EXCURSIONS FROM MOMBASA, Leisure Lodge Resort.
   1. Full Day City Tour, Lunch at Tamarind & Haller Park (1
      Day)
This tour takes you all the interesting places of the Mombasa. You will be driven towards
Moi International Airport to the Akamba Handicraft Centre where one can find a variety of
products direct from the craftsmen. Drive back to the island and proceed to the Hindu
temple and have a briefing on their belief as you walk around. Proceed to the huge and
famous Tusks over Moi Avenue erected in 1952 in honour of Queen Elizabeth II’s first visit
to Kenya.

Other places to visit include a drive on Mama Ngina Drive and seeing the giant baobab
forest that live for about 1000 years, Fort Jesus; the historic fortress built by the
Portuguese to ward off attacks from the Arabs and a short walk through the Old Town.
This takes you through a maze of twisting alleyways, ornately carved doors and
overhanging balconies. This ancient and impressive maze of architectural wonder will
bring you to the Old Dhow Harbour, which is still occasionally used by Dhows from Arabia
and India.

A visit to the Market is recommended for spices and other produce.
Head for Tamarind Restaurant for Lunch.
The Tamarind is well known for its excellent cuisine and particularly its seafood
specialties. With its stunning setting it is often referred to as the finest seafood restaurant
in Africa.
1500hrs depart Tamarind and drive to Haller Park past crocodile farm along the way.
Enjoy the fascinating and world famous Haller Park. From a wasteland to paradise, the
story of Haller Park is the miracle of turning a barren, lunar-type landscape into an
ecologically sustainable wonder. Over the past three decades, quarries that were
previously excavated by Bamburi Cement for cement production; have now been
transformed into a variety of recreational facilities including forests / nature trails and
game sanctuaries, and crocodile and fish farms. Here a land once lifeless, now thrives
with abundant wildlife and is home to, amongst other animals, hippo antelope, birds,
reptiles, snakes, giant tortoises, crocodiles and giraffe.
As dusk approaches, board you van and drive back to your hotel.

   3. 01 Day Shimba Hills Tour

Shimba Hills National Reserve is known for its forested landscape, sharp slopes and steep
valleys. It is not ideal for animal safaris because the African wildlife is difficult to spot in
the dense vegetation. The animals hide in the shade of the forest in order to keep cool
until the early evening. However, you may see the rare sable antelope and many birds on
your visit. Best views are from the eastern side of the park, near Giriama Point, as the
animals move towards the rivers to drink.
One of the main attractions to the Shimba Hills is the impressive Sheldrick Falls, which
cascade 25m (82 feet) over the escarpment. There is a scenic 2km (1 mile) footpath that
takes up to an hour to walk each way. Take a hat, sunscreen and water to drink and keep
a sharp lookout for elephants. A ranger will accompany hikers without charge from 10-
3pm daily. Sheldrick Falls is an idyllic spot for a cool swim and a picnic.
The park has the last breeding herd of beautiful sable antelope in Kenya. They are among
Kenya's largest antelope, with black coats and long, scimitar-shaped horns, which they
were hunted for. They may be seen grazing early or late in the day around Buffalo Ridge.
There are more than 600 elephants in the park and a fenced elephant corridor links the
park with the elephant sanctuary at Mwaluganje Forest. In addition to elephants, there
are also buffalo, waterbucks, hyenas, warthogs, leopards, baboons and monkeys. Maasai
giraffes and ostriches have also been reintroduced to the park.
There are many birds, including 111 different recorded species. There are even more birds
to be seen during the spring migration. Bird shooting is only permitted outside the reserve

   4. 01 Day Tsavo East National Park.
Tsavo East National Park covers an area of about 12,000 square km, 40% of Kenya's parks'
total area. This vast park lies in low semi arid country at the eastern edge of the inland
plateau, north of the main Mombasa-Nairobi road and railway. Much of the park is level,
open country with scattered rocky ridges and outcrops. Due to its size, the park is one of
the world's wildlife and biodiversity strongholds.

The Yatta plateau, a long, flat topped lava ridge, runs along the western boundary of the
park. Beneath it flows the Athi river which joins the Tsavo river, just above the Lugard
falls, to become the Galana river, a permanent river that cuts right across the park. The

                                               3
seasonal Tiva and Voi rivers are important features of the Northern and Southern sectors
respectively.

There are scattered seasonal pools, swamps and dams, but relatively few sources of
permanent water. One of the great spectacles of the park is the Mudanda rock between
Voi and Manyani. This 1 1/2 km long outcrop is a water catchment area which supplies a
natural dam at its base. In the dry season, hundreds of elephants come to drink and bathe
here.
