-
ers and boaters can enjoy
exploring the White Oak
River, the New River, the
Intracoastal Waterway and
inlets along the North Caro-
lina coast. Freshwater and
saltwater fishing, boating,
hunting, hiking, and camping
are all popular in this coastal
county and cyclists have a
variety of scenic routes to
pick from throughout the county.

Swansboro
Once the site of an Algonkian Indian village, Swans-
boro officially began its maritime history in the mid
1700s, when a prominent landowner, Theophilus Weeks,
divided a portion of his coastal plantation into 48 lots
with 6 streets, and the colonial port town was born. But it
wasn’t until 1783 that the town was officially incorporated
as Swannsborough, named in honor of North Carolina
House of Commons Speaker Samuel Swann.
The spelling of the name has changed, but the quiet
town, snuggly tucked along the North Carolina coast
where the White Oak River meets the Intracoastal Water-
way, is still steeped in charm and southern hospitality.
From its quaint historic waterfront to its pristine undevel-
oped beaches, the Swansboro area offers a relaxing yet
exciting destination to explore.
Strolling through the streets of the historic downtown
waterfront, visitors can envision life as it once was for the
port community. Many historic homes and buildings are
well preserved and carry national historic designations.
Tall shrimp boats mark the horizon, bringing to mind the
town’s early heritage of ship building and commercial
fishing.

Fast forward to present day and most would agree the
pace in Swansboro hasn’t changed much at all. Relaxed,
coastal living is here! In fact, outdoor living is a way of
life. Start by taking a tranquil stroll along one of the area’s
pristine beaches. Bear Island is great for shell collecting!
Then, try a seaside adventure…or two. Take your pick from
fishing, boating, paddle boarding, surfing, kayaking, camp-
ing, hunting, hiking, and biking (just to name a few!)
Because of its convenient location and intriguing
maritime history, Swansboro is a popular destination for
transient boaters. The town currently offers three dock-
ing facilities in the historic downtown area, including
the Moore Street Dock, Main Street Dock and the newly
constructed Church Street Dock, designed to give over-
night boaters with boats measuring 26 feet or larger easy
access to the downtown area. Two local marinas (Casper’s
Marina and Dudley’s Marina) are also conveniently located
in downtown Swansboro.
Across the Intracoastal Waterway outdoor enthusiasts
will love Hammocks Beach State Park, Swansboro’s coastal
treasure. The park is home to Bear Island, an undeveloped
barrier island that can only be reached by ferry or private
boat. This largely
undisturbed set-
ting is popular
with day trippers,
boaters, kayakers,
and campers. And
it’s a great family
outing, too!

there’s always something for everyone. Some are local
favorites…some travel many miles to perform. But, all

Swansboro also hosts a wide variety of events through-

Hammocks Beach State Park

                                                Venture to Bear
                                             Island and reward
                                             yourself with vivid
memories of one of the most unspoiled beaches on the Atlantic
Coast. Accessible only by passenger ferry or private boat, there’s
just one thing at Hammocks Beach that’s crowded, the list of
things to do.
Stroll the beach with laughing gulls and sandpipers. Cast a
baited hook into endless rows of foaming breakers. Discover
tiny specimens of marine life in tidal pools and mudflats. Use
a camera or paintbrush to capture the green and gold grasses
that color the salt marshes. Spend the night among the sand
dunes, or simply bask in the sun and do nothing at all.
Primitive campsites are located near the beach and
the inlet. Fourteen family campsites accommodate six people
each. Two group campsites, available to affiliated groups
only, accommodate a total of 36 people. Light and simple is
the way to travel as campers must carry all provisions to the
campsites from the beach or ferry dock.
Water and other facilities are available on the island, except
from mid-November through mid-March when the facilities are
winterized. Fires are not permitted, and campers must remove
all trash. Camping is permitted on numbered sites only and
permits must be obtained from the park office on the mainland.
Reservations are required for group sites. Campsites are open
  year round.
Secluded and tranquil, free from intruding commercialism,
Hammocks Beach may not be for everyone, but the island is a
retreat for people who welcome the challenges of sun, sand,
  sea and sky.

Carteret County
Carteret County, established in 1722, represents 1341
square miles (including land and water) of North Carolina’s
Crystal Coast. With a population of 68,000 (and growing), the
salty breeze, quaint towns, and relaxing “beach time” atmo-
sphere attracts visitors from all over the world.
Entertainment for all ages is THE goal at the Crystal Coast.
                                   First things
                                   first…kick back…relax!
                                   Then, pick from biking,
                                   surfing, hiking, swimming,
                                   golfing, fishing, boating,
                                   water skiing, kayaking, shell
                                   collecting, shopping and
                                   dining….or just hanging
out at the beach with a
                                   good book and a smile.
                                     The North Carolina Aquar-
                                   ium at Pine Knoll Shores
is a major attraction for Carteret County. The aquarium
showcases both the area’s maritime and marine history and
has year-round exhibits and activities designed to help visi-
tors explore the wonders of Carteret County and the Crystal
Coast.
History buffs will appreciate many stops along the NC Crys-
tal Coast. Fort Macon State Park, located at the eastern end
of Bogue Banks, is home to one of North Carolina’s coastal
Civil War forts open for public exploration.
The North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort, NC, is a
must-see for those interested in historical shipwrecks along
the North Carolina coast, including the shipwreck believed to
be Blackbeard’s flagship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge.
Diving enthusiasts have been coming to North Carolina’s
Crystal Coast for years. Because of the many shipwrecks,
this area of the Atlantic is famous for some of the most ac-
claimed diving in the world.
Bird lovers will want to tour the Core Sound Waterfowl Mu-
seum at Harkers Island, where the tradition of decoy carving
by local craftsmen is alive and well. The Core Sound Gallery
is open all year round to bring this Core Sound heritage to
new generations.
Another of the Crystal Coast’s popular treasures is the
Cape Lookout National Seashore, a collection of three
undeveloped barrier islands, including South Core Banks,
the home of the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. Climb the
lighthouse…enjoy the remote beaches…observe the wild
Shackleford Banks horses…then picnic or even camp in this
seaside wilderness accessible only by ferry or boat.
Carteret County’s largest city, Morehead City, is one of only
two North Carolina state ports. In keeping with its maritime
history, Carteret County and Morehead City are home to
several marine research facilities. The North Carolina Divi-
sion of Marine Fisheries is located in Morehead City, along
with the Center for Marine Sciences & Technology, a partner-
ship between Carteret Community College and NC State
